    This happens to me once or twice a year. Interestingly, after I stopped doing yoga, it hasn't happened. So I think because I have poor lower back mobility, the yoga was irritating my nerves. Anyway, when my back goes out, I've tried doing nothing and also tried doing my regular yoga/Pilates/ weight training. It doesn't seem to make much difference. It just takes about a week to 10 days to heal on its own schedule no matter what I do.

    Yeah
    This happens to me like once a year and it’s traumatic for several reasons:
    I don’t want back surgery, which I see as 6 on one side and a half a dozen on the other regarding effectiveness
    My family is used to me being productive and basically isn’t sympathetic
    Basically not having this happen is WAY up in my self reliant list of priorities
    So I appreciate this video as it feels true to my conditions for pain and recuperation, etc..
    I’m nearly 60 but this has been a thing for decades if I think about it!
    The first time it happened my mind said,
    “I think I tore a muscle and somehow I need to stretch and relax these areas of tension as a preventative “
    However, almost all people jump to the
    “Oh yeah, back surgery”
    Line of conversation…
    I had a torn knee that is now ok (touch wood) and everyone was telling me to get surgery then
    I had a torn Achilles, same story
    I’m hoping to sort of fix this
    This time around my recuperation seems quicker, and I suspect it’s because of certain exercises that stretch out and strengthen those areas.
    Anyway, I’m calling myself Lazarus lately, but this is my new channel ❤️

The pain is also much worse when lifting anything. I feel almost zero back pain when sitting or laying down. Hey! No, don’t stop exercising unless those things specifically hurt you worse, otherwise they’re not harmful. Generally speaking try these things:
      1. Prone press ups in comfortable range (on stomach, press your chest up to arch your back…you don’t have to straighten your arms all the way). 15 reps 3x/day including before bed
      2. Avoid sleeping in the fetal position. Bring the knees down if you’re a side sleeper
      3. Car. Lean the seat back as far as you can and still reach the wheel. Sit on a pillow to be taller and smaller pillow behind the back
      4. Last, try the video below. It’s what I do for my back issues.
      Hope that helps!!

    Thank you so much! I have watched so many videos on back pain and none of them was what I'm experiencing. I leaned over too far when I stood up from the toilet and a knife pain shot through my lower left back through my front of my body. For a week I was unable to stand without pain, resulting in screams and tears. I started arching my back and keeping my neck parallel with the floor helped, but the pain sneaks back on a tiny wrong movement. I couldn't find one video that offered the best help save yours. I did notice walking helps and now I know to continue it. How long does this talk to heal? It's been a week for me and I'm still so terrified of sitting/standing, even though I managed to avoid the stabbing pain.

    • @robdrenningpt
      @robdrenningpt  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Great question! There are several possibilities. The most common is what’s called the facet joints in your back. They’re supposed to slide back and forth. Sometimes they stop doing this and jam together instead. There are little nerves in there that then cause the sharp, ice-pick type of pain. Then your brain tightens up all the muscles around, and any slight movement becomes very painful!
      Yes very scary! Happened to me too. Does that make sense?

      @@robdrenningpt Thanks for your reply...so I actually done complete bed rest up until today... I basically had no option. I was too sore to even visit my GP but spoke with him on the phone. I used heat on my back and started doing really mild stretching in my bed. I woke up this morning and to my amazement I was pain free. Tentatively took a few steps and I'm able to walk but cautiously. Such a terrifying experience.. In think I'm hopefully on the mend. My GP had a good insight in to back pain as he had surgery on both discs. I'm 43...and he suggested giving up running and weight lifting...suggesting that the wear and tear on my back has made it too vulnerable to injury. He suggested swimming, cycling, walking and yoga/pilates. What do you think? I'm thinking I will go with his advice as this experience has been terrifying. Thank you for your great videos...got me through a tough time while bed bound 👍

      @robdrenningpt  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Those activities suggested by your GP are great! And glad you’re feeling better!
      I’ve been there myself, it IS scary. Avoiding running/lifting for now is a good idea. It allows time for full healing and regaining mobility.
      However, in the long term I don’t really agree. There’s research out there showing repeated disc loading (aka running) actually INCREASES disc strength! More of wear and repair vs tear! It takes a while to gradually get back into it, but I run now and encourage my patients to do the same. If you do the activities your GP suggested with gradual return to strength/loading…you should be able to run too!

    • @mic8026
      @mic8026 Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for your reply.... really appreciate it. That sounds like a good idea. Three days back i think my disc herniated again. I had suffered disc herniation earlier 3 years back at L4-L5 and it took almost a year to heal. This is possibly because I went to a physio in almost no pain and he stretched my legs so much that i almost stepped out of his clinic crippled. Now this suspected herniation wasnt very painful and thankfully no sciatica. I have been moving, going to office, standing and working, all good till then, went out to enjoy christmas celebration and took a taxi back home and I was getting out of the taxi, baaam ! Something snapped and my lower back was completely jammed....today 1 day later i am in excruciating pain, gets worse lying down and getting out of bad takes 15 min but once i am up, i can walk around my home and that seems to give me some confort. I just feel lying down is makes me worse. My GP prescribed some anti inflammatory medication. Any thoughts on what i should do?

    • @robdrenningpt
      @robdrenningpt  Před 7 měsíci

      Dang sorry to hear this.
      1. Move and walk as much as possible
      2. Before getting up from lying down, rock the knees side to side on your back. Do any kind of motion possible prior to getting up. This will move fluid around your discs and create space needed to stand up
      3. Lying on your stomach, pressed up on your forearms if comfortable. You could even have someone gently pull your legs for traction in this position as well
      4. Keep good back support when sitting
      Again, these are general suggestions that may help, hard to give specific advice in this format but I hope this can help!

The pain is not a sign that something is being damaged. BUT…getting into a position that’s pain free is also good. Simply because it hurts less, which means improved mobility etc. Think of it as it’s OK to push to pain, but not through. Kind of grey I know but hopefully that makes sense! Lmk if not

If you can do that, work should be doable, depending on what type of job you have. I did it once and then had to move an entire apartment the next day. I used an ACE wrap as a brace and was able to get it done. You could try that if you have a physical job. If you sit a lot, keep support behind your back and move/walk around as much as you can. Yes, of course there can actually be something wrong with the back! However, statically we know that MOST of the time this isn’t the case. There’s been a bit of research on this

    I just threw my back out last night getting off the bed. It is so bad. Standing up, sitting down, and reaching it all causes horrible stabbing pain. I keep getting stuck because it's so painful, I have scoliosis, can I see a chiropractor? I'm only 31. I can't move my pelvis without getting the stabbing nerve pain.

      Sorry to hear! Yes, you can see a chiro or a good PT (you don’t need a referral in most states, you can just walk in). Here’s a guide that may help! Let me know how it goes

    What if no one is present to help get you up? I want to get up, I need to pee and I’m hungry 😂

      Tough one! From a bed, you have to do what’s called a log roll. That’ll have to be another video, hard to explain in text
      From a chair, you have to keep your trunk upright, scoot to the front of the seat, tuck your feet under and go for it! Use hands to push if you can!
