- Only his father ran a faster Belmont Stakes than Risen Star did yesterday, and only three racing legends have won the race more easily.
Risen Star, Secretariat's best son, blew past Winning Colors after a mile and drew off to a tremendous 14 3/4-length victory in the 120th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. Kingpost was second with Brian's Time third as Winning Colors, the popular filly who won the Kentucky Derby May 7, tired badly to finish last in a field of six.
Risen Star's time of 2:26 2/5 under Eddie Delahoussaye was the second-fastest Belmont ever, surpassed only by Secretariat's world-record dirt time of 2:24 in 1973, widely considered the greatest performance in modern racing history. Risen Star's winning margin was smaller only than Secretariat's (31 lengths), Count Fleet's (25 lengths in 1943) and Man o' War's (20 lengths in 1920).
Risen Star, who paid $6.20 for $2 to win as the favorite, earned not only the Belmont winner's purse of $303,720 but also the $1 million Triple Crown bonus for compiling the best record in the three classic races. He finished third to Winning Colors and Forty Niner in the Kentucky Derby, then won the Preakness at Pimlico May 21.

risen star did his father proud the great Secretariat rest in peace both of you
Risen Star is buried next to the mighty Sham! Love all 3 ❤
What a beauty! He so reminds me of Secretariat his dad and Bold Ruler his Grandfather! He runs like the wind! It was refreshing to see that he was hand ridden just like Ron Turcotte rode Secretariat to Triple Crown Victory in 1973! Perhaps Secretariat never duplicated himself, but he sure came close with Risen Star!
"He looks like his daddy at this point" gets me every time
I had bet Winning Colors, ignoring a very generous 5-1 on Risen Star. Loved watching him pay hoage to his sire with that performance, second-fastest only to Secretariat.
The late, great 'Risen Star, from New Orleans, LA., Looks just like his daddy, the great 'Secretariat who won the Belmont, 1973 by 31 lengths, while 'Risen Star won his Belmont by 14 3/4 lengths in 1988. Rest in Peace, Risen Star. Mr. Granville S. Wright, Horse Admirer.
As a fanatical fan of Big Red I’m with you. That comment brings tears to my eyes every time!
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 2/1 before the race...
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 There was no way in hell Winning Colors was getting 12 furlongs against these.
Eddie D. What a southern gentleman, and my all time favorite! What a rider, great hands! 👍❤️🙏👉🇺🇸
Winning colors was such a great filly
"Second only to the great Secretariat" awesome.
@bruce robbins No Horse could ever have beaten Secretariat at the Derby / Preakness / Belmont ...It's that simple, he was the greatest 3 year old ever or ever will be !! Secretariat was a freak of nature !!
@bruce robbins Wishful thinking my friend with a lot of Blabbing to boot ! You'll never see a 3 YEAR OLD break all 3 records of the Triple Crown set by Secretariat ...You got a better chance of winning the Lottery Pal ! It was indeed a great accomplishment regardless of what you think or are praying for ! Why people try to deny great equine feats are beyond my comprehension ? Keep on hating Big Red pal, it don't make any difference to me !! He's a Legend that will live forever !!
@bruce robbins Just Ranting Negative Shit on a video of Secretariat's Son winning the Belmont !! Amazing Class you have !! Go away snowflake !!
@@MrLew1965 The greatest domination in sports history..the late great Secretariat. His records still stand to this day and that speaks for itself. That's what? 49 yrs? Wow!
A true-life Hollywood Ending! Wow 🎉
"He's doing it just like his daddy!"
Cashed a big ticket on this one.
'''''AFTERTIMING ALERT""
he was certainly underrated
His dad was something else.
RISEN STAR ran the last half mile in the same time of his father SECRETARIAT (50"), and RS was less asked (though SECRETARIAT's early fractions were crazy).
Secretariat wasnt ridden out in that Belmont either, dont kid yourself. If he had, he might have taken another second off the Belmont Stakes record that he still owns.
just like his father the great Secretariat what a great horse
Risen Star was determined to make his daddy extra proud in this race - but not steal his glory. Well played, Risen Star, well played ❤
A legendary performance!!
