Are You A Fan Of Alternate History Stories?
it's one of my favorite genres, particularly in science fiction. When done well it gives an interesting perspective on how close that alternate history came to being.
To me looks like Jeff Smith's RASL or Steven Grant's The Rook, but less interesting, more weighted for metanarrative like how The Boys has Frenchie and the Japanese chick as surrogates to go through those nations "position" next to US comics.
The trouble is with this alterantive history stuff, is the heavy dogmatizing ALREADY of your average, "normal" history. Superhero comic is only big in their distribution, conceptually they're SO insignificant, and competing with having the US shelves, publishers, all to themselves. The printing is mostly from advertising budget, so they're sold like flyers, and mooks buy them.
They invent so very little. What little UK artists have been allowed to bring past the iron curtain is usually ripoff, from Hugo Pratt, moebius, Osamu Tezuka, Mauricio de Sousa, Hector Oesterfeld. A lot of stuff from the 60's, reads just like Watchmen, but never published in USA. Or, "outside socialist influence" during McCarthyism.
Yes. They're like Marvel What Ifs but based on real persons and events. Except the stories are not always used to justify what actually happened, lol!
yes they are good lessons on what future we should avoid or why we shouldn't change the past
I'm so much of a fan, I'm writing one lol
1:23 "It also heavily features magic. Side note: I'm not American, but Canadian ..." I thought Sasha was about to reveal to us that Canadians practice magic.
She isn’t allowed to do that, it’s supposed to stay a secret until the big ritual is completed.
@@davidgantenbein9362it all makes sense now
That reminds me of something I read a while ago. I don't remember the exact quote but it was something along the lines of "Canadians are so nice because once a year, they gather together and perform a magical ritual that pours all of their malice into their geese."
I actually think all of the ghost machine titles have been some of the best reads of 2024
I've been having a lot of fun with them!
don't remember them that well, didn't hate them
Talking about a Red Coat the day before the 4th of July Sasha… how Canadian of you lol
July 1st was actually Canada Day
Interestingly, in Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, he had written that the immortal Hob Gadling had spent the first century or two poor and just wandering around. And then over the next several centuries gaining wealth, losing it, and then gaining it back again.
Loving the Ghost Machine books so far. I'm going to be very impressed if Hitch can keep up the pace like he says he plans to. It feels like he's had trouble doing so when working for the Big 2.
Simon Pure what an ironic name! He sounds like Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood and Doctor Who.
Simon reminds me of John Constantine meets Booster Gold, which is why Red Coat is my most anticipated Ghost Machine series
I also got John Constantine vibes.
Who he really reminds me of is jack from fables, like there similarities are very much, from the immortality, to the luck go attitude, making enemies every where he goes.
Interesting name Pure. Back in the day, a person who collected 'pure' was busy finding and scraping up dog excrement - certainly during Victorian Britain, but I believe earlier too. It was to sell to tanneries.
I wouldn't have mentioned it, but this guy is from the C18th wearing his George III Lobster jacket, so his name could be a very different joke.
How puerile.
The name Simon Pure goes back to the early 1700's, and was a name from a play describing a Quaker who was exceptionally pious and 'upright'. it later became a term meaning someone was genuine or had high integrity, maybe too much so.
@@sboinkthelegday3892 I'll take that… and scatological! 😁
@@scottboswell6406 Fascinating.
I'd (obviously) never heard the term before and the only English plays I've seen written in the C18th are several film and TV versions of The Beggar's Opera and Tom Jones, and She Stoops to Conquer on stage. I was unaware of this one.
Now I've done the quick, light search (an extraordinarily long Wikipedia article for such an old play) and there's clearly a deep rabbit hole to go down here - with even Hogarth engravings. Great fun.
Thanks for letting me know where it actually originates. I can certainly see myself getting drawn deeper into the works of Susanna Centlivre (Freeman/Carroll).
I have been loving the new Ghost Machine Universe. Geiger has really been cleaned up and Redcoat and Rook Exodus have been such great reads.
I've never loved alternate history stories, but I did have an idea for a movie I wish existed. I want to see a prequel to Dracula following the life of Vlad Dracul, with Dracula trying to make him into a vampire as a child and Vlad's life from that point on being re-contextualized into a secret war against vampires. It could end with Dracula winning and taking on his name to mock Vlad's effort to stop him.
