  • The railbirds began chanting ''Woody! Woody! Woody!'' in midstretch, as Danzig Connection pulled away to win the 118th Belmont Stakes yesterday and provide his trainer, Woody Stephens, with his fifth straight and most improbable winner of the final leg of the Triple Crown. Stephens said before and after the race that Danzig Connection was less talented than his four previous winners, but the colt was good enough to splash to a 1 1/4-length victory over Johns Treasure and Ferdinand as an 8-to-1 outsider. Personal Flag was fourth, Mogambo faded to sixth after leading for nearly a mile, and Rampage finished a distant seventh as the 5-2 favorite over a very sloppy track. ''Woody, you are unbelievable, I mean just unbelievable,'' Chris McCarron called out to the trainer en route to the winner's circle. McCarron, who had never ridden for Stephens before, rode Danzig Connection through the mile and a half in the mediocre time of 2:29 4/5, the slowest Belmont since Temperence Hill posted that clocking in 1980.

I want to express my appreciation for your uploading these videos. I had all of the VHS recordings of the Triple Crown from 1983 until around 2009, but I moved and had to throw my VHS tapes away. I regret doing it.

Ferdinand, without rain, would have been unstoppable.

Chelsey said that the track is fast; couldn’t Ferdinand run an excellent race on a wet but fast track?
Does Ferdinand always need a dry fast track to be‘unstoppable’?

    Race @ 10:12

  • @raygordonteacheschess5501

This horse had very weak speed figures in 1986 leading up to this, but the 1985 Young America obviously qualified him.

My grandfather introduced me to horse racing 🐎 from an early age. Since then I always bet on Woody, regardless. Now unfortunately he is no longer with us, so I always have to place a bet on Lukas. Watch out for Ignitus.
