Honestly, looking at the floaty animations and how long everything seems to take to execute, I just can’t bring myself to be interested. A beat ‘em up needs heavy impacts and snappy animations, not some overly-eased slow punches.
Regardless of any opinions I may have on the art direction, the game just doesn’t look nearly as responsive as I’d want it to.
Considering, we had an amazing Rash in KI, yes... the art stile was a big turn off for me
ANY version was 100X better then this incoherent mess. Some people never got past the turbo tunnels so they are clueless I get that, but the game was never an incoherent mess of random stuff and mini games thrown together.

BattleToads and Double Dragon seemed like a fever dream of the 90’s for me and my cousin. It was our only knowledge of both franchises, so we basically just thought it was a single game with nothing before or after for both IP’s.
I had no idea how big Double Dragon or Bimmy and Jimmy were when I played Battletoads and DD, I only had eyes for the toads. Still one of my favorite games
Lol me too. Batlletoads and Double Dragon is just so perfect, all the people that complain abou the difficult of the first one should play this one; the difficult is more balanced.

Relatively new here, but I gotta say, I love these intros. I recall the backlash of the Battletoads reboot when it was revealed and admittedly, the new art style was jarring, but when in motion, the game looks pretty stellar.
I want to see TMNT x Battletoads and since the turtles aren't strangers for interdimensional travel this could be a thing.

@@countrygamer9402 you definitely don't. There was a 26 year gap between streets of rage 3 and 4. All 4 brought with it was character backstory, and small story elements from previous games.

_Battletoads_ really is one of those games that tests your determination, and that's what I love about it. It doesn't get nearly enough attention or love in my opinion.

I played Battletoads 2020 as part of my Twitch line up about one year ago, I found it to be fun game that... just needed online coop
I also have been a huge battletoads fan since childhood. I mostly loved the original NES offering because of how much of a genre shift it had. Especially for the time.
I saw the announcement for this back at that show too, and told myself I would keep tabs on it, but not have expectations. I saw what direction the games went in after the first and it wasn't one I particularly cared for (more pure beatemup and less game experience)
So when I heard the reboot years later wasn't really received all that favorably I put off checking on it for a long time. Then one day, I just watched a full playthrough. And man, the two things people hated about it (art style and lots of game genres) are what I love most about it. I am happy they chose to go in that direction and really aim towards the original NES game more than anything for its design. Also, I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY with how good the script and animated scenes were. I know back in the day they had tried to have a show about it and failed. In this case, if they had released these cutscenes as a TV show it would would have been a smash hit. Possibly my favorite aspect of the reboot.
I still haven't played it yet but plan to change that soon. This is definitely one of those reboots or late coming sequels that end up not doing well, but IMO we were blessed to ever get. I am so thankful Battletoads at least got one more entry of the same quality and style of the one that still ranks as a top chldhood gaming experience for me.

Honestly, this and Streets of Rage 4 were great on my Steam Deck. Went on a bit of a retro beat 'em up bender after playing Shredder's Revenge.

I bought this the day it came out and it's been an absolute blast... But your critique is absolutely right. I love the random "wait, why am I in an Olympics game?" and the WarioWare style quick thinking in the mini games, it's a good way to call back to the original in gameplay, both games changing from beat-em-up to platforming to Turbo Bikes to beat-em-up again. However, you're right, they go a little to hard with the switches. I had a marathon with my friends but the space shooter segment was so hard that we couldn't beat it and haven't played it since, I haven't beaten it because I really want my first playthrough to be with friends. Maybe I need to change that mindset.
Regardless, I still cannot recommend it enough. I want reboots like this and Killer Instinct to succeed so we have a higher chance for other Rare follow-ups to come out. I'd kill to see Dlala make more Battletoads. A remake of the originals using the new engine could be incredibly fun, I was nitpicking the lack of classic callback (friendly fire, old enemy designs, Dark Queen being hot) but an easy remake would bring that Dlala life to that.
Even I’ve forgot to play this game back when it came out out three years ago. I’ve played it and remember enjoying it,but never finished it. Looking at this game now makes me want to play this.