Why does that Redcoat guy give me vibes of Jack from the Fables comics ?
I love the Unnamed series so much! I'm glad it's getting attention!
I really liked Kireon Gillen's Uber. It's basically, what if Germany learned how to make Superman in World War 2."
Gillen is basically a historian so everything really works.
It was cancelled before the story's conclusion with no word on if it will ever finish.
I was wondering what happen. It stopped mid arc.
We know you're Canadian but we still love you anyway. 😁 As for Redcoat, it doesn't sound like my cup of tea but probably fun. It's something unique so that's a plus.
From the preview in Ghost Machine #1 he comes off a lot like Edward Kenway from AC4. I loved that game. Definitely going to check out more of this
Wow! Thanks for this vid! Great overview of Red Coat and the primer of the the Unnamed Universe. Had not heard of it before but a fan of Bryan Hitch and most of Geoff Johns' work, so I will check it out! 🤠👍
Wait...Sasha was Canadian this whole time?! What a twist!!🤯😉
I am intrigued. I think i will give this a look . thank you for this review.
I love stories of immortals living through history! "Highlander" was one of my favorite franchises! I also like the idea of Albert Einstein as the kid sidekick. Will he discover the magical equivalent of 'E=MC(squared)'?
Ghost Machine has been the highest quality line published so far in 2024; a level above even the highly successful Energon Universe books.
Hands down the best art in comics right now and Johns has come up with some terrific original concept, evidently putting in a lot of work to world build and create great characters. The quality of the writing is of the highest standard. DC and Marvel WISH they were still capable of making comics of this quality again.
Redcoat is excellent.
I've only read the first three comics (I missed the introductory ones in other publications) and I'm enjoying it. I'm not an American, so I probably miss a lot of the history jokes, but the humour works despite that.
The only thing that niggles is that the character and physical appearance of Simon Pure (Redcoat) could be interchangeable with John Constantine or Jack of Fables. I'm half expecting a crossover 'event' when Simon, John and Jack all appear in the same pane pointing at each other like Spider-Man.
Apart from that, I'm still interested enough to be buying more issues of the comic.
He does look a lot like Jack lol that's why he needs to keep the coat.
All the Ghost Machine books are better than anything DC and Marvel is putting out at this point in time.
Sure. Let's chat.
Simon Pure = Hal Jordan. Sometimes the fun is watching him run head on into a wall. I also see the "I deserved that" gag from Jack Sparrow, and he kind of fits in here, as well. Redcoat is on an issue-by-issue basis at this point; a couple of real stinkers and I will have to have it removed from my pull. Even so...
For me, the most entertaining thing has been in on the ground floor while someone is literally kick-starting their own universe. I do recall reading (and owning) the first issue of Daredevil, and I had a giant sized Dr. Strange that pulled together a lot of the Ditko stories. Being an adult (soon to be 65), I can see these stories as part of something that is growing, and this time I can be aware of seeing the sprouts of ideas pop through.
I do have a weird take on Redcoat, but mostly due to seeing The Northerner as someone we are going to be seeing later. Redcoats, of course, are The Bad Guys. So, why *wouldn't* I like seeing him running into a wall now and then?
btw: in the area I grew up, heading across the Ambassador or the Blue Water Bridges (or going through the Tunnel) and heading into Canada was common. (We didn't need passports then.)
Alternate histories can be fascinating, and I do enjoy some Turtledove. So, I may just keeping riding this for a while. I will also admit to being quite curious as to the other characters on the timeline... and Hyde Street... and The Rocketfellers...
Do carry on.
Redcoat: Dr Who if he dropped out & Young Sheldon
Red coat is actually my favorite for the selection ghost machine has so far. I love the alternative history and the idea of someone being immortal but not put together at all.
Thanks for the take. I just purchased issue #1 and overall enjoyed it. Seems like it will get pretty detailed. I appreciate the detail and alternate to the big two, Marvel and DC. Go, Simon!
As an American I think you Canadians are cool you gifted us with Many Pop Culture Icons & Ice Hockey here in the States
Glad to see you covering this! I’ve been picking up Geiger because the covers are so beautiful! I’ve seen a ton of copies of redcoat at my shop but I don’t really feel interested because white American history fiction is 9/10 cringe if not outright supremacist. It’s cool to see it doesn’t stay in the colonial period but I’m not totally sold still!
