Angel's Landing is a challenging and iconic hike located in Zion National Park, Utah. The trail, which is 5.4 miles roundtrip, is known for its breathtaking views and steep drop-offs. The hike starts at the Grotto trailhead and follows the West Rim Trail to Scout Lookout, where the final ascent to the summit of Angel's Landing begins.
The trail is strenuous, with a 1,500-foot elevation gain, but the views along the way are worth it. Hikers will pass through a narrow canyon called Refrigerator Canyon, where the cool air provides a refreshing break from the heat. As the trail continues, hikers will reach Walter's Wiggles, a series of 21 steep switchbacks that lead to Scout Lookout.
From Scout Lookout, hikers will begin the final ascent to the summit of Angel's Landing, which involves holding onto chains that are bolted into the rock face. The trail is narrow and exposed, with sheer drop-offs on either side, so hikers should exercise caution and avoid the hike if they have a fear of heights.
Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Zion National Park and the surrounding landscape. The hike is considered one of the most thrilling and memorable in the park, but it's not for the faint of heart. Those who are up for the challenge will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience.

Thank you for sharing this! Great video. I've hiked Angel's Landing twice - once in the mid 1990s in my late 20s with some guys from church, and then again with my younger son, brother-in-law, and nephews in October, 2018. I was 53 then.
In 2018 we all reached Scouts Lookout (?) where the chains begin and I was so tired I told them to go on without me. I was a bit out of shape at the time and I was worried I'd take a wrong step or something. I sat there for about 40 minutes catching my breath and psyching myself up, and then got up and hiked the chains part to the top by myself. It was extremely scary as I have a thing about heights as well. It was also really exhilarating to do it, though, and I felt the confidence growing in me the farther I went. As I reached the last ledge at the top and peeked my head up above the rock, my family was right there getting ready to descend and I caught my nephew's eyes and he yelled, "Hey, look! It's Uncle Pat!" They all turned and saw me, and the smile that came across my son Colin's face will be with me for the rest of my life. We took some great pics of our group up there and they let me rest for about 30 minutes before we began the hike back down. I'm glad I did it and have the photos with my son to prove it. It's one of my all time favorite memories. Thanks gain, and God bless you. 🙂😎
I did the angels landing hike a couple weeks ago and I can say I was more scared watching this video than I was on the actual hike. I think reality of how dangerous it can be finally hit me watching this 🤣
Great narration! This is the best angels landing video I've watched! Congratulations on conquering your fears!
I sat at the permit check point at Scout Lookout resting, ( walking up to Scout Lookout is not easy), watching people check in, and descend the final steps. I was trying to decide if I’m going to apply for a permit. I’m not fearful of heights- I’m fearful of falling. The trail looks crazy.
@@rayray4192Half the danger comes from unprepared people with poor footwear.
@@IdRatherBeHiking danger to themselves only?
@@IdRatherBeHiking I stopped in Las Vegas and went to REI and bought the best they had in a medium weight hiking boot. They fit like a glove. I hiked to Scout’s landing, took a break, and then went up west Rim trail for 1.5 hours and then turned around. It was enjoyable in itself. Happy trails and good mental health to you.
How did you overcome the fear of heights?
I started hiking when I went though my divorce in 2016-2018 and it’s been life changing. Great healing. Thanks for the video!
I'd glad, hope you are doing well.
Props to you. My palms are sweaty just watching. Well done. Great editing too.
thanks dude
Wow, I'm so impressed. I'm afraid of heights and I know I'll never do this hike, and I know I'm missing out on something very special. I'm so happy for you, to have overcome your fears enough to pull this off. Well done!!!!!!!
Wow all that trust put in that chain! Imagine being the folks that pounded the chains in the rock
Amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I also am scared of heights and I did the hike for my birthday a couple of years ago in December. There was thin ice on the shaded part of the rocks. Many people stopped at the scout point (i believe it's called) and everyone kept saying it was too sketchy. Until one guy cmae down looking like a swan of how elegantly and seamless he made it looked. He said it was breathtaking and all we needed was that one yes from a sea of NOs! It was truly beyond exhilarating.
