The only issue with using old tech like phones, tablets, or even computers is that if the software isn't being updated anymore, you really shouldn't connect them to the internet. Unpatched security holes can cause all kinds of issues, not only for yourself, but also other people.

    • @_Digitalguy

The biggest issue is that modern software is so bloated, technically we wouldn't need more RAM or processing power on our phones (messaging, some Instagram/Facebook, taking a few pictures were all fine 10 years ago). Devs just don't optimize their stuff anymore or fill it with unnecessary crap. I remember 10 years ago apps were usually 5-15mb big when downloading from the Play Store, now most apps are atleast 80-100mb

I still use my iPhone 5c every day as an offline podcast device. because the OS doesn't update it means that the podcast app doesn't update either, and it's the most recent version that still has the playlist function (I have no idea what moron thought it was a good idea to remove playlists from a podcast app!).
I need to replace the headphone jack (it cuts out at the slightest of movements) and the screen (it's cracked at the top, but not in any way that affects usability) but they are both fairly easy fixes.

Works fine, good battery life - and it’s only used as a phone. Hi-fi? Ranges in age from 55 yrs old (turntable) through 40 yrs old (CD player) to 25-30 yrs old - amp and speakers. All work great, with minimal maintenance required. TV - 25 yrs old - works fine. All of this stuff I keep using because it’s really well built (some of the hi fi gear is ridiculously over engineered), and I see absolutely no need to upgrade any of it. I have to use more modern stuff for work - and without exception, all of it has been overly complicated and unreliable. My work laptop has been back with the manufacturer for over a year with an unknown fault they keep failing to fix, and my work smartphone (a Samsung) makes a great paperweight, but a useless smart phone.

There’s no ability to use it without an internet connection .. absolute madness as it’s just a speaker connected via a cable. There is no physical reset button on the device, the plug is hardwired to the back of the device, it won’t reconnect and the only option is to unplug it.. and the plug is behind a built in outlet that I’ll need to disassemble to get into it. Sonos have automatically been removed from my list of companies I’d purchase from ever again because if they ever go out of business or drop support for devices you can no longer use.. a wired speaker. The oldest piece of tech I use is my keyboard on my home desk setup, I use an IBM Model M13 buckling spring keyboard manufactured in 1998, although the Model Ms actually go back much older than that to the mid 1980s. It's amazing to type on and is by far my favourite keyboard I own. It works perfectly on any modern PC or Mac just as long as you get an active PS/2 to USB adapter which I have. Currently typing this comment on it using an Apple Silicon Mac and it works great. It lacks a Windows key, so you do have to change the modifier keys in macOS to make it work but that's easy to do and tbh it's worth it for the excellent typing feel the buckling springs provide.
I have a few other older things in my setup, I use a pair of Logitech 2.1 speakers that are about 20 or so years old that still work great, as well as a Sony video camera I use for my own CZcams videos I've owned for almost 10 years that still looks, sounds and functions perfectly as if it were brand new. My rule is that I'll only replace something if it breaks or is somehow no longer compatible anymore.

I went and bought a used set of Audeze Penrose headphones last summer. Knew that the battery would eventually be poo poo, but the deal was just too good to pass on. That and I'd JUST gotten into planar magnetic videos on CZcams 🤫 lol. Anywho, earlier this year i hit up their customer support to see what (if anything) could be done to revive these to their former heights of glory. They told me there's nothing they could do as the company (cuz they were well beyond their warranty period).... Buttttttt, the kind man on the phone explained how easy it would be to do a replacement, told me details about the battery, and told me how the part would be easy to find on AliExpress.
Just thought I'd share so that folks can be aware that companies sometimes actually do think about us folks who plan to use their products for quite some time. And Audeze (at least prior to the Sony deal) was one of them.

Old tech is also more repairable most of the time. Even when it comes to Apple, Macs used to have easily swappable batteries and modular RAM and storage.
It’s a shame modern tech doesn’t have that anymore and most of the time is made cheaply, so long-term longevity is not great

Mac os 9.0.4 never lets me down, Tiger Shuriken 10.4.12 is also strong. New things break before the older ones. My solder OC mac mini G4 seem to never dye. Hopefully there are people at Canon that enable both printing from appletalk and Airprint, so you get printing from 8.5.1 (1998) to iphone 15 on the same device at seconds of interval. Just a pun to explan that support is possible, if we want. I agree on this keyboard, as long as you like cleaning it. Never try to repair something that is not broken. Most updates or upgrades are a risk and a pain. Like wwhen apple removes php from mac os ... I sarted on windows after Mojave. Windows is quite good once debloated.
