    I guess there's something to be said for abject poverty, eh? Ha ha... I mean, when I make a gear purchase, I have to be pretty goddamn sure that piece of gear is solving multiple problems to even justify its purchase.
    I can honestly say, though, having to live with a rig that mostly stays unchanged for years at a time has taught me to be more creative with my space, mic choice and placement, and source sounds.

    Oh, man. Yeah. And it's not just hardware, either. Stock DAW plugins work fine and if you had the right mindset could keep you from being dumb and collecting all the plugins out there, but now even those have built in versions of all the same "must have" EQs and compressors, so the analysis paralysis problem is unstoppable. They don't want to let you keep it simple.
    I got a $40 tascam HDD 8 track about a year ago because of that. It has one effects send and nothing on board but a basic 2 band shelving EQ. I can export over USB 1.0 if I absolutely have to, or decide something's worth polishing up in a DAW.
