Hello, Helene! What a great way to start the day: a visit from you and Zeus and the book.---I've been building up a collection of Joyce Carol Oates books that's now almost as tall as I am! Haven't read "...the Mulvaneys" yet but it reminds me a little of "Certain People of Importance" (1922) by Kathleen Norris, about a prominent, "high society" family that for some reason gets excluded and loses importance. This book turned me into a Kathleen Norris fan.---The Bryson book sounds like what we call an owner's manual. I've also been collecting his books (loved "A History of Everyday Life") and, because of your reviews I've been collecting Paul Auster books. Now to READ all those books! Lately I'm making more time for reading. I read two books at a time: a backpack book that goes with me and a bedside book that stays home.
I loved reading A Fine Balance long ago and still remember parts of it. I’m due for a reread. Mary Roach also wrote books about the body where she had no previous expertise and for some reason I resent her and Bryson doing that. I will, however, give him a chance and read his book at some point. Roach and I started off on the wrong foot when I first read Working Stiff written by an actual medical examiner then I picked up Roach’s book Stiff. Roach didn’t fair well in that comparison and as I read each of her books that comparison surfaces. Odd.
JCO is one of my favorite authors. I am trying to get through her whole catalog of books, which is extensive! I have A Fine Balance on my shelves right now, you made me want to read it now. I’ve read several Ruth Reichl’s books, all amazing. I’m reading Luster right now, meh...

If you liked Garlic and Sapphires, may I suggest ‘Tender at the Bone’ also by Ruth Reichl. It is an earlier memoir about her childhood and one of the best memoirs I have ever read.

Reading the book was like reading a newspaper account of an event. It did not connect me emotionally with the characters. We both love East of Eden though. Wishing you happiness in these trying times.

Booktube doesn't have longevity for everyone, and sometimes I wonder if it does for me even though I still try to make videos. I miss this era of booktube, circa 2020. I hope you're doing okay, Helene, regardless if you ever return!
