- A cane for balance while recovering from a knee replacement surgery is usually needed to make sure you are safe when moving in your home and in the community.
Right after surgery, you might have needed a walker or crutches. But as you gain better balance and strength, using a cane is more appropriate.

Thank you for sharing tips in using cane
Thank you Dr. David,
I sent this video link to my oldest sister who had knee surgery and is having PT at home. Your videos always cover so much information and I'm grateful to you for them & share them with everyone I know & meet that are dealing with orthopedic pain.
God bless you ❣
I was born with Acute Intermittent Hepatic Porphyria and it effects my central nervous system & my legs sometimes don't get the message to move, so I use a cane so I don't fall.
I never know which leg will be effected & I've had double wrist surgery in 2005, and it hurts to push & pull with either of them. I did get full range of motion which surprised the surgeon, I'm not a quitter, 8hrs of PT a day with PT instructions on everything that would help followed to the letter. I did have to force free the scar tissue that formed on my left wrist, I'm so glad it worked and yes it was painfull, but it assured me I'd have full range of my wrists 👍🙆♀️❣
Thank you again and keepup thte great videos 👍
Thanks for the tips. Knee replacement next year, trying to prepare by getting stronger. Also you're right about turning feet outward on bike. Makes my glutes fire. And I would have used the cane on the wrong side. Glad to be a subscriber ❤
Thanks!
You are very welcome Isolda! We really appreciate your overwhelming support!
Best by far is to use elbow brace crutches since 200% more stable than hand crutches and 200% more comfortable than armpitters
Hello you have helped me a lot, next coffee on me! Now I need to fix a "pain" on my leg _ i am sure it is my femoral nerve _ for years and getting worse. Help Dr! Help!
Send me the link in case you have covered it already. Thx
at your video at 3:50 - is she using the cane incorrectly?
Need some more on hip like trapped nerve and GTPS to strengthen the buttocks-cheeks and reducing pain I think mine comes from a long back pain problem that travelled now onto my hips and down my legs.
What exercises would be good and safe for me to do?
Kind regards
Elke
Hey Elke, so sorry to hear about your trapped nerve and GTPS :-(
