a video on 'setting up a new smart home around matter' would be appreciated. Thanks.
OTA update support in Matter (and Thread) are a big advantage. That is one of the few reasons to start manufacturer specific apps.
I think this is the most balanced review of the current state of Matter I have seen since the official launch a few days ago. Thanks for that! For example, it is one hell of an accomplishment to bring so many large companies together and get them to agree to vision, strategy, and tactics for moving this forward. Thinking of the corporate egos involved, the largest of whom typically only see each other in a courtroom, this is one massive accomplishment.
That said, your caution of approaching the process (especially the beginning) as a journey which will not always progress without bumps, is sagacious. I’m sure we’re all missing a key device category from the limited set of categories right now. But, given their plans for biannual updates (with category updates apparently possible BETWEEN biannual updates), I would imagine that we’ll have plenty to keep us busy between updates so that most of our category will be available within 18 months.
Lingering problems that I see right now: I hate that hubs are still a big part of some device manufacturers plans, the interplay between devices is still unknown, and how quickly will Apple’s new Home infrastructure enable better use of Matter. It might be just me, but Phillips comes across as though their hub will forever be a required part of your financial hit to use their products. Aqara, on the other hand, seems ready to first enable backwards compatibility via hub updates that eventually give way to devices with. After which do not require a hub. I wonder if this means that Aqara hubs updated to support Matter will become part of your Thread network by becoming a Thread router. The older accessories will certainly be limited to Zigbee, but expanding the range of the Aqara hubs via Thread’s network will be awesome.
Im still shocked that all these big companies are ok with matter, I feel like google and amazon are going to lose the most since a lot of people will switch to homekit
He explains in the video. matter/thread are interchangeable across platforms.
Apple home kit is terrible. People will swap to far better kits now
@@tchesnokovn yea but im saying theres a lot of apple users that have a lot of google/amazon devices because they are usually cheaper and more common than homekit things that would switch off google/alexa
@@micci123456789 I think once more people switch to home kit it will improve, google or alexa has the advantage as now now i though, apple users do love staying in the apple eco system too
@@fatguy9 they love inferior tech
The one downside that I see is ... I really like hubs. They offer me the most stable and reliable communication with my devices. All the problems I've ever had were only with "hubless" (i.e. wifi) devices.
That’s why you want a unified standard. Like Bluetooth and WiFi work well with smartphones, desktops and routers etc :)
I'm also trying to avoid hubs as much as I can. I have a Eufy hub that works with my HomeKit and a Ring hub that does not.
I'm looking forward to the hardware companies going to Mater. I'm a bit worried that the new Eufy cameras did not come with HomeKit support.
Also a big Eufy fan, but am still buying the older version of the cameras to get the HomeKit support.
I have still no clue what this means for my setup. Apple Homekit, Hue bulbs, Fritz Thermostats, integrated with Homebridge on a RaspberryPi.
Thanks for the update. Miss seeing the videos.
Thank you for watching
Nice, I can start considering IoT devices now. Matter only, and probably on a local network
I see ADT on the graphics with partnered brands. Does it mean it is likely that a professional security system is coming to HK?
I really loved how the video explains so well about matter and how it works.
But can EXISTING PRE MATTER devices be Matter compatible?
I only use HK so I don’t even buy products that aren’t HK compatible so 🤷🏾♀️. I don’t trust Alexa or Ring so I’m not going to start using them because of this update but this’ll be good for those who do.
So, for those looking to start making their home a smart home, would you recommend holding off a couple of months to see what comes out with the Matter release?
Yes
Yep.
So what are Philips Hue saying about Zigbee and their bridge hub? Will Zigbee be phased out or made compatible with Thread?
I use Apple HomeKit but also have a Nest thermostat in the house. In order to control the Nest I need to use Homebridge. Does Matter mean that the Nest could show up in the Apple Home app without the need for Homebridge anymore?
Google stated that the Nest Thermostat (the one with the mirror-like display” will support Matter. I’m assuming that the Nest Thermostat will eventually appear in the Home App on HomeKit soon.
My current Eero is jacking up prices in Nov which is making me want to get a different new router. Does it make sense for me to wait for a Matter router or just move forward with a good router w/ home kit built in? Thoughts?
Okay so is Matter something that existing products can adopt via software update? Or does this require new hardware and only accessible for new products going forward?
5:30 Should always watch the video before asking questions he’s already answered.
@@jaydenbaldwin3437 But that is also just a half answer. Because reality is more complicated. Yes SOME devices which have the requirement CAN do a software update to matter. But it also depend which part of matter, the translation layer like the hubs can adapt or to adopt thread the low power protocoll. As thread is more complicaded situation with requirements that previous generation protocol has not had, TPM requirements, RAM, storage etc. Many existing bulbs, dimmers, etc will probablt never get matter directly through thread, but may do it through their hub instead. They may release thread versions or say fuck it we already have a ecosystem to support and do matter through the hub.