This was a GREAT Horse...Underrated...Really wish we Could have seen him Race more After This Race
Just like his daddy!! Loved Secretariat!! His son did great!
Just like his daddy!!!!
Risen Star keeps the flag flying !!Congratulations🌹glad the sisters will get a handsome donation too 🌹🌹✌️
First time to see this. Ran like his daddy!
“Delahoussaye asks the son of Secretariat for speed, and gets it!”
*goosebumps*
Fans of Secretariat waited forever for a son who would do him some justice, and here they had one. Lasix did not help the line as it was sound. Mr. Prospector would some come to dominate the elite ranks as a sire, with Secretariat as a very strong broodmare sire.
Yeah.
Secretariat would have never directly re-created himself because the X-Factor does not go from Sire to Son.
It goes to Sire to Daughter to Son (i believe)
Through Terlingua (Storm Cat), and Secrettame (Gone West, who gave us Elusive Quality, who gave us Smarty Jones and Quality Road), the latter of whom won her first two or three races by poles before levelling off.
Risen Star was a great horse , if Louie Roussel would have trained the horse for more speed. He would have won the triple crown. This horse is top three all time does not get credit he deserves. I was at the Fairgrounds when this horse was running Shane Romero had the mount then Eddie Delahooussaye took over he said out of his mouth in the Kentucky Derby he did not know this horse had tactical speed he rode him differently after the Derby just go back and look at the race with Forty Niner he ran him down with no pace in the race from dead last
Amen 10 times over
I disagree. He trained the horse beautifully. Horses arent machines, sometimes THEY dictate their own running style, and theres nothing you can do as a trainer to change that.
Winning Colors just got away during the Derby, and ran a big one that day, and Risen Star wasnt at his best.
It happens, and winning the triple crown is almost impossible to do. Louie did a great job with that horse.
@Lars Svensen That was educational; thanks for posting 😊
@@chocolatetownforever7537 Agree. Also, less horses in the Derby and Risen Star is a Triple Crown Winner!
LOL. Not top 3 all time. Not with 11/ 8-2-1..
I am a retired exercise rider and Risen star jockey Eddie Delahoussaye won by 15 lengths and Risen Star is the Son of Secretariat great jockey Eddie Delahoussaye is retired and trains now.
Eddie Delohousaye is My favorite Jockey of all time and a class act
Great jockey.

i grew up with horses and did it all i am 59yrs old and was the best ex rider and the owners and trainers used me to breeze and work hard on the wood and eddy delohouse is on of my favorite jockeys. i went to gulfstream park in 1984 and went to davy Florida denise borough had a farm and she wanted me to work some of her horses out .Barry shulman.
that was a 2:25.0 performance he ran wide all the way, Secretariat jr
Brilliant.
Thank you for posting this--I feel so happy when I watch it and Risen Star's Preakness. Too bad about Winning Colors though.
For me ,The triple crown horse winner that never ran the Kentucky.
**he ran a troubled 3rd in the Kentucky Derby...
@@chrispafrieddreams9118 He had such a great surge near the end of the Derby. If only…
Fillies carry five fewer pounds to level the playing field, to give them a fair chance against the naturally-stronger colts. It really ticks me off when they're said to have an "advantage" because of it! If this were really the case, there'd be considerably more fillies racing against the boys, and winning. Yes, there are beasts like Zenyatta, but I don't necessarily believe that size equates directly to strength.
Don’t forget Genuine Risk. She won to the Derby and finished second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont. I believe the only fill to do that.
my name is Barry shulman and grew up in Lynnfield ma and graduate of Lynnfield high school graduate of Lynnfield high 1975.I grew up with horses and was a professional exercise rider and did it all .When i was young i went into horse shows jumping fences and then I went to Suffolk Downs and was the best exercise rider and i went to gulstream park in 1984 I'm small and a trainer said i have a build like Eddy Acaro. i also went to frank smith's training center a mile down the road lucian Laurens training center was thier. I watched that race when i was at suffoulk Downs Barry shulman.
