205. Beekeeping for Beginners - Our First Bees!
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 07. 2022
- How easy is beekeeping for beginners? In this vlog we collect our first bees, prepare a quiet, sheltered area for them, and show how we build the hives where they'll live. We've been researching for months and talked to dozens of beekeepers, but we're also self-taught too and learning new beekeeping skills every day.

Colin you are a natural and talk as if you have been beekeeping for years. What lovely calm bees you have. They won't be like that when Rich gets there. Shaun there is absolutely nothing wrong with white hair when you are a star .love you all xxx
Thank you. I totally feel like I’m winging it at the moment! 🤣 I’ve got a couple of really good professionals at the end of the phone and a shelf full of beekeeping books 📚 The colonies are growing really fast now. xx
You guys won the internet with this one.
Great stuff! Does having two hives make it a "bee & bee"? 😂 They look very happy to me and good to see you two happy as well. Anxious bees? Oh bee-hive!! 😂 (Well, I amuse myself anyway... I'll get my coat...) x
Because it is outside in the fresh air, its an air bee & bee!
BRILLIANT @@Ringelsocke.
chuckles....gotta love 'dad jokes'..
Bees are perfect for you Colin. You have so much in common. You are driven in what you do, but also devoted (emotion). I like how you said you were surprisingly calm. You are a natural.
I'm happy too, that you now have a bee colony. You are helping save the environment and bees as well; thank you! This is a wonderful vlog, entertaining and informative. PS: You both look very professional wearing the bee safety suits.
Just got back from my long-awaited canal holiday on the Oxford canal. That's what originally led me to your channel, a year ago, and I've enjoyed every video you guys have posted. After spending a week on the canal, I gained immense admiration for Shaun's piloting skills! It takes constant and careful focus to navigate a narrowboat along a canal. I had other people there to help me spot obstacles, other boats coming around blind bends, etc.; but with Colin engaged in his marvelous narratives, Shaun must've had to do this mainly on his own (and all the while, with Colin trying to make him laugh!!).
The other exciting thing that happened was that a particularly well-equipped, sleek looking, silver colored narrowboat passed us on our first full day of cruising. Yes - it was Silver Fox! I was able to exchange a few words with her new owners and snap a quick pic. With 4700 miles of canal in England, what are the chances???!!! Just had to share!
We never had room for a beehive when we had a house, but we did try to plant lots of native plants that would attract them. I always loved to come outside and see all sorts of bees in our garden.
Y'all both did a fantastic job showing us how to set up a bee box. Y'all explained it very well. This would be a good video to educate people. Colin I knew deeply inside my soul you can do all things that even make you go weak in the knee's. You can overcome all of these projects by the word's you say. Word's are healing to the heart and mind. It allows you to achieve more than you thought or breakes you down to dissolve your thoughts. Please don't allow what others say about you to make up who you are angel. You are mighty and you can do anything. Understand? You both are good good men.
"they sound like bees" - PRICELESS. In that suit you look a bit more like Buzz Lightyear. The funniest thing Ive seen in a while. I love your channel - amazing. Keep it up - and keep on with the fight with anxiety. #takecare
What a blog you two make me giggle all the time. You like to best friends I have never met. But the best bit is you have helped my day tho a hard time and I can only say thank you for that.
Very interesting seeing how to set up a hive. Looks like you really did your homework and feel confident with the bees. Can’t wait to see the honey production - best of luck!
I learned today what the inside of a beehive looks like and how you get the bees in. Very interesting so thank you for sharing. Colin, you think you creak, crack and groan at 30? Wait until you hit 60 my friend LOL
Wow, you are so brave to handle all those bees! I knew you wouldn't get stung. It was very interesting to see you build the hives and move your new queen's into their homes. Love you guys.
to bee or not to bee , or in Shauns case to wee or not to wee ? Great episode guys
Yay! Let’s name bees!! We will need pics of them all. Every, single, one. Close up. AAAND GO! 😳🤣
Forgot to say,I’m most impressed with your flat pack put it together skills 🙂 xx
Don't care if you live on a boat or in a house, in England or Scotland. You guys are always entertaining and informative. Keep on what you're doing, I love it!
Thanks 👍
That was fun! Though I bet it must be tiresome to have people always trying to tell you how to do things, and what will and won't work. I'm just glad you are sharing a slice of your lives with us, so thanks for another entertaining vlog. I hope you three (and however many you are now with all the bees and chickens!) have a wonderful week.
