  • Grasshopper is back with the Kubota D1305 Engine! This engine has serious TORQUE!!! We got to try it out. However it was a rainy day, but we only had it for a day so we tried it in the tall, wet grass! It proved to be a better test anyway!
    This 900D was setup with the 72" Powerfold Deck. We went straight to our tallest grass. It performed beautifully! The grass we cut was a foot tall in places. With 72" of wet, tall grass the mower had plenty of power to keep on keeping on! We mowed at a fast pace even through these conditions!
    If you want a mower that wont power out you better be looking at this Grasshopper 900D!!!

    The 900D definitely outperforms the 725D. I initially purchased the 725D for tall grass and steep mowing of pond dams etc and the 725D just didn't have the power or hill climbing ability I needed. A year later in 2018 (after the 900D release) I called the local Grasshopper rep explaining my issue and he brought out a brand-new 900D. Both mower decks were set up with most of the their weight applied to the tractors to improve traction. I could not believe the difference in power and climbing ability of the 900D. Both machines were very stable on hills but the 725D wasn't even close in climbing and power performance. I honestly couldn't believe the difference and didn't expect the 900D to do what I needed. The engine hp for both machines is 25hp which is one reason I was skeptical. BUT the difference is the engine displacement being much larger on the 900D. This equates to way more torque (larger pistons etc) while also lowering the work load on the engine. As a bonus this allowed Kubota to lower engine RPMS thus reduce engine stress during extreme demand. Basically these engines are derated in power to meet the max 25hp spec. The 25hp number is key as diesel engines over 25hp must have additional emissions equipment which adds a lot of cost to the equipment. Everything about it is better except for the price as its a few thousand more in cost. I used a 72" deck on both machines and you just can't believe how much better the 900D performed. I would have purchased it first but in 2017 the 900D was not out yet which is why I had to wait a year before trying one.

      I tried the 725D’s as well and thought it lacked power. I also had a real problem with the radiators clogging badly with grass clippings and trash causing an overheat shutdown every time we mowed unless we stopped every 2-3hr and washed them out completely. Got 2 of the 937g3’s as I was skeptical of the diesel radiator issue I had so I opted for gas engines. Best mowers I’ve ever used.

      @johnhalter8317 Před rokem

      Another lie I sold my 700 series to buy this and it has way less torque, my old 700 series would pull this thing backwards. The spec sheet even shows that and since they both use the same motor and the 900 weighs more it can’t compete with a 700.

  • @axeman33333
    @axeman33333 Před 3 lety

    After owning 2 Woods(same as Grasshoppers) for 10yrs and 2 Grasshopper 729’s for 8 yrs, I gave the 725D’s a try. All front deck mowers of course. Less power than gas 729’s(bogged down easily) and over heating a lot due to radiators clogging up with clippings so badly(continually stopping to wash them out). Poor design there. Dealer allowed me to return them and get 2 of the 937G3’s. They’re beasts and absolutely the best mowers I’ve ever used/owned. Wider tires, fuel injected, more power, duel fuel tanks,.....Love ‘em! So glad I didn’t keep the 725D’s.

It is easy to keep clean, doesnt absorb as much heat keeping the mower cooler. Lots of reasons went into brown. But none of them are what looked the coolest. It is all practical!

      The 900 has better ground clearance for tough work, a larger tires for more traction.
      The only reasons NOT to go with the 900 series is lack of funds, or weight. The 900 is a HEEEEEAAAAVY unit. If you're mowing long slopes, look elsewhere. Other than that, don't bother with the 700, if you can afford the 900 series.

    • @MerzFarmEquip
      @MerzFarmEquip  Před 2 lety

      Little bit of difference between the mowers. The overall power is probably there on 40 Hp Ferris initially but this 1.3L has more torque and won't pull down. Even in this video you can see it won't . Biggest difference is gas versus diesel engines. 3 Cylinder diesel is going to pull down and have more torque than a twin cylinder gas.
      Neither one struggles for power!

    I got the 928D with the 6' 9772 deck and it was bogging down in 4" grass I expected more out of this diesel it's a dog maybe I'll try changing the fuel filter? The deck is designed stupid also collects a lot of grass and very hard to take off and clean.