There are things that really interesting about this universe. How all of this stories conect in this timeline? What even is the Unknown War and what are the implications of It? This is one of the feel stuff to be excited about comics.
Love the rants.
I'm reading all the Ghost Machine books and have been enjoying them. After listening to you, I need to go read them again, because I certainly haven't got as much out of them as you've done here with Red Coat! At the moment I find him a bit of a cross between The Resurrection Man from DC and Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow, the history that the character is living through at the moment seems to run parallel with Ichabod in the TV Series, they certainly screwed around with it. I'm from the UK so don't know as much as I would like about the times it is set, but if it's not accurate it doesn't really affect me! Also I'm pretty old so if it goes on for as long as they're planning, I won't be around for the end anyway! Like I said I'm enjoying all this universe so far, I just hope the creators can keep up with the schedule they've set thereselves. Geoff Johns JSA 10 issues have taken 18 months so far, with two to come. If there are gaps in publication the interest will wain like with most things. Being there are at the moment plenty of good books to read (indie mostly) they will soon be forgotten.
The network screwed up the Sleepy Hollow series. It started out so good. Then its like they didn't know what to do after season 2.
@@blackrazer22 It was still better than a lot of stuff on at the time, but I do agree!
I'm all in on Ghost Machine and thr nameless universe!
Between that and the Energon Universe I've got tons of exciting content to keep me entertained and I feel sage in knowing that it will be consistent
Absolutely loving everything in this universe. Geiger, junkyard Joe and redcoat
I liked Geiger and Junkyard Joe and can't wait for Redcoat and the rest of the series. Let's see where they go with it.
Ghost universe is really nice right now. I think ROOK Exodus is the crown jewel of the line Geiger has been solid and red coats is OK but I definitely did think about dropping it over,Albert Einstein sidekick thing. I really think it’s kind of silly just to have an historic person being that role. Literally, it could’ve been anybody that would’ve probably done better to see that person grow because now you its weird expectations because of the historical factors.
It’s Geoff Johns. It will just never wrap up 😂
Red coat sounds intriguing
I'll check it out
Really enjoyed them so far 😊
Geoff Johns you say? Yes.
I'm enjoying Redcoat, not quite as much as Rook Exodus, but it also feels like a slower burn to a bigger story.
I really like the idea of adding magic to American history and mythology.
If I had more disposable income I’d definitely be picking up all the books. Right now though I’m concentrating on Geiger.
Sounds fun. Hope I get the chance to read it someday.
You've covered Rook and Red Coat, now let's hear what you think of the main title: Geiger. A reccomendation: one of the best uses of an actual historical figure in comics is Ben Franklin in Dr. Strange 16 and 17, the 1970s series. He seduces Clea, yes he does. It's a solid depiction
Sasha...how long have you known you were.............................Canadian?
(Dame Edna line)
I've liked the ideas of the Ghost Machine titles more than the actual execution, so far.
Redcoat ticks alot of boxes for me, so maybe I'll track it down.
If you can't trust a Canadian for comic book recommendations, then I don't know what this world's coming to.
I love the checkered pattern they put on the top of the comics! Very silver age DC I love that.
The name Simon Pure gives me light silver age vibes lol, not quite alliterated enough for full silver.
@@CasuallyComics Totally! Makes me think of Satdev from that story where Lois dates the "devil"
Haven’t read it but I really enjoy these forays into more Indy stuff
I'm not a fan of Bryan Hitch's current art style... but it looks a bit better than normal. I'm planning on waiting for the trade for most, if not all of the Ghost Machine books. I trust that they're solid, but it's a bit pricey to buy them all as they come out imo.
Excellent series i think ghost machine has some awesome books that give both ghost machine and skybounds energon universe run over the big two
I really like this channel.
I'm gonna have to check it out since it's free on Hoopla!
I've seen it but I haven't checked it out. Perhaps now I will.
The maple syrup drinker picks today to post a review of a bloody immortal lobster on the day of American Independence from the Crown?? 😂 great reviews, it does sound interesting 😊
Looooooove Ghost Machine, though Red Coat is my least favorite, but not bad by any means.
