    This is some quality video. Really knowledgeable channel. Someone sponsor this bloke and get him going on big stuff. But take that shelf down or he'll lose too many brain cells.

    Hey mate, i have just finished converting my na to turbo running gear.
    All I can say is I wish I seen your videos 12 months ago! 😅
    Very very informative in-depth videos by a level headed sensible fella, even though I have finished the conversion I still watched all your na.t conversion videos and appreciate the time and effort in documenting while building !
    It's a shame you didn't continue creating content related to the xr (mods/tune and review and maybe getting around to putting a set of rods and pistons in it)
    Possible revival ??

      Thanks for the kind words mate! how is yours all running? To give an update on the car quiet a lot has happened since these videos were filmed. I converted it to a 6 speed manual and its now running just shy of 350rwkw on 14psi.
      I found that by the time i was doing those mods to the car youtube had become so saturated with 1000hp barra builds that it seemed there was little desire for content like mine anymore where as when i started there was very little content on conversions. I haven't really got any car projects going at the moment but if i end up doing anything unique again that i feel will help people if i upload it'll appear!

    10:07 or you can use rope and turn the crank so the piston pushes the rope against the valves to hold them, it worked well on my Honda B series

    Excellent presentation however using the old timing chain and guides is not prudent. In fact given the condition of the ports I would have removed the cylinder head and taken it in for a service and crack test, installing a new head gasket. Second hand Cams are not going to mate up with the lifters so lots of things going on here!

    • @stuff7853
      @stuff7853  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment. I agree reusing chains and guides is not the best practice however i've seen barra's with over 800,000ks on them still running the original chain and guides and they have been fine. These ones had so little wear you couldn't even catch your nail in the groove, on a high power high dollar build however i would strongly advise against it. As for the cylinder head and cams. In the video uploaded after this one the entire engine was stripped down and taken to a machine shop before i rebuilt it. Barra cams run on rollers that actuate the valves. Theres nothing wrong with running second hand cams in these engines at all as the cams never mate to the lifters as they would in an engine where the lifters ride directly on the cam such as in many pushrod v8's.

    Awesome video man I'm building a ba up aswell its actually in really good condition. I'm doing pump gears valve spring and headstuds. Would you recommend doing pistons and rods etc if ya only chasing 300kw or so I have been told the ba have a weak rod

    • @stuff7853
      @stuff7853  Před 3 lety +1

      Ba's have weak rods but 300kw is safe with them with the correct supporting mods and a good tune. They can take a little more then that even, from what im told below 350kw is ok. But if you have the spare money rods is a good idea so you have a more durable engine that can handle abuse better. You have to factor into the cost getting the rotating assembly balanced if you change the rods though. Stock pistons are fine with 300kw. I didn't show it in the video but one of the pistons in this engine was damaged from foreign matter in the engine. I bought a new one from ford and it was the exact some part number ba-fg. I got lucky and it weighed exactly the same as the old one so i got away with just putting it in.

      @@ryanhughes7178 I often wish i had have done it with mine just for the peace of mind. But with the limitations of the btr i decided it wasn't really worth it because i never plan to take the car to that next level of power

    • @plumbs7199
      @plumbs7199 Před 2 lety

      With Btr’s you just have to make them shift harder . You can do this via pcmtech and the s5 global temps . Try -200 oil temps in all of the fields . Also can turn the s 5 solenoid torx screw in a full turn or more and will do the same thing .

    Why is No1 piston brand new ? I also do not see a 0 on the No 1 Exhaust valve that looks suspect .

    • @stuff7853
      @stuff7853  Před 2 lety

      number 6* good spot. The engine had ingested something and pitted the top of that piston. It was minimal and i probably could have ran it but my parts guy at ford sourced me a new genuine one for cheap. I weight matched it to the original and installed it just to be safe. The other 5 all measured well within tolerance and had no damage. Valve did have an 0 stamped on it, just covered in crud. Machine shop took care of that.

    just wanted to know if anyone ran into the same problems.