    • @MerzFarmEquip
      @MerzFarmEquip  Před rokem +1

      Don is that a 28 hp Kubota Diesel? Check fuel filter, check to make sure the belts aren't slipping too. If the belt has any "gloss" to it try replacing that as well. When replacing the belt spin each pulley to make sure they spin freely and none of them are rough. If the belt slips it will get hot and then end up with a glossy coating, making it much more suspect to slipping easier and easier. That in turn makes so the blades dont spin as fast and therefore material can build up under that deck.

    • @dony.9014
      @dony.9014 Před rokem

      @@MerzFarmEquip Thank-you I will check those things. Yes it is a 28 hp. Diesel will check fuel filter 1st. I think the way the deck is designed contributes to the bogging down in that although it is a deep high deck it collects a lot of grass underneath because it has these small plates about 2 for every blade that I guess are there to mulch the grass but instead make it collect and hang on the pan and bog it down. I might take those small plates out. I think Toro was the 1st to start putting those plates in to mulch the grass. A good designed deck does not collect grass it moves it out. After using the mower for 1 hr. I spent 2 hrs. cleaning the deck and I'm still not done, might take it off tomorrow so I can finish cleaning and sharpen the blades.

      @tjkadar Před 6 lety +1

      By EPA regs, if it doesn't have an exhaust treatment system it has to be under 25 hp. kubotaengine.com/d1305-e4b has the power listed at 24.8 hp. Torque is right around 59 ft-lbs. Stout little motor!

      Stan Wilhite that is list price and there are multiple discounts available. But it is not a cheap mower. From the 3 cylinder diesel engine to the pump and wheel motors to the quality components throughout the mower it adds up. But if your going to use a mower for a large number of hours there is nothing that will compare to the quality and durability of a Grasshopper 900D!

      @@MerzFarmEquipsorry for the slow reply, mowed my yard once and it’s broke again left side drive doesn’t work. 200 hours last year I broke the drive belt and found all the pulleys were out of line, it was down for two months and had to mow with my 30 and 40 year old mowers. Guess that’s what I do again. I have a great dealer in Orville Ohio who told me he won’t sell any 900. I am an hour away but Scott is real good. This machine was released from Grasshooper with everything wrong, my old 700 had thousands of hour and no problems except it kept getting stuck, my grass has a few springs that appear in the spring. I have had to tow this thing up to the house 4,times so far.
      I am in a wheelchair so when it breaks down I just sit until help arrives. I got tired of calling the neighbors for a tow with the 700, but should have cut fenders and put bigger tires on it instead of buying this garbage. On flat it drives ok but going up a hill right side spins and left side does nothing. I am going to try and hook up a gage to see what pressures are on that side, Scott is searching for the specks. I was a mechanic for over 50 years, this machine needs a full time mechanic on it. It’s a underpowered machine also, my old 700 would pull it backwards. Things keep falling off like the bracket the holds clutch, it’s like factory threw the torque wrench away when the put it together. Well it got the air ride seat on it so it’s comfortable waiting for help every time I mow! Backing off them pumps to tow is fun, I keep a wrench handy so I back off the pumps for towing, that’s how bad this thing is!

    Stay away from this machine mine has been in the shop for a month with a design problem that chews up drive belts. The unit sucks on power and has been nothing but a headache since I bought it. 200 hours on this machine and nothing but problems. The factory support has been awful and I am lucky to have a back up mower a 30 year old Gravely which is a lot more dependable. I like the bigger tires but the rest is just poor. I had a 729 Grasshopper and it was bullet proof, I ran it 2000 hours and got a good trade in price. I need the bigger tires for wet conditions and they do great if the rest of the machine wasn’t so poor!

      John we are disappointed to hear this. We have sold several 900D without any major issues thus far.
      On the drive belts have they swapped out the spring washers? There are 3 cupped washers that are placed back to back, thus putting a spring pressure on them. We had a 725D one time years ago that had these incorrect and it caused drive belt issues.
      If we can be of assistance please let us know. Are you close to Falls City, Nebraska?

  • @johnhalter8317
    @johnhalter8317 Před rokem +1

    Well saying that machine has tons of torque is straight out lie, my old 725D had great torque the 900D is a under powered poor built machine! Mine has been in the shop for over a month at a great dealer.?The factory support to fix a factory mistake has been very poor, waiting over a week now for the parts to fix a design problem on it right now. You definitely need a back up machine if you buy a Grasshopper, mine with 200 hours has never run right a gutless wonder, avoid this machine!!
