If I remember correctly the metal face will face the wheel hub. Make sure you seat it all the way. I made the mistake of not seating it far enough and ended up going through a 5 gallon bucket of hydro fluid over the mowing season until I opened it back up. You’ll need to use a piece of pipe as a set tool being a socket is no where long enough to use.

Not a problem. There’s not many videos out there opening up a hydro drive so I was going in blind. 60 or so hrs on the rebuild and still going strong.