Colin, Shaun, How brave are you too. Really good to see Colin build a hive. Moving the two bought colonies across to their new home must have been very scary. Then lastly you placed the Queens in position. Where they each a freebee!!!!!!!! Have a great week. Take care.
Dear Colin and Sean it’s been awhile since I have written to you ever since you were on the canal in fact I am delighted to see that you have made a massive success of this new phase in your life in Scotland through thick and thin ups and downs you’ve been together and are destined to be forever you are a role model to us all what true happiness really is I wish you every success in this new phase of your life and may you be happy healthy and fulfilled and fulfilled and I hope that we can continue to enjoy through your videos your life and adventures
Colin, listen to your trusted bee teachers. Pay no mind to the distractions. Remember haters are going to hate. Pay them no mind.
You did an excellent job putting the bees in their new homes. Looks like there are a lot of happy bees. It’s an interesting process. 🐝 🐝
That suit..."Stay Puft Marshmallow Man"... yes! But at 9:00 mins when you jump with your arms out, it straight up reminded me of the oompa loompas in Willy Wonka's TV room! I'm really enjoying your new adventures, guys. Keep up the good work.
You did just perfectly Colin!!! Could not have done better! I have been sooooo excited for the bees! I am super happy for you! You are a natural! It looks like your girls are loving their new home and they look beautiful and healthy! Super clean and beautiful color! I can't wait to see more of them! YAY!!! BEES!!!
Colin, watching this brought back so many memories from 8 years ago when I started beekeeping with a single box of bees. I hope you enjoy all the near countless aspects that this hobby has to offer. Enjoy learning the craft, as well as the honey, the candles, the furniture wax, skin lotions & potions, shoe polish... ;-)
PS If you haven't already, follow the excellent weekly blog from "The Apiarist", oh and Tom Seeley's Honey Bee Democracy was a revelation to me.
This is marvelous! The bees need all the help they can get! New homes! 😍🙌 fantastic
Well Done and Enjoy the Honey, Take Care, ❤
Loved another one lads, top job and LOL
Hives here in California are painted white. It’s nice to see them in natural wood.
this vlog is absolute fantastic!! I've never seen this whole process so close and clear. Colin you explained it really well. You can show this video to every kid in school, excellent filming Shaun! I have a question: when I see bee houses with hives in the countryside they often have different colors at the entrances - is this just decoration, because the bees are very clever animals and know which hive is theirs or is this necessary?
I think it's a bit of both 👍🏻🐝
it helps them locate their own hive and it's for asthetics as well.
They’re such wonderful little creatures. We’ve had a couple of swarms land in our garden in the past. One moved on but one stayed in the tree for a while so a bee keeper came and took them somewhere safe. They were amazing and even when he was collecting them they weren’t aggressive. Just fascinated. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the bees get and and the colony grows
You are awesome do not stop being you. All 3 of you
Hahaaaa so you didn’t get stung, I knew you wouldn’t 😁 great vlog guy. I’m loving your highland adventures. x
And yet another SUPER Vlog ! So interesting as well !
Here's a question for you !
How do bees, tell the other Bees, where a plentiful supply of pollen is ?
They dance and waggle their bums according to the direction of the pollen !
Smart Bees, although they are getting fewer and fewer, as wild meadowland disappears !
So keep on breeding them, we need plenty !
So are you going to have the viewers name the bees, like what you did for the chickens?
Lol. Great what you two are doing…love it.
Beeeeeees!!! 🐝 This brought so much unexpected JOY!
Great vlog guys !!! Loved it, thankyou xx
Wonderful! The bee’s will be happy in their new home.
They sure will x
Another amusing but educational video.
Thank you
Colin, my gran used used to go and tell her problems - as well as family news - to the bees. She said they were always interested, and rarely disagreed with her. It would seem they might actually help with your anxiety issues to me. Crack on, boys.
From a fellow Beekeeper, the wax melted with coconut oil and olive oil makes a great hand balm for winter welcome to the swarm
Good luck with the bees, love to see more videos on their progress 👍
Delightful Video, enjoyed every minute.
Absolutely awesome. I hope that all goes well with your Bees. They are going to be very happy with you both. :-).
I arrived to hear/see about bees - learnt about spider and whale farts. I love this channel.
