1:40 those sticks should inserted vertically! You would get a lot more strength.

Great job! I haven't ever had to do such a repair but coordinating the pins for a tight fit up seems to be the challenge. In the end I guess it doesn't matter that much. A friend fixed his board the same way after snapping it while shooting the pier a couple of times & like you say it always breaks in a new spot. Keep up the great work!

When i was doing board repair on oahu we would grind off all the delam glass and use new. That way you have an actual bond to the foam. The chunk that you just layed back down, yeah sure the resin will keep it there, but it just a hard brittle flat section thats waiting to snap again. For filling the gap, used to use aerosel + q-cel so that it was more like foam, oppose to hard resin. Cuz again with just straight resin that thing may snap again. Also its way heavier to use just resin. The airbrush would not be there anymore, but it would be able to take that kind of beating again
Good tips thanks! I haven’t used aerosil yet I’ll give that a try. I’ve been looking for a strong filler that is as easy to sand as regular PU foam (for restoring blanks)
As I have been repairing sailplanes with glass and carbon for years I think the it will snap again. Unfortunately. You need to embed longer "spines/ribs" to go to at least 4-5 inches to both parts. maybe 4 or 5 of them. Few small cloths most probably won't take the pressure, Also have you considered of using a vacuum? Pretty standard on all glass and carbon work.
I've never thought this is possible.
I just snapped my favorite board today and am pretty insanely bummed out. Going to try to fix it I guess. Thanks for the video

Use round 1/4 wood dowels don't use ice cream sticks they too thin bend the wrong way too weak. And use cel c micro bubbles put a little white pigment

For sure! Those lights cure the resin when it’s mixed with the UV catalyst (as opposed to MEKP). It’s essentially the same thing as putting your board under the sun to cure solarez, but those lights enable you to work at night

Wow! You put in a lot of effort into this board! Awesome! I snapped my favorite board on my birthday, broke it into 2 pieces, and my nose(face) too :D, so all was pretty...let´s say not optimal. In the end of the Video, you told the owner something about it would be harder or not repair able if it was broken more in the mid section. Why? I still try to find someone (in germany-munich area) who can fix my 6.6 board. All i ever fixed was little dings.
Hey Claudia, thank you! The middle of the flexes a lot on a longboard, which can compromise a repair.
I don't know why more guys don't use carbon fiber rods for snap boards. its super strong and very light.
l would run a stringer on either side of the main stringer and two other stringers "the stringers would be made of cloth laminated to about an 8th thick and then cut into strips to suit the repair 6"-12" long just thicker than the board" each stringer would then be inserted on either side of the main stringer and the other two at equal distances between the main stringer and the rails, using these stingers they are strong and unseen, rather than lolly pop sticks pushed into the board? the main part of doing a repair on any board is to get the rocker right! get rid of the delaminated cloth and use new, sand the stringers down, and re-cloth as you would a new board. doing the repair as shown in the vid with a gap full of resin "use what we call bubbles" which is white foam powder then mix with resin l use it for most repairs? The repair will be strong and like people have said the board will most probably snap elsewhere? l hope my repair info makes sense?

You use uv resin. Isn't it vulnerable to discoloration? Please let me know the name of the product of uv resin if you don't mind

Great vids...lots to enjoy and learn. So you're using UV-activated hardener? Is the polyester resin standard or is it also specialized for UV curing? I haven't done a repair on a polyester board for ~55 years. I can still remember the smell of the resin. ;-)
i feel you. in my early 20s i worked as a glasser (is it called glasser in us? we call it laminator in germany)... now, 30 years later i had to fix/restore my beloved board. the smell of polyester is very special and kicks me back in those great years :-)

The wooden pieces are more so to line up the pieces but not much structural strength, is that correct? So if it is a clean cut i could do without them, right? Thanks
I'd say add wood if the piece is bigger than 1 foot. It does add some strength.
how long will those icecream sticks hold the foam together ? .... maybe carbon rods will work better....

Is there a reason the popsicle sticks are put in horizontally and not vertically oriented like a stringer?
No… you’re idea is better!
The reason for this is so they can flex with the board, if they are put in the same way as the stringer the foam can flex around the dowels cutting into the foam causing a void and cause them to become loose.

Personally I think it's smart to reuse the delammed glass. Others with more experience think differently. But for a pro bono good gesture, amazing!
But it would fun to do some experiments. What sticks best to foam, polyurethane and or styrofoam (EPS):
1. Gorilla Glue (polyurethane glues)
2. Elmer's (PVA glues and the like)
3. Resin (polyester and epoxy, or some other like the newer acrylics)
I always try to reuse delaminated glass. Also Gorilla Glue has been amazing for repairs but you have to be careful with it's expanding properties.

I don't know anyone who does ding repairs anymore here in Oz no one would do a snapped board repair as it will cost almost the same as buying a good 2nd had board we get cheap 2nd hand boards here in Oz on market place around $250 Aus
Yeah I generally talk people out of it because there are a lot of great used boards on the market here in California too. Sometimes it’s a sentimental board.

I repaired hundreds of boards, I would never use resin to glue the board back together and wouldn't use sticks to act as stringers for strength . I use gorilla glue and it is way stronger than resin and when the glue dries it expands and you will use less q cell and it will be lighter, as for using the original glass it will not be as strong as using new cloth . You got to remember that where the board snapped it won't brake at the same spot it will brake either above or below because when a board snaps there is stress and always the weakest part of the board will brake. LOL been there done it. I once had a customer that broke his board in three pieces and had to repair it. Got to remember once a board brakes it will never be the same. I repaired boards for a lot is shops on Oahu .

Do you mix q-cell powder with gorilla glue? Or did you mean something else by using less q-cell?
Gorilla glue is to put the board together , when gluing board back don't use to much glue just put the glue in the middle and it will expand and then you make your mud ( q cell with resin ) and fill the cracks and make everything level

@@Rogue_waveI'm a big fan of your work and usually super impressed by the result, in this case I'd be interested if the board held up well after the repair - not trying to come across as some smart guy, I'm genuinly curious.
I think in addition to the above, I'd probably take longitudinal stress into account more by both reinforcing the previous stringer line(s) and by relaminating a larger area front to back (there's a good vid on this by DingDrx).
That said, you'd of course have a lot more work that needs to be paid for. I think most people underestimate the amount of labour it takes for a good repair.
