  • When I threw my own back out years ago, I was stuck on the floor for 20 minutes. I hear this from patients all the time as well! Usually when the back pain hits, the only thing you can do is get down to the floor.
Ok..fine. But then you try to get up and nothing works! The pain is too sharp, too severe. Well, here's how to do it! If you do have pain during the process, don't worry! Nothing will be further damaged, so do your best to get through it! I know it sucks, but you can do it!
Let me know how it goes!

Going through this sciatica for the 4th time in 12 years... I'm becoming an expert. Two bits of advice: 1) when you're on the stomach and are going to do the push up: get your hands back close to your belly button (but not that far).... it's easier to push yourself up to your hands and knees. 2) Once on hands and knees, walk to a chair, or coffee table to help to get up to standing. Trying to stand without a hand brace on table or chair is REALLY asking for trouble.

I'm in the hospital now, I didn't have the core strength to do it and it was the worst it has ever been.

Also, to assist in resolving sciatica: avoid sitting in chairs... in might feel OK while you're sitting, but you'll discover when you stand that you've set yourself back. If you have to sit, sit on the edge of the seat; straight back; and get your bad leg under the seat as much as possible (least amount of bend at the hip).

What do you mean exactly by „hurting“ ? I managed to do without problems. The question is if it still stresses the lumber spine or not ? Is it the safest way to come up without stressing the spine ? Or does it still stress it ?

Minimal stress on the low back, it is the easiest way to get up!

I scoot on my butt and back up to a sofa or cushioned chair, raise my arms behind me onto the sofa/chair and use my arms and feet to raise my butt onto the sofa/chair.