I remember when this game was first announced and people complained that it looked like a cheap flash game...
I thought, what flash games are YOU playing cuz this has impressive and detailed animations!
I'd tell you, but the majority of the Flash games are too pervy for CZcams's delicate sensibilities. The clips shown on this video gives the title vastly too much justice. The (few) action stages _seem_ impressive...but then you get cut scenes with barely any animation, TONS of out-of-place mini-games (everything from Rock-Pap-Scissors to _Olympic Archery_ for some reason), exceptionally slow 3D Turbo Bike levels (you see the clip in this video? That's as fast as it gets) bullethell with poor gameplay and a total lack of awareness of what _makes_ a bullethell...it's a bloody mess. Do you like pushing & pulling boxes around a giant map with absolutely no combat? That drags on for 20+ minutes? While the action stages (as few as there are) are completed in 5 minutes? This game is for you!
Battletoads 2020 just lacks focus and has absolutely no direction. It it was a brawler first with a few platform/shooter/racing stages it'd be fine. This game goes all over the proverbial map, chucking different play styles constantly and doing it _badly._ Some of the humor is good, but even I got sick of it after awhile. The 'Toads are _constantly_ breaking the 4th wall like a bad frog parody of Toadpool. The art style is barely a step-up from Cal-Arts (which is already the dumpster slime of art), and the character designs are hit-or-miss - more often than not a miss. Plus, the animation quality in the over-abundant plethora of cut scenes and mini-games are absolutely minimalist. Flash, indeed.
I understand the devs were trying to keep things fresh and interesting (or they were trying to cater to my cousin with ADHD), but with the constant changes in genre, and just how long and repetitive the mini-games are, it just got _boring._
And, again, it's not beat'em up -> mini-game -> beat'em up -> etc.
It's beat'em up -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game -> beat'em up -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game ->mini-game -> mini-game -> beat'em up -> mini-game -> mini-game -> mini-game -> etc.
And those mini-games? The vast majority of them _suck._ The Turbo Tunnels are slow and boring. Nothing else is remotely as cool as the surfing/spelunking/flying/etc. stages of the original. Battletoads 2020 is a _flop._ This is one video where either Jirard is exceedingly disingenuous, or he hasn't played the game yet.

one of my earliest gaming memories was battletoads.. I've never been able to finish the old games but I love that this title is back for people to enjoy

Battletoads reboot could have been much worse, and on it's own, is a good, enjoyable game. However, I can't but feel like in another universe, there is a much better reboot that exists.

Last year I finished this game. I really enjoyed all my time while doing so. Still as Jirard mentioned the change of play style did got on my nerves more times that I would've want. Still, everyone should try this game.

I would love to see you complete CrossCode. It's one of my favourite games and It's sooooo Sadysfying to complete. It's an RPG in the setting of an MMO. Essentially an offline MMO RPG where everyone acts like it's online. It's just such an gorgeous game I loved it. You probably haven't heard of it because it's criminally underrated. Like the hidden gem of the hidden gem games. 😅

The thing with Battletoads is that the original games benefited from the tone being left to individual players interpretation and that with its art direction it could reasonably be as gritty or goofy as you wanted. The reboot giving definitive personalities and a specific type of humor to a modern version may have made some dislike inevitable. Throw in the comparisons to Streets of Rage 4, a beat em up sequel from the same time with far more consistent gameplay and an aesthetic direction that its fans felt did pay proper respect to the classics? There was no way Battletoads 2020 was escaping unscathed.
There were SO many artistic styles so much better. The arcade game? The SNES game? Streets of rage 4 a high quality art style? We get flash joke cartoon graphics. This game was trash

I remember wanting battletoads as a kid, I was really into TMNT, and seeing this in Nintendo Power made me want it, but I never got it.