Watching your video reminded me of that feeling and how dangerous it truly was. My heart raced but the memory of such a great accomplishment also rushed in. Thanks again!!
You are a great storyteller and cinematographer/ editor. One of the best personal documentaries on CZcams. You have a gift. Keep it up!
I recently visited Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon with my brothers. I have wanted to get to Zion for years but I never got around to it. I have stage four colorectal cancer so time is short and valuable for me. My bro's put the trip together and away we went. To actually see Zion in person was amazing. Especially to share it with my brothers. Iwill always cherish this trip and forever thank my brothers for making my dream come true .
Hell no never for me. Then you descend. I had huge anxiety watching you. That’s a HUGE no for me. You are a mad man! Amazing hike sir!
This is the best Angels landing video I have watched. It really brings out how dangerous the hike is without someone trying to act like a macho guy or hero because they did it. My brother and I hiked to Scouts landing in 2019 and that was enough for us. Beyond that it isn't really a trail or a hike, it is rock climbing and too many that do it have little or no experience at that.
The descent down looks absolutely horrifying. If I went up there, they would have to send up a rescue team. LOL
Get to da choppa! Ya its spooky going down for sure
Thank you for showing the hike down as well. So often people don’t. To me it definitely would be scarier.
ya pretty scary going down
Dude my hat is off to you! I could barely watch the video and I'm not afraid of heights. That was some accomplishment that you did, I know you're very proud of yourself and rightly so x1000.
I'm trying to overcome my fear of heights by watching this video, but its just giving me heartburn, a racing pulse, and shortness of breath.
This video makes it seem WAY worse than it is by narrowing the field of vision. I've done this hike and there's zero danger of accidentally falling off, unless you just decide to run like 10 feet to your right/left and jump off.
Try smaller climb like up ladder then local small uphill hike and on and on. Small steps to build your confidence and then you’ll realize it’s just your mind and you can overcome it
@@oxygeninduced this isn't true at all, plenty of spots to fall off. There is a spot where its only 1 foot wide.
@@IdRatherBeHiking If you're going to say "this is not true" don't follow it up with a "1 foot wide" lie. Very obviously if there was a spot where it's 1 foot wide and you would fall to your death, the hike wouldn't be as popular as it is, or legal. Many people would die.
After watching your video, there is no doubt I could never do Angels Landing. Your video is incredible.
Right? Lol
Beautifully shot video. Thank you for allowing me on your journey to a place that I won't ever get to see in my lifetime. I am in my 70's and not fit enough for such a climb. I have lived on Vancouver Island and have enjoyed many beautiful hikes while living there.
Its one of a kind on vancouver island.
I'm terrified of heights! I've been to Zion, and I knew there was no way I would hike Angel's Landing! I get dizzy just watching your footage 😮
Ya its something else, the hike up to Scouts Lookout is awesome, also scary but more doable then Angels Landing.
beautiful but i just cannot. i dont specifically have a fear of heights, i have a fear of EDGES. this is literally that fear manifested tangibly. i'm glad you're channeling what you went through into confidence building activities.
I have never been more proud of a stranger. Congratulations 🎉
That's awesome thanks!
@@IdRatherBeHikingI echo chef boy with a sentiment of being proud to know you virtually. I’m camped on B.L.M. land at Gooseberry Mesa. Yesterday was first day ever in Zion. I hiked up to Scout Lookout and then did 1 hour on the west rim trail. Today I may apply for a lottery ticket. 6 hours of hiking was exhausting. May do Emerald pools today. Angel’s Landing seems terrifying to me. At 45 minutes you say this path is narrow with high exposure and no chain. Then a little later you say you are at the narrow place and there were chains on both sides. It looks dangerous. Am I missing something here? Camera angle, scary sound track, your fear of falling, or is it really a fear of fallin, or both?
@@rayray4192its hundreds of feet vertical drop to the bottom, thats basically the jist of it. Some people think its ok to hike up in crocs with their 10 year old kids and say it is safe, most logical people think there is an real risk of dying if you trip. Its up to you to decide if that induces fear or not.
