    There’s a time and a place for TV Dinners…

Remember when Roland came out with that modeling mic pre about 20 years ago? Didn't catch on, really, but a few years later we saw the concept pushed in plugins. I dunno, the idea of a really flat mic with some EQ presets to approximate various mics is just marketing. Your point about how in 3 years this is gonna be pushed away for the new version is right on the money. If this is so good, why would they need an update? EQ profiles they can get right the first time.
If I can't get a decent sound out of my modded shanghai specials, lord only knows how one of these things is gonna help me.

People used that Focusrite Liquid preamp forever… people might even still. But of even the most modest preamps available in that device, which was the better long term investment? But look for almost any example of a 20 year old digital modeling device that required proprietary software to operate, that is still around?
Not quite the same, but a Tascam UH7000 was a really great sounding preamp with really nice sounding convertors… but because the required software was so clunky and poorly supported… instead of being a classic bang for buck icon… it’s relegated to not worth the trouble… or the money.
      It’s obsolete. Essentially… Despite being 98% killer.