The game's definitely fun, but the biggest issue with the game is that there aren't enough beat 'em up stages; which is bizarre to say about a game that's supposed to be a beat 'em up. There are just too many different mini games in this, which is unfortunate, because the combat system they built is fun!! I do wish Zitz had more transformation attacks though, and he should definitely get his drill and chainsaw back.

I suspected the art change happened because of "Rise of the TMNT." I mean, look at it. (Also, the Dark Queen showed too much skin originally for my own liking, but I can understand the complaints when something had been in dormant for decades get changed. Imagine if that happens to "Kamen America" 50 years later.)

Honestly feel the 2020 game is a wonderful addition to the series, and it's genuinely fun! The art style I thought fit the characters rather well, and I love the transformations they made for the characters!

This game is awesome. I played a lot of nes and snes battletoads as a kid, and loved this new game. Sure it’s not the same difficult brawler, but it rules.

I was super hyped when this got announced, as I am a 90's kid at heart. First thing I noticed, though, was that I very much dislike the designs of the Toads and Dark Queen. Especially Dark Queen. She looks so boring, a massive downgrade from such a stylized original design. The toads just look weird.
I dunno, when you have a long dormant franchise like this, that's main audience is going to be nostalgic adults, I think you bring back the characters they're nostalgic for. This isn't the type of game that is going to grab a new, younger audience.
That said, I don't think the game looks bad, it just doesn't feel like Battletoads to me. It's actually beautifully animated and has its own, more modern cartoon style. Gameplay actually looks good, too. I haven't played it, yet, mostly because it does carry an air of disappointment for me, but if this game was released physically, I'd absolutely buy a copy and play it eventually.
Personally I would have gone with a revival that's more faithful, in design, to the original characters, but I would have made it way more edgy. An M-rated, classic beat'me up, with really exaggerated 90's edge and violence.
I like the art style and Finished it the 1st Day I played it. It's worth a play and I wish I could have done it co-op. I also thought it was funny in a few spots. Some of the mini-games got annoying but I'm not sure what everyone's aversion to this was to this game.

credit where credit is due. the one and only thing this game properly innovated in a way that made sense was having hyper bikes be 3rd person instead of from the side. it generally made deaths feel less cheap. I would have loved to see this in a game that didn't actively shit on it's legacy.
Honestly, I love how they made The Dark Queen less "we want you to be horny" but I think they went too far with redesigning her.

I just started this with my son. It is fun. :)
I actually liked this game, just had issues with Evelyn Volkmire's (The Dark Queen) redesign. She still gave me a good chuckle and going back to previous games reminded me how petty she could be. Just think she could have kept that classic sex appeal her Character was also known for.

Truth be told lack of online coop was the only problem with this game for me. It launched at the WORST possible time for that. It was a fun beat em up and much like the original game switched things up from that often and did it well. Sadly looks like the devs won't be putting that in their next game either Disney illusion either.
Seeing how hard/unfair the og Battletoads was at various points this remakes feels like a genuen effort to recreate a classic that gets as close as it can to replicating it while being a love letter to the series.

I'm sorry, Jirard, but calling the original Battletoads a by the numbers beat'em up is just insane. It's more of an action-platformer with very innovative - albeit insanely difficult - mechanics and some brief beat'em up sections sprinkled here and there.
Regardless, very good video. Wasn't on my list, but now I'm gonna play it for sure!
Hey, even if you're putting your completionist rating at the start instead of the end, it would still be cool to see and hear the rating done by Smash voiceover guy at the end like you used to do. It makes the ending feel so much more impactful. Maybe you could restate the rating and roll that ending like before.
The Dark Queen in this looks more like a mall Goth than an evil overlord. That disappoints me so very much.

