  • The Ultimate Guide to Zion National Park
    I am lucky enough to be within driving distance of Zion National Park. Because of this, I've made MANY trips there. Zion is amazing.
    Recently, I started thinking more about how it was for our first trip to the park. It was intimidating. The trails, the permits, parking, traffic....where do you start?
    Here. You start here, by watching this video. I decided to put together years of video from our trips to Zion National Park into a single video, condensing all of the trails and quirks. I've been there. Almost all of the shots in this video were shot by me on my visits to Zion National Park. This isn't a stock video put together by someone who downloaded and Google searched things; I was there. The goal is to help you plan your trip to Zion from someone who has been there so many times, they know the park like the back of their hand.
    First, I will cover the main hikes;
    The Zion Narrows
    Riverside Walk
    Taylor Creek Middle Fork
    Wildcat Trail
    The Zion Subway
    West Rim Trail
    Angels Landing
    Emerald Pools
    Canyon Overlook
    Pine Creek
    Then, I'll go into more about the park. The shuttle system. The basic layout of Zion National Park. The main road; Highway 9. Zion Canyon. Hazards like flash floods, animals, rock slides and cyanobacteria.
    And then there's the permit system. That could be a whole video by itself. Do you go to the backcountry desk or get permits online? How about the Zion Express system? What works best for you? How about the crowds? Are there ways to get around the crowds?
    Then there is the Visitor Center, Zion Outfitters, the South Campground....
    And the rules about Zion Canyon. Can you drive there? Do you need a shuttle? Do you need permits?
    Watch the video and find out.
    I hope this helps you plan your trip and enjoy your visit. Zion National Park is amazing. It will blow your mind.

    Best times to avoid the crowds are April to the first half of May and September, October. In between those times are when students are out of school and whole families go on vacation making it a nightmare.

    The last time I did Zion was in March and no shuttles were running. The higher Altitudes were still covered in snow. The valley though was in the 40's and 30's at night. Some people but not many. I drove up to Bryce and got into a blizzard. They got an additional 8 inches of wet snow. They closed the park, but I still camped at the campground. I was the only one there. The next morning it was sunny, and I had the entire park to myself for about 2-3 hours. I was the 1st to drive down roads still packed with snow and hike the trails. I got a ton of photos. I got to see Bryce in winter which was really cool. After leaving there I went to Lake Powell where I met up with the editors of Backpacker Magazine and did a hike with them. They were starting to drop the water level on Lake Powell and we went and did a side canyon that was not cover with water anymore. We were probably the 1st to hike that canyon since they flooded it with the lake. It was a good trip.

    I’ll definitely second the recommendation to bike into the canyon. Was there with the family (spouse + 2x kids) in fall of 2020. We had our bikes on the trip and weren’t keen on the shuttle due to COVID (pre-vax period) so made the call. It’s up-grade most of the way in but never steep. Nice way to see stretches of the canyon that just flash past on the shuttle. The way out, however, was a ride I’ll remember forever. Even though a bit worn from the angel’s landing hike, we carved our way down-canyon in the dying light of the day. Even caught and passed a few shuttles! Couldn’t have been better.

    Great video, as always. We visited Zion in May of 2022 and had a great time. Since we’re from the East Coast we just stayed on EDST which made it easy to be up and out of our hotel by 6:30 am and get to the visitor center parking area in time to be in line for the first park shuttle run of the day. We had traveled to Zion the day before, arriving just after lunch and there was zero parking available at the visitor center. So, yeah, parking fills up fast and stays full all day. There’s a separate shuttle system that runs back and forth through Springdale that drops people at the visitor center where you can then transfer over to the park shuttle system. If you’re staying at a hotel in Springdale this might be a good option.

    Another fantastic and informative video! I'd love to mention some of the East side trails (aside from Canyon Overlook). Alltrails shows about 25 trails on the East side (after the tunnel). I've managed to avoid crowds and even be alone on several. I suspect if people knew what they were missing on the East side, the main canyon would become less congested. I've spent three days day hiking just the East side and feel like I discovered the real Zion. Some hikes are super easy, other's super hard.

      Agreed on bikes! Last year my wife and I rented eBikes from Zion Outfitters for the day, and it was an absolute blast. We were completely alone the whole way up the main canyon, a really surreal and beautiful experience. Also meant we were avoiding the insane lines for the shuttle in mid-June, and thus also got to do more in a day (we biked in, hiked the Narrows, and biked back before lunch). Something to consider for anyone traveling far to see Zion, for me the memories of that day are totally worth the cost of the bike rentals.

Many Pools is the one on the list that is for sure family friendly -- look this up on alltrails and you can see reviews with a map. I would recommend you definitely check out the dead tree that is shown as a waypoint on the map, and ascend up to the "saddle" before you turn around, to get good views to the north and see the backdoor route up to the Cable/Deertrap plateau

      There are still hikes you can do without permits; narrows bottom up, canyon overlook, observation point (I think), emerald pools, etc. But a lot of them require permits, for sure. Maybe look into grand staircase escalante off Hole in the Rock Road. Tons to do out there and no permits required.

  • @billj5645
    @billj5645 Před 2 lety +1

    It's a shame it's so crowded these days. There is lots to see but if crowds bother you then you might want to go somewhere else. If you are a cyclist that is the best way to go up into the canyon- it's a fun ride, very scenic of course, and you only have to worry about a few buses. You don't have to worry about parking and can take your bike right up to the trailheads.

