Crystalis is one of those games that desperately needs a modern remake. Even having something as simple as being able to switch swords without having to enter the pause menu would be such a vast improvement to the game. And having all the swords be relevant throughout the entire game is something you just don't see in action RPGs, usually once you upgrade you forget about your old weapons.

I can imagine just having the swords assigned to your D pad or left stick to cycle through would make the game far less tedious to play. Several of the items could just be made passive gear and not need be selected to cycle on and off. A few quality of life tweaks could make this game far more enjoyable to play.

The warrior's ring may seem useless with access to the Power Ring, but if you haven't maxed out to level 16, it does make grinding out the last level with the Thunder Sword a lot safer and a lot easier. It's also a viable method for getting through the tower without relying on Level 3 Thunder. As long as you keep mashing the attack button, none of the robots will ever get close enough to hit you with their projectiles.
...Also, I love the trick to skipping the Stom duel. Should be noted that the first couple attempts are intentionally stacked against you, and you can't win even with a NES Advantage. But after 3 times or more, Stom will let up and he'll be easier to beat. I think the intention was to make the player believe they needed to grind a couple more levels before moving on.
...The funny thing, is when I encounter the poison swamp and the ohm boss for the first time, but also starting in Leaf, a 'windy valley,' it made me wonder if these were an homage to Nausicaa, or if SNK had originally considered getting the licensing rights and then abandoned the idea.

@@the_kombinator Yeah, I'm just playing a lot of retro games lately. It's interesting which ones you can just play straight through, and which ones have really challenging secrets and hidden items or areas. A game like Ninja Gaiden is really straightforward, but a game like Metroid even though it has somewhat similar 2D action gameplay mechanics is a crazy puzzle. Sometimes I just don't have it in me to do all the extra work when I just want to play and not be stuck in a game or have to look stuff up or use some kind of guide and all that.

Around the summer of 95, the battery in my Crystalis cart stopped working so I called Nintendo support. They had me ship the cart in for a battery replacement (no charge). While they still had the cart, they called me up and stated "We noticed quite a bit of corrosion on your cart and would like to offer to clean up any other carts you may have. Also send in your console/controllers too...free of charge". I was floored at the offer. I ended up sending them close to 100 carts, my console, all my controllers. They returned all the carts (which had been re-shelled, the stickers replaced) and brand new console and controllers. Outside of shipping, there was no out of pocket expense. Probably the best customer support experience of my entire life. Can you imagine any company going out of their way like that for a 10 year old product today?

I never interpreted the Tower as being the cause of the apocalypse in this game, but as the result of it. The opening narration suggests the Tower was designed not as a superweapon but as a fail safe to prevent another such war. If humanity ever moved down the path of evil again, the Tower would be there to pass judgment and wipe them out forever, so Mesiah and the Hero weren't trying to destroy the world but save it from destruction again. At first it seems that Draygon wants to use Mesiah in order to twist the tower into a weapon, but later we learn that it was Azteca, whose programming went awry, causing him to deem humanity unworthy of existence. Thus, he activated the Tower, abducted Mesiah, and misled the Hero and Wise Men in order to sow confusion while he achieved his ultimate goal. This was always how I read the story, at least, though your version is an interesting take too.
