Making Slotting Machine

  • I have always had a problem with wedge grooves, so I decided to build a machine that would solve this problem. I used two gear motors for construction, one for attaching the chuck to the lathe, the other for the drive.
The machine works great, although it still requires a few corrections, but it handles wedge grooves very well

But why the horrible grunching noise at 16:53 when the speed reduction box output wheel goes through 8 and 10 o'clock, is there something wrong inside or is something interfering?
It only makes this noise on the forward to reverse changeover stroke, ie when the tool bar is the most extended, there is no noise when it goes from reverse to forward ie when the tool bar is least extended and it not cutting anything yet.

Why not use standard reaming tools with just an x movement of the support?

This is an amazing machine, superior fabrication skills as always! Forgive me, but I dont understand how it works. Does the cutting bit have to move deeper and deeper into the groove as it cuts? This is well above my abilities of what I might ever do, so maybe it doesnt matter if I dont understand, but I definitely enjoyed watching.