  • @thosedownwithadventurekids3458

    Zion is just something else! For those of you who aren't local like I am ;), it is pronounced Zy-inn, not Zy-onn. But anyway, Jerry PLEASE maybe try the Golden Cathedral off of Hole-in-the-Rock Road near Escalante, I'm looking at it to give it a try to go backpacking for Memorial Day weekend (I know, stupid idea to go during a holiday). I would really like to see your insight on the trail, if not, it would be super cool if you did Coyote Gulch from the Hurricane Wash side so I can see how to do it correctly. I ended up scrapping the trip when I almost made it to the confluence of Red Well and Hurricane Wash because the conditions were less than ideal and I just turned around. Love your videos man! Zion is truly beautiful and manna from heaven despite how crowded it is ;).

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Před 2 lety

      I've been wanting to do Golden Cathedral, but from the top down so I'd rappel through it. Unfortunately, the guy I normally canyoneer with did it last year and I couldn't go. It's on the list, but not sure how long it'll take to get there. I've done Coyote Gulch twice, but I went in Crack in the Wall and out at Jacob Hamblin both times. Not sure what it's like from Hurricane Wash.

Unfortunately I was basically driving through (staying one night) so I didn't have time to go up the main canyon. But I definitely want to get back there at some point this year.

    Decades ago I visited, staying in the cabins, it was a sleepy small respected place. Wonder what came first; the decision to develop the Park further with huge visitor centers etc., or did the crowds come first? I think the development came first... Now hoards are ruining it. Hope a lottery system is implemented soon to reduce these unbelievable hoards.I admire the extraordinary work done on the paths, just beautiful!

      Luckily, they seem to be heading more and more to permits. Permitting Angel's Landing was long over due. I can still find peace and solitude in Zion, but it takes a lot more work (and sometimes ropes!)

    Note: When hiking bottom up at the subway stay on the west side of the creek as much as possible cross to the east side when necessary then cross cross back to the west side again. There is a trial on the Westside that will make your hike better. About a mile before the subway which to the Eastside.

    Just got back from Zion. Beautiful place, too crowded for my liking. Parking at the visitor center is a crap shoot, but after 10-15 minutes I was able to snag one. I would avoid this place in summer. April was perfect weather.

      The summer is when we like to break out the rappelling gear and hit up the wet canyons. Definitely cuts back on the crowds when a rope and harness are required for entry!

    hello, love your channel! very helpful! do you know about the Observation Point? I thougt it was similar view to Angel's Landing? The trail within the Zion is closed due to rockfall. There are a few more routes from the East, through East Mesa trail in the Pondersa Ranch. Do you know if you can get to Observation Point from there? Thank you!

      I know you can get to Observation Point from the east. I think East Rim Trail, but haven't done it yet. There is often rockfall closing Observation Point, which is actually why we haven't done it yet. I believe its pretty much across the main canyon from Angel's Landing. Supposed to be incredible.

      Sorry. I haven't tried the new permit system for Angel's. I believe you can check in for cancellations the day of at the backcountry desk at the main visitor's center though. I saw someone do that (unfortunately they didn't have any cancellations for the guy.) Another thought; you may want to ask them if you can hike it with a west rim trail permit. You can take West Rim up Angel's Landing or down from Lava Point and lots of people add Angel's Landing onto that trip. Actually have a permit for West Rim on that day. Maybe I'll see you there.

      It's a relatively new thing (like maybe the past 5 years?). I'm super cautious with water, so I've brought my own or filtered at springs in that area. I'd recommend calling a BLM office in the area or the park itself to get more information.

    What trails are good for children 9-13 years old? And best place to park an 30’ RV?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Před 2 lety

      Depends on the children and how tolerant they are to hiking. I would think Emerald Pools, Canyon Overlook and Riverwalk would be safe bets. If they are more used to hiking, maybe up to the saddle at Angel's Landing (but not up the chains.) Taylor Creek would be easy as well. I think they'd have fun in the narrows and you can always turn around when you've had enough; just remember you have to walk back as far as you walked in. Unfortunately, I don't have an RV, so I haven't paid any attention to where you can park one. There is the tunnel to take into consideration. Pretty sure it isn't wide enough for two way traffic given the width of most RV's. I know they will stop traffic one way to let people through but I'm not familiar with the policy there.

      @JerryArizona  Před 2 lety

      There were two spots we swam, but if we had been more patient, we could've waited in line and maybe only gotten in up to our waists. Otherwise, it was normally ankle to knee deep. But that will change somewhat, depending on the river flow. I'd plan worst case you may swim (for a very short section), but ask for current conditions at the back country desk.

    best time of the year to visit? im thinking i wanna go in the fall.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Před 2 lety +1

      Depends on what you're doing. Winter is cold but can have lower crowds. But obviously hikes in the water are cold and there is ice and snow that can make some hikes more dangerous. Spring is cool with less chance of snow/ice, but the spring run off makes the canyons with water dangerous. Summer is brutally hot, but can be perfect for technical canyons where you're in the water more. Fall is cooler, but early fall/late summer can bring monsoons and flooding. If you just want to hike the 'standard' trails, I would recommend spring or fall.

      Not really. There are some smaller 'swimming holes' along the creek downstream from Pine Creek. You can park along the road (after the long tunnel and partway down the switchbacks) then hike down to the creek. Right around 37.21455, -112.95772. Park, cross the road and look for a faint trail going down into the canyon.

      I would not recommend this for a non-experienced hiker, much less one with a 1 year old strapped on their back. If that isn't enough to deter him, then I have to ask why? Why bring a child on a hike that's on the 10 most dangerous hikes in the world list? Even if it all goes well, it's not like the child will remember the experience. Take the kid on riverside walk or one of the other mellower hikes if you want them to experience nature.