@@IdRatherBeHiking the hike scares me. I did not try for a permit. A good life is not determined by hiking Angel’s Landing. Going home Watchman at first light. Staying at Watchman campground. Zion is a wonderland. Big rock slide today at Weeping Rock. Buses stopped running. When they started back traumatized people hit in who witnessed the slide. Lots of dust in the air. I thought it was a jet airliner. No, it was a rock slide.
I'm very glad you did this video for the one that can't handle it, thank you very much.
I like your video. It’s so real. Glad you also filmed the descending part. That was even harder for the people who is afraid of the height. Very nice job and congrats to you for the achievement!
ya most people who film this dont have a fear of heights so they don't understand what someone with that fear would react to. Most other videos don't have footage of the descent.
Kudos to the team installing the chains
One of the clearest step by step videos.
I first hiked this in the early 90’s, but regular film and camcorders didn’t do it justice.
Nice job! Way to face your fears head on! I live about an hour away from ZNP. In my 20s/30s (I’m a bit older now) I probably hiked that trail at least 2 dozen times and never got tired of it. Such great memories! I still remember feeling scared of that narrow spot you mentioned 😅 the first time or two. Hiking it with a myriad of first timers, I can tell you with confidence that’s the spot most people freeze up at! So, you’re definitely not alone.
I keep finding these videos to watch lately. It’s been about 20 years since I’ve hiked up there. I think it’s telling me I need to try and get a permit and go do it! 😂
Thanks for the video!
Possibly the best hiking video ive seen on YT, and ive watched tonnes.
What an extraordinary place.
Hopefully i get there one day, before i get too old !
Thanks friend, that made me smile. I've got more videos, about 180 of them haha. Ya it is such a magical place, unlike anything else.
Those hikes with their very precarious holds, can be twice the danger due to the hikers around you; if someone slips and grabs you, down you both go! Or slips and knocks you off your perch, same thing. My physician father diagnosed acrophobia in me at age 4, he loved to hike and get to the top and look out at the grand view. He made me come to him and I did so on all fours, bawling because I was scared. When I got to him, he made me stand up and I climbed up his pantleg and hung on for dear life!
Years later, I learned to fly to help with that fear. You must look down a lot when flying and I got used to that with no problem. I've been up to the observation decks/+towers, and as long as there is something to hang onto, I'm okay. From the top of the Empire State Building in NY to my neighbor when I worked in San Francisco, the top of the TransAmerica building -- they were all interesting, but not really scary to me, but a narrow trail on a high mountain IS, chains or not, I love life too much to risk losing it!
Well documented video with great narration! Kudos to you for conquering your fears and bagging this iconic hike! I did this one in 2019 and it still resonates in me as such a cool 😎 experience. Keep growing, young fella!
Cheers!
Beautiful earth that God created! Congratulations on completing this hike that you wanted to while sharing your adventure with everyone. :)
Great video! I‘m afraid of heights too, I would never ever done this! You have my honest respect! Greetings from Germany!
Good for you for facing your challenges! I made it past the first chains, then turned into a flesh puddle. Way to go. Enjoy what you’ve experienced & learned 🌲🦁
Thanks for sharing that beautiful and challenging hike 👍🏻
Wow! Just amazing. And better you than me. Thank you for sharing this most incredible hike.
This is the best Angels landing video I have seen. It is also the scariest one I have seen.
Cheers, to be fair there aren't any other filmmakers making videos of angel's landing just people with go pros. Some action camera footage + bubble gum pop doesn't exactly match the tone of the situation haha.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and journey. Congratulations to your bravery and facing your fears. So encouraging and a great testimony. I am also privileged and appreciate your sharing of reaching the top of Angels Landings. So beautiful and breathtaking ❤
Congratulations and kuddos to you! Best visual of the Angels Landing I have seen. Enjoy your hiking journey and never give up!
Absolutely wonderful! Thank you for sharing your adventures!
This is beyond amazing, what a production my friend! Shots are amazing!
What an amazing video! Thank you for sharing, stunning and heavenly place! 😁
Love your content David❤️ Amazing that you can challenge yourself like this! Great documentary!