I feel like people act like different gameplay styles outside of beat em up isn’t what Battletoads is, but that’s what it was in the very first entry, u had platforming, racing with the bikes, and more, even the arcade game had a shooter section, but because of Rash being in Killer Instinct & the grittier nature of the arcade game I feel shaped everyone’s expectations for the series being gritty, violent, gorey, & solely a beat em up (outside of the shooting level) but again as far back as the first entry it was more than a violent punching game imo

If the intent of the original devs was to answer the question "What would happen if you mixed Double Dragon with Loony Tunes?", Battletoads 2020 gives them the best answer in my opinion. That said, maybe mixing in five genres into one game instead of fourteen would have been a good enough way to maintain the zaniness and insanity they were going for. Some online capability wouldn't have hurt either, especially during the pandemic.
Tbh, I don't think it's the artstyle that looks bad, it's more the character re-designs. Compare them to the old boxart or even Rash in Killer Instinct 2013. Apart from Pimple, the toads look too scrawny and the Dark Queen doesn't really look very dark or queen like (which is kind of the point in the story, but still). I genuinely think that the cutscenes are well animated and the humour has some of Rare's old cynical and 4th wall breaking jabs that made games like Banjo so charming.
Dark Queen looks like female version Dr. Draken from Kim Possible... Which is Mad Scientist trope.
Which kinda tells a lot about how wrong was the design direction they took. I mean even If you want to make design less sexualized you still need Dark and Queen parts to be present... Something that tells viewer that this is royalty dubbing into Dark magics.

I was considering getting it, then you said that the last beat'em up level is at the end of act 2. That's wild and honestly feels like it lost the script at that point.
Yeah, I have it on game pass. More like halfway through the game there isn't really any combat. I played it on the hardest difficulty. Nearly gave up on the space invaders style levels that drag out to long.

I feel like compared to a lot of people I was VERY understanding of this game. But...the genre changes became too much. Start us off with a decent beat 'em up and then almost every other genre they tried was just...not a great use of the genres. Then when they finally let us beat 'em up again, I'd practically forgotten how.
I'm all for it getting a sequel, but I think that sequel needs to stick to its strengths.

Hot take: This is EASILY the best game in the series. I first tried to play the classic game and the arcade game on Rare Replay and got bored too quickly. Then I played the 2020 game and even finished it. After that I gave the old games a second chance and now even with the rewind feature I still despise the classic game because of how unfair the difficulty in this game is. The life system, which is pretty outdated nowadays, made the old game even more unfair. The arcade game I still don't really like it a lot but at least it was much more pleasant to play. However, I couldn't like this game more because of the repetitive fighting and in the Rare Replay version you basically have infinite lives that make you always respawn at the exact spot you died making the game pretty unchallenging. If the life system was supposed to take you back to start of the game, I would have probably despised this game, too.
2020 however was actually fun to play because it has the gameplay variety only the classic game had without being unfairly frustrating as well as no infinite respawn the arcade had. Also they expanded the combat in this game which was only button mashing in the arcade game by giving you a few combos to perform when you were in a beat'em up stage. The game has an actual story as well. Can't say this to the old games. Sure, the humor is kinda mixed in this game and the dark queen kinda looks weird but who even cares if the game is actually fairly playable? Gameplay is far more important. Besides the dark queen actually has personality in this game. I don't even mind the minigames that were counted as actual stages. The only one I found weird was the rock paper scissors thing. Any other minigame was fun to play like a loading screen that allowed you to amuse before the next stage starts. I don't get the hate of the artstyle, I think it looks great. People say it's too cartoonish and not dark but this is a game about 3 fighting toads, I think the cartoonish designs fit perfectly well. Besides was any Battletoads game except Arcade dark?
This is why I will never agree to people who think this game is a disgrace to the franchise. Because it's literally the only Battletoads game so far I actually enjoyed.
May risk coming off as a bot, but I got a queen sized Helix midnight lux mattress and it has been spectacular. Partner had crazy back and shoulder pain and that has been massively reduced and it's just a damn comfortable mattress though I requested a mattress topper to soften it up a bit more (it's free of charge)