We already see thread devices (which is part of matter standard)....which the makers have said lack requirements to direct matter integration.....yeah, not even launced and things are already complicated.
electronic retailers, need to learn about smart homes as I’ve been into several different ones and none of the staff know anything about it
What about backwards compatibility? Especially for family members (or room mates) who have older devices not running ios16: what can they keep doing and what can’t they do anymore if we upgrade to matter? What happens if one person has one newer device and one older device?
Everyone rushing to buy latest IoT gadgets only to be told later their hardware won’t support matter.
I was interested in buying the Schlage encode plus with Apple HomeKey until Schlage announced it won’t support matter.
Expect massive discounts on the Schlage encode Plus in the coming months.
Also, why do I feel like there will be subscription services unveiled for tiered access
I just want to stop 3rd party hubs from collecting my data…. Looking forward to this
When can we expect homekit garage door openers to be compatible with Matter & Thread?
…and which brands will be offering thread garage door openers?
No sign of Matter garage door opener yet, sorry 🙁
why you need a Garage door opener to be compatible with matter and Thread?
So should we get an update with our smart bulbs to be able to work with matter?
I want to connect Matter device to the Apple homekit, but I do not find a guide to connect.
Please share with me any information about this. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing
does this mean i have to rebuy my hue bulbs, nest thermostat and etc
Does that mean nest devices will work with Apple HomeKit ?
Will it show up in my home app?
So it's worth sticking with Homebridge then?
I’d like to control my nest thermostat with HomeKit. Do away with multiple apps.
Even with it installed it’s not recognizing my ecobee or a19 lights.
The companies need to update there products
i just want my ring devices on matter and homekit
Homebridge?
Where is the matter video door bell! I’m sick of the Logitech and belkin!
dude really had no audio in his intro, thought my headphones broke
Have I been pronouncing Schlage wrong this whole time 🙈
Finally a video!
honestly I already use Homekit and GoogleHome with the same devices… as Aqara devices, associated with homekit but through the Aqara cloud they can also be added to GoogleHome. Same thing for PHILIPS HUE devices, usable with Homekit and GoogleHome at the same time (also Alexa shold be used at the same times with them). You just have to decide whether to call Siri, Google or Alexa.
…so i think you said something wrong at 1:37.
280 members will use the same standard but everyone will count on using their own cloud and reference service (data cloud it is too profitable for these companies and they will not let you make everything work locally). For me Matter is just one more reason to buy new devices and that's it. Soon we will see the market fill up with new connMatter compatible devices (Ikea was among the first with its new double-priced hub). If I am not mistaken for now only Philips has declared to upgrade its hub to Matter without problems (but Philips has its huge market and does not need any new youth)
With matter it all works locally, no need for cloud services to make it work. That means you don’t have to share data wjth anyone
@@HomeKitAuthority No manufacturer will allow you to work alone locally for all brands that will have compatibility with Google and Alexa. It will be possible but they will not allow it. They will be new devices but that we will use in the same way as the previous ones with a higher cost. Nobody will update their devices (except as stated by Philips and its hub).
And i'm not going to buy new equipment because of matter 1.0.
Matter vs Hubitat?
Well, goes to show folks --- "Universal" in USB was never a truthful statement.
Reliable ?! For me it’s more about not beeing fucked when a Chinese el’chespo company folds and I’m left with a disfunctional device
ℹ️
Say *H*elp and *H*ome 😅
But homebridge already has this 😂
Casambi is better
SONOFF M5 wall switch works with Matter! 🎉

dont listen then, very simple
Android for me, I don't want to lockdown to Apple forever
Every platform is attempting to lock users into their platform/ecosystem. Apple is just more successful at it.
Before I'm accused of being an Apple fanboy, I haven't had an iPhone since the 3g and unless some relatively large changes happen within iOS and the iPhone hardware (looking at you, Lightning Port) I will continue to use Android phones even though an iPhone would be a huge convenience bump for me personally because I use a MacBook Pro for work and most of my friends/family have iPhones/iPads.
Let's not be corporate simps one way or the other. They're all evil. They all just want your money/data(to sell for money).
So…….lock yourself down in Android forever? 😂
@@gregg5958 Apple don't make Android phones 🤣😂
@@Max86421 Wooosh…..the sound of my point sailing right over your head.
Yawn
Thanks
@@HomeKitAuthority the video quality was good as always but, not at all excited about this "technology"
@@Alamo-cz5xc Why would’t you be interested in things working together?
@@gregg5958 because of "Thread" etc, its just more marketing bullshit. Another solution looking for a problem
@@Alamo-cz5xc No it’s not. 🙄 It’s pushing manufacturers to deliver more. Have you not seen the massive changes that Google is making?
It never made sense to me why my Ring doorbell doesn’t integrate with my Google Nest Hub (completely), or why it can’t integrate with my HomeKit without a hub. Matter is long overdue.
Is Matter out??