It is so nice to see you both excited about keeping bees. Have you got Langstroth hives?
I have been keeping bees for over 25 years and have quite a few now with over 500,000
bees. Yes, if you take ten bee keepers you will have ten different views on how to do things.
I will never make any comments about what you do. I look forward to seeing your success.
I have always enjoyed your vlogs. Stay happy & keep up the great vlogs. Ashley xxx
🐝🐝🐝
These are the National hives.
I am so excited like you two! And very happy for Colin…and the good work! Honey will came!
So I now know spiders fart and whale farts can hold a horse but now Mr. smarty pants do bees fart? I expect a full report! 😂😂😂😂
You have flat pack construction mastered. Bee happy!
We helped you name the chickens now we can name bees.
😂
Buzzy Mc Bee face...
Sting, featuring the Bee Gees and Mud Honey?
Ha ha ha! Great idea.. you first.
"Sounds like bees." What a wonderful thing to say. Now you have to name them. Well the queens at least.
Great video...really getting your new home sorted.👍
your joy is our joy gentlemen....we're happy because your happy...look forward to your first harvest of honey...
I've never seen how hives are populated before. Colin makes it look easy. Thanks for another great video!
Good luck with the bees. No doubt you're buzzing. 🐝
I enjoy it when you ramble. We used to keep bee's and enjoyed it. Have fun❣️
Best of luck with this new venture. Can't wait to watch as it develops
:) I don't have bees, but I do have around 5000 composting worms living in various dedicated boxes. (I have a huge vegie garden) They're collectively called Neville and Irene. :)
Guys, I’m late to the “party” as our Rogers internet crashed in Canada for 2 days. Back to the Dark Ages! Happy to see your faces today, and meet your bees! Loved seeing the hive boxes being built, and bees introduced. Quite the sci fi bee suit! And, Sean, I always have to pee, too! Until next week!
This has been great to watch. Looking forward to watching as the hives change and produce honey. You look like you’ve taken to be a bee keeper extremely well. Stay safe and enjoy x
Your enthusiasm is contagious❣️
Thanks for another very informative & entertaining vlog. 🐝well
As a young boy I use to help my Uncle tend the bees on the family farm. After years of doing this I was never stung once, even when completely covered in them, sort of like a bee coat, robbing the hive for some sweet clover honey and comb.
How interesting it is keeping the bees, it's a wonderful idea bee keeping, I'm a butterfly lover and when I was younger bred butterflies and moths small tortoiseshell, peacock, red admiral, and comma butterflies I find interesting, they're nettle feeders for the caterpillars, keeping stinging nettle in the house to feed the caterpillars gave me a headache but I still kept them it was good releasing the butterflies once they had emerged. xxx
I'm a bee keeper - I keep the bees out. but I never wave them away if one gets too close.
It's always a pleasure watching you, it makes the whole world seem.. fine.. for a few minutes.
Lovely too see you boys establishing a lovely home xxxxxx
Great to see you getting the bee hives up and running. Hoping that you will have lots of yummy honey by next July when we are back in Scotland. We would love to buy some. Great work guys and well done.
my advice is to let the bees let you know what they want you to do to help them :) Good luck and wait for your 1st swarm :)
Go for it Gents, bees don’t pick up on your tension. If they pick up on that they would pick up on your want to take care of them so one would cancel t’other out. I’ve done beginning bee keeping course it was fascinating. Alas I didn’t carry it on. I will, vicariously, through yourselves. Good luck.
Really enjoyed this vlog. First time I've seen the process of building a site for the bee hives; putting the boxes together; introducing the bees to their new home. The location chosen looks really good. The straps might also help with stabilizing the hives during strong winds. Enjoy your need venture.
Seedbomb ordered. Looking forward to seeing the spring bee video. This video was great.
Awesome! Thank you!
That was brilliant, thank you!
Thank you for such a lovely inside view of beekeeping! I know you two will be great bee daddy's. and another note i just want to thank you two for presenting me with an incite to my anxiety problem and i sought help from my Md. I'm pleased to announce i can actually go to a Fair or an event now without wanting to flee and never return. The thoughts there but i don't need to act on it anymore. bless you Colin an Shaun
Great job! I bet tending to the bees will be a good calming, happy place. Thanks for this!