Such an awesome video! You had me cheering when you made the summit.
Never have I ever had more random conversations with strangers about how fear than on this hike XD. A couple of my friends decided to stay at the lookout, and I felt for them as I thought the view at the end was truly special. As someone who doesn't have much of a fear of heights I actually think the exposure was a little overhyped, but that's not to say it wasn't still extreme. Congrats on doing it and overcoming your fears!
Absolutely beautiful and absolutely terrifying! Excellent filming and narration!!
Congratulations! So courageous! Had me to tears, knowing your fear of heights yet on you climbed. Great job. You are an inspiration ❤❤️
Thank you for sharing such a great hike. Zion is so beautiful, and seeing you showing some other parts is wonderful.
Looking forward to the next video and the rest of the big trip!
cheers Christopher
That bit at 8:18 noped me out
Excellent video of a difficult hike surrounded by mountain majesty❤ Great job😊
This is Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤. WOW, on most of this!!!! Good luck too you in the future.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yikes... very impressive commitment... at first thought not for me till you got to top and saw assortment of mere mortal hikers... thanks man ... wow
Hell of a job!
Thanks for this video! Its so amazing! Its also so scary.
Your video is the best. Its like we are hiking with you, but you did all the hard work! Thanks so much!
thanks that was my goal, to make a viewer feel they are with me.
Amazing! Such an incredible accomplishment!
I've been fortunate enough to do this twice. The first time, I had to sit and scoot the majority of the way down. Congrats on pushing through and conquering your fears!
You too, you aren't the first to do the butt scooch and not the last. There were some shaky elvis legs up there that day.
Congratulations! Great video
Amazing editing, you deserve more followers.
Cheers I appreciate that
Congratulations on conquering your fear of heights. Thank you David for this amazing video and best of luck on your future adventures.
Cheers Brother
OMG insane! I’m not afraid of heights but this video terrified and amazed me at the same time, congratulations on your success!
Incredible !! Well done - not something I could ever do ...
Best hiking video I've watched of Angels Landing. I liked the fact that you filmed both the ascent and descent. Congratulations on your accomplishment!
Best video of this Hike I’ve watched. Especially as someone also terribly scared of heights. I freak out even seeing people near edges and cliffs etc. This video though really gave me good insight to HOW narrow and difficult it would def be for me. I wish I was brave like you! Congratulations on conquering your fear and taking life by the horns!🎉 Thank you for sharing this 😊
I’ve watched a few videos of people climbing Angels Landing but this was the best! Thanks for posting👍 and stay safe out there☀️
cheers
Thanks for sharing your experiences. This is so inspiring, and I'm proud of you. I dream of being this free and enjoying life this way someday. Financially, I'm unable to do such things right now, but I hope to get there eventually. Keep on keeping on, brother!
That was terrifying. Congratulations and thank you for sharing a journey I will never make!
Well I was already scared looking at your video so wow so powerful that you did that.
Congratulations!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
For what it's worth, I'm proud of you. Excellent video. Thanks for sharing this. Keep on keepin on my friend. Later day's.
Superbe vidéo !!! J espère un jour faire cette magnifique ascension !!! Merci
Your filming is amazing. You really captured it.
Congratulations on working to conquer your fears!🎉
What a great video, 🙄 thanks for taking us along with you!! I too am scared of heights and seriously don't think that I could have hiked that, there's no way, no matter how much I would have tried to talk myself into it ... 😬
Thank you for sharing this! So inspiring!
Cheers gloria!
Thanks for reminding me how great this hike is. I've completed it twice and loved it.
The colors in that canyon are something else!
You were very brave, overcoming your fear! I fear heights but now I am inspirerad. Hi from Sweden and thank you for a amazing video.
Literally just watched this video this morning and I’m rewatching it again tonight and comparing all the photos and videos I took during my hike to all the great shots you captured, that hike is so vividly in my memory, for some reason it just stands out in my mind all the time, for me it was one of the coolest and craziest things I’ve done in my life, and watching your video really reminds me of that. I’m happy you took on this challenge and it makes me feel even better about myself that I did the same.