Great race
If you watch the Kentucky derby.. risen star got boxed in and couldn't accelerate ..was the jockeys fault.
He should have won the triple Crown.
Debbie, The Derby was also Eddie's first time on Risen Star, due to the jockey change just before the Derby, he didn't do the best job on RS and admitted it after, RS just caught a bad trip. A shame.
I didn't know that David Schwimmer owned Risen Star.
Risen Star had LOTS of great horses in him on both sides. Besides Sec, he had Princequillo, out of Sec's dam, Somethingroyal, Ribot, one of the great horses of the last century, Nasrullah, Nearco, one of the great horses of the past century, Miss Disco, the great distance horse Discovery, and more. How could he lose?
this was 30 yrs ago...wow..i dont remember...where's this nun? wow! and he was the son of God's horse! go figure..
I thought Risen Star was the best horse since Affirmed.
Risen Star was the greatest horse in 45 years,,only his Daddy was better......
not wrong. i think of the Bid as well
Tyere was the Bid spectacular bid was gud too
Ehh..Great horse, but I dont think Risen Star was the best since Affirmed, sorry.
Although a great horse Affirmed was beaten soundly twice by Seattle Slew 1977 triple crown winner.
Good, Good horse, the only thing is that his actual heart size was not as big as his Dad's.
thanks partymanners !
In my opinion Risen Star was never recognized for his ability. Unfortunately people focus on just the horses who win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and if they don’t win the Belmont Stakes they’re disappointed. In this case I think we forgot about Risen Star’s accomplishments that year because he didn’t win the Kentucky Derby or sweep The Triple Crown.
True. I’m glad that he’s remembered at least once a year, when the Risen Star Stakes is run 🌟
THANKS TO MR LOUIE ROUSSEL & MR RONNIE LAMARQUE FOR RISEN STAR NEW ORLEANS SUPER HORSE DENNY R
Eddie, good looking guy. He did die young.
Eddie D don't hurt
How did this horse not win the Triple crown?
dsfddsgh He had a lot of traffic problems in the Derby....A frequent issue in this race with so many starters.......Otherwise, perhaps
Third in the Derby.
Bad start with all the horse blocking.
Bad instruction from the trainer. He told Eddie to keep him back. Had he told him to place him forward, it would have been history.
Injury
😰
The day before the Belmont, Risen Star had a 3f warmup in :33 and change., Roussell said he wanted :35, but the exercise rider couldn't hold him back. There was no way he was losing this race. Still the third fastest Belmont ever behind big red monsters Secretariat and Easy Goer. That's some pretty prestigious company.
That was a classic call "he looks like his daddy today" when he was way out front. And if you watch close he didn't touch the horse at all the whole race
can't understand why he wasn't favorite! people have forgotten whose son he is!
Especially after winning the Preakness!
I completely agree Patty!
I was there that day I'm only five foot two the horses come around the last turn about to come down the stretch I'm at the poll everybody is lined up against the fence standing on the benches coolers cheers anything so they can see I couldn't see the race to save my life I was ten feet from the fence the crowd was roaring resin star coming down the stretch langhts ahead and I can't see anything.. I attended one of the greatest horse races in history and I couldn't see it
I went to the 91 Breeders Cup at Churchill. Besides being the coldest high temp in Breeders cup history, I sat at track level and couldn't see s**t! The only race I saw good was the juvenile, BC I bet $100 on Bertrando, I went and watched it on TV..

I guess the moral of your & proudamerican8666’s stories is: go for the nosebleed seats 😆
But seriously, I’m sorry about your bummer experiences. I’d be furious!
Wow one camera man in 1973 did a better job than the 4 clowns combined who filmed this thing.
Early splits set him up beautifully. The filly ran herself out.
How did this horse lose the derby.
Sister, what was you doing at the race track? I know you were betting....you belong in church praying.