Please keep the Ghost Machine vids coming!
Wait a second! You've been Canadian this whole time?
Red Coat reminds me of the Soldier, from Astro City, but in a hot mess version. I imagine both are the Captain America archetype.
At least it's not Johnny Tremain.
Redcoat is by far my favorite Ghost Machine book it is very fun
I am loving the Unnamed Universe from Ghost Machine. I have been following it since Geiger was first released (tho Junkyard Joe was less than stellar). With Red Coat I like the supernatural interjection into American history as it makes the read more fun. It is funny that I am not liking the main character but that is/has been the way it's written. For me, I am following for the world building. Geiger and Rook are way better, but I'm not a fan of horror so the upcoming Hyde Street series doesn't interest me.
You're not a Thief of Joy, but you should consider saving that as your supervillain name.
I am a Marikin. 'Merika! Git r Dunn lol. Happy 4th of July, the birthday of the Be Nited States.
Canadian!!!! Wow.
I like Geiger and Rook but i dont care much for Redcoat.
Commenting for the algorithm
Algorithm punch!
That's good of you. The algorithm gets lonely sometimes and likes to be remembered. 🙂
Won't someone please think of the algorithm lol
I actually every interested in reading these comics
I'm all in on Redcoat as Simon is an entertaining piece of human garbage and I love all the alt-history and Americana details.
Wait, is this a new tattoo?
👍
Am excited for events just sick of art style changing with each issue
Geiger is the strongest book out of the gate but this? this has been dumb fun so far. Dude's basically Constantine mixed with Jack Harkness.
its a fun but light read. its perfect for Assassins creed fans.
I'm just reading X-men right now. Can't really afford to buy anything extra right now.
Lol, they just keep adding X books
@@CasuallyComics i know😂. Just going to read Uncanny X-Men and Storm.
I read the first three. I could nit-pick, but overall, I liked it. Nice art, especially the full-page and two-page panels. The characters seem a little tropey, but they're still fun and can be fleshed out and layered as we go. The story pace is a little slow, but it's the world-building phase, and there's enough movement and reveals to keep me interested. I'm okay with young Einstein, though his personality is more extroverted than I'd imagined the real person was. In any case, we need an Einstein to have a Geiger. Simon Pure: not deemed worthy, not appearing worthy, but...will he live up to his surname, or is it just a fun bit of irony? Time will tell. Speaking of time, I loved the Franklin quote from the book: "Lost time is never found." Wish I hadn't seen him nearly naked though.
Lol, yeah, I had to be careful with my panel selection cause of that.
I'm not feeling REDCOAT for he same reason I'm not feeling any of the Ghost Machine titles so far...namely they all have the Edgelord Into Adulthood Geoff Johns stank that taints any genuine storytelling that may be going on.
I hate Simon as a character which is done on purpose. I may drop this book if I find no one to root for.
I find it a bit annoying of how protective USA citizens are protective of their mythology/propaganda, so that anyone that will make a critical reading of said mythology needs to be extra careful not to step on their toes.
Wanting to have everyone retain control of the IPs they create, but also wanting to create collaborative works within a shared universe. I don't know how well those can mesh, long-term.
I love history but can't get into this series.i think the shop hype these comics to try to sell whatever they order.
Whilst Brian Hitch's enthusiasm for this series and desire to focus on it is laudable and nice to hear, it doesn't give much hope for us ever getting issues two and three of the Last Days of Lex Luthor.
is...uh ...his coat IMORTAL? cus otherwise it means he keeps getting the same style coat made over and over,..so then its a choice and not something he just hapens to have
Redcoat is the only Ghost Machine book that has really grabbed my attention. It's like playing Assassin’s Creed 3 by way of John Constantine
To be perfectly honest, the more I learn about this franchise the less intrigued I am. The seemingly strong interconnectivity between titles makes it very overwhelming and hard to get into.
Well clearly we are meant to be archenemies. The more I learn about this franchise the more intrigued I am. The interconnectivity is what's drawing me in.
Not a Geoff Johns fan so no thanks.
Great. I love it when British writers tell me what it means to be American.
Geoff Johns isn't British.
@@AgentNevets Bryan Hitch is tho