Agreed, it was really something special. I've pushed my limited mush further now since this video but it still holds a special spot as its a really crazy experience. Did you do it when you needed a permit?
Edge of my seat naibiter, this one! Awesome video, I love the perspective!
Thanks, this is the video I wished I had to watch before going. I was surprised how many sections don't have chains.
This is the best video on angles landing that I’ve seen. Seriously don’t think I’d ever do it after watching this… lol
Good job! I can't wait todo it myself.
Explore the other trail going up and away from Angels landing too, I regret not going further up there
thansk for sharing your story and video. we are climbind angels landing next week, hope it goes well : D
That turned out very well - thank you very much for the impressive video. The camera work is superbly realised and the personal thoughts underline the whole thing in a very pleasant and reflective way. Thank you!
Cheers friend
Entertaining and very informational. Some people will be happy to not take the risk and some will be encouraged to go all the way.
I've watched A LOT of videos of this hike, but yours is the best! Great footage and commentary!
Cheers, that was the goal!
Great job both climbing and filming. Thanks.
thanks!
A-mazing! Your attitude and the view both. For someone to conquer what you went through ,considering this means a lot of financial setback, is nothing short of heroic.
Congratulations on your achievement conquering Angels Landing. You got some pretty nice footage of your hike also. Good luck on your continued journey.
Cheers friend!
Nice! Thanks for sharing
The feeling you would have had after doing this climb! You are amazing!
You did an amazing job on this video. Well done!
Thanks Julie
Just wow... that is some serious exposure, with serious potential consequences.
You have an amazing ability to bring these videos together with the music, the story-telling, the crystal clear shots of the views. Right at the start the super zoomed out view of the park was amazing!
Some of the best hiking videos on CZcams, only other channels I've found that rivals this level of production is Foresty Forest, lifeofluke, Jeff Pelletier but you all have your own unique styles.
I've never seen footage of this hike before so thank you!
Thanks for that, ya I enjoy all those channels myself. Maybe one day I can do a collab with Foresty, he isn't too far from me. Add in Ervinslens, Nikolai Schirmer, his team does amazing work on his ski videos, Artic Lines, Cody Townsend (all ski touring channels). I find there are far less high quality hiking channels than ski touring ones.
thank u i feel like i already went there virtually 😊
Congrats..to you!!
This brings back amazing and terrifying memories. I think I reached the top about :30 after you and left :30 before you. Great video - really captures the essence of the climb. Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh my goodness! To say I was terrified and squirming in fear whilst watching you traverse this hike is an understatement. My stomach was in knots, doing so many somersaults and my face was reddened from constantly rubbing it due to anxiety I experienced watching you walk this terrain. I was literally leaning in my chair trying to hug the cliff face as you walked it it. I truly felt like I was there. Kudos to you, and congratulations on conquering your fear of heights. There is no way on earth - you couldn't pay me! - to do anything like this. Besides not being quite fit, I have Meniere's disease which makes it not a good option for me (balance issues).
I subbed... this is tough to just watch from the comfort of home. The testicular fortitude you have is an inspiration
Inspiring vid David, good on you! This is the definition of feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Thanks for the vicarious thrill, and the constant terror of slipping and falling to my death, while firmly ensconced in the comfort of my couch.😰
That's what I'm here for! Glad you enjoyed it
Bravo my brotha 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Most excellent !
That is one hell of a hike, David! And amazing footage! Kind regards from Brazil!
cheers!
It is super, super expremly hike! Not everybody can do it! You are great adventurer! 👍
My hands are sweeting just to see you climbing 😅🙌
I was terrified just watching this. My palms got sweaty around the 12-minute mark on a very narrow section. I am terrified of heights. I get super nervous going over many bridges. We went to the Grand Canyon once and in all the photos of me I am no closer than 20 feet from the edge. I was horrified there were safety rails. Kudos to you for confronting your fear and doing some amazing things I wish I could do.
What a great video!!!! I am too much of a weenie to do this but loved this. Proud of you!
thank you Priscilla. this place isn't for everyone, I'm glad I was able to take you along with me on this journey