Soon honey for your oats! My uncle kept bees - we used to sit and watch them land and go into their hive. Thank you for sharing from Brisbane Australia.
Well done lads! What a lovely home for your bees!! 🐝🍯
We now have 🐝 bees living in my hedgehog 🦔 house after a swam two weeks ago.
Side note as a child I believed that the bubbles in a spirt level were goldfish farts 😂
Well done to you both - Colin you are far braver than I am! Hope the bees have settled into their new home!
Great video, gents. :) Don't worry about your bees; you've got everything set up really nicely. I'm sure they'll bee OK.
Buzzing 😂👍👍
Happy to have checked out your channel again. I absolutely love it that you are attempting beekeeping. I took an online class and was about to start my journey of beekeeping when a couple of "killer" bees decided to defend my pond from me and I got stung. My doctor said to get rid of the pond. My allergic reaction was not life threatening yet but she told me my next sting might be and recommended an EpiPen. SO....I got rid of my pond and now watch lovely folks like you do the beekeeping.
WOW! Glad you’re ok x
Hooray. I've been waiting to hear about the arrival of the bees. And I agree you are absolutely right then keeping bees is such a calming thing to do. If you're focused on them the time will just pass and you'll look up and realize you've just been several hours in perfectly tranquil activity.
Ultimately the judge of what you're doing is a beekeeper are the bees. If they are happy and productive then you're doing the right thing. Other folks opinions are just that. Listen to the bees instead.
I expect you are going to have such a wonderful time with your new friends. Good luck lads.
I enjoyed this vlog.
To bee or not to bee.
The question we all need to know is...
Have you named all the bees yet? 🤣
Colin, this is really cool. Love the video of the bees
Oh wow...aren't they gorgeous???!!!
Bees around their hive mostly seem to be able sense people’s intentions. Much also seems to depend on the particular bee colony. Some are more defensive than others
Absolutely fantastic can’t wait to see how things go. It’s all very exciting 👍🏻
🐝 🍯🐝🍯🐝🍯🐝🍯🐝🍯🐝🍯
Another interesting vlog. I hope your bees stay Varroa mite free. It has just got into Aust (NSW) and looks like it isn't going to be containable...:( I wish you all the luck with your hives, a lot to learn, but it all helps to keep the mind active. Thank you. Cheers.
Yeah, I've learned already that it's about control rather than elimination. x
i could tell you got a right buzz from making the "Bee Movie" 😉 Don't forget it's not just about the Honey, you could sell Beeswax too 🤔👍
Bless you two, the world needs all the bee keepers it can get. We don't have enough here in America and don't respect them as much as we should. Someday I will have the space to have my own hives, but until then; I'll watch YOU and maybe purchase some Scottish honey in the future. I'm excited for you Colin and look forward to all your pollinator adventures. Have a blessed day
Well done Colin, all safely in their new home. Looking forward to seeing the first honey harvest 👍
Bees need us, we need them….Beeeeeautiful! 🐝🐝🐝
Loved this as always. You are just so funny informative and it’s great to see the bees settled in nicely. You looked great Colin in your bee keepers apparel. Sean supportive as always. Just love you guys. Have great week. 👌👌👌👌
Thanks so much!
Hi both, l grew up with bees they are wonderful. I'm sure you will get some wonderful honey. You will be thinking of a name for it. Great video, you have me bursting into laughter, always great viewing. Thank you both and see you next time lol Alioban xx
Thanks for a fascinating video. Loved it. Wishing you all the best with the bees.👍
Loved this! I have always loved and protected our local bees. We plant flower and native plants which the bees and hummingbirds love. Our yellow bells even attract generational bumbles (big big bees). Keep up the great work. We need our bees! 💞 Tx🇺🇲
That is awesome!
Really neat to see! And for negative nellies who leave nasty comments: beeeehave!! 😬
grand job lads! ...cant wait for the 1st honey tasting! 🐝🐝🐝🐝👍
Can tell Colin is just loving that he's FINALY got his bees. Love the Beehive's. We need all the bees that we can get.
Thumbs up to you both. 👍👍
🐝 Colin.. you have ( I’ll 🐝polite 😀) A LOT of GUTS getting that close. Well done.. I’m sure your heart was racing, mine was.
🤗❤️
Fantastic vlog love how you explained how to put a hive together, hope the bees do well.xx
Awesome Video, Gentlemen!!!
