I have a friend whose Dad used to coach kids throughout the top clubs of Europe (Ajax being one) who had all of his football coach - badges). My mate grew up disliking football because his dad used to make him play. As my friend got older he started to fall in love with the beautiful game because of us his friends and not having to commit to the game when told. My friend now thinks what could’ve been if he had fell in love with football when his dad used to try and make him play

In his prime this guy was one of my favorites! I think one trait of his that goes mostly on spoken about was his strength. Carlos could shield anyone off the ball and had a lower body strength to anchor down and win 50-50 balls. He was built for futbol.

Besides the great Hugo Sanchez, Carlos Vela is perhaps the most skilled Mexican player to ever play for the national team. We saw glimpses of his true genius at a young age on the pitch but it wasn’t consistent enough to translate to major success with Mexico. Now more mature and at the later part of his career, he’s done some incredible things for LAFC. I think he’s at peace now just playing in the MLS and getting to enjoy time with his family.

Honestly I’ll say this, as much as it may be a risk, I think the mls should absolutely pounce on players who are like vela. Get these guys in their prime and grow the league even more with top players like this. It lets them enjoy the states and basketball and stuff if they care about that more, but the teams are still getting top players. If they get rid of the salary cap then they could be doing amazing things w the league, especially taking away the DP and TAM stuff

I'm a season ticket holder for LAFC since they started and Vela has definitely been appreciated here. Got us a title and won league MVP when he broke the scoring record.
While he is on the pitch he does show competitiveness and drive plus wanting to succeed for the fans and teammates, but he does checkout after the whistle like a job and is never at postgame celebrations after wins. But it's cool he doesn't owe that as long as he is scoring goals and getting us points.
And he rarely ever celebrates goals. He just raises his arms and smiles lol
I work security for FC Dallas and a few days ago we played them and he was one of the first players on the bus lol. They did lose so a lot of LAFC players didn't want to stay too long. But Chiellini was greeting the fans and signing and eveything so he was very nice and humble.

Imagine barely trying in training and not staying after or getting early to training because it’s just a job for you. He became a pro just cuz he’s naturally talented. He definitely could’ve been Mexico’s best player of all time. Even the legend, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, praised this guy. To be completely honest though, he’s not the only Mexican player that lacked passion or commitment but he was the only one with natural talent I think that is why Mexico is so mediocre at football and that’s coming from Mexico fan

As a Mexican, 2014 could've been the year Mexico could've reach the quarterfinals or even the semifinals if Vela was part of that team, but I can't blame him for not wanting to go as he had issues with one of the players. That was Vela at his prime and seeing him alongside Gio (also at his prime) and Chicharito would've been a thing of beauty.
When it was announced that Vela was going to be back with the National Team against the Netherlands (the same team that eliminated Mexico in the World Cup a few months earlier) I remember thinking "don't expect much from him because this will be his first game with the National Team in three years" and then he scored a beauty of a goal 10 minutes in and scored another one later on. If only Vela cared about football...

me :/ i genuinely believe never took it serious only trained at practices but gave it half ass when i could and still manage to join chivas academy unfortunately quit cuz i hated playing felt more like a chore then anything i regret it tho . i was always naturally better. i would score 8 goals :/ 5 per game minimum that’s how i was scouted and unfortunately quit for that and other reasons financially to since i lived in a small town and couldn’t keep traveling far

If he was just paid a small amount of money or spending most of the time on the bench, he would've ended up retiring from football very early just like Gareth Bale did. Even if he did get paid less while playing basketball, he would still be motivated to play every day. That's what Messi does, he was even willing to take a wage cut just to stay at Barca for a few more years. They had an experience they had to make a deep run in the world cup Imagine having a prime Hernandez and Carlos Vela As your front. I feel they would have made a deep run. Adding him to the roster and they had the crazy coach. That would have gotdone the best out of him.

Bro i lowkie know how he feels, obviously not the same skills as him but i loved futbol as a kid so damn much and then my dad wanted me to succeed so much that he had me in 2 different teams. A club team and then lower skilled local team and sometimes i would even play with the older kids in the club team. So on a single day i would have 3 matches. I got burnt out so damn quick but didn’t want to disappoint my dad as he gave me so much support out all my siblings.

Vela did reach his potential, but football was not his priority; the reason he abandoned the Mexican Squad was that he has issues with one of the captains at the time, Salcido, who basically blame him and another player, last name Juarez for organizing a party where they invited ladies of the evening some happen to be trans, and the tabloids ran the story so Juarez and Vela had a 6-month suspension of the national team while everyone else involved just got a monetary penalty after that Vela refuse to come back. Later Salcido announced he was retiring from the national team, and guess who accepted to come back. Vela did Scoring 2 goals against the Netherlands in a friendly match. After the Russian World Cup, he also announced his retirement, stating that with or without him, Mexico did the about the same, and it was time for a younger generation to take his place, something freaking Ochoa refuses to step down and let other younger goalies shine. Vela was gifted and always shine on half-the-table teams because he wasn't looking for the spotlight; he just wanted to play; he liked football when he was playing, but outside of that, he rather do something else again; it was not his priority unless he was on the field.
Man as a die hard mexican fan a Mexican American it was truly exciting to watch Carlos vela when I was 10 years old win the first type of World Cup for Mexico then I watched him from 09-21 I would look forward to his highlights all over Spain, news in arsenal, even the gold cup in the summer, gio dos santos, Carlos vela were the perfect dynamic duo & would have been the game changer for us in the 2014 World Cup match against the Netherlands but, as always fate always has a good way at laughing at us Mexicans when it comes to the WC, I kept up so much with Carlos vela in his prime with real sociedad It was built up hype for 2014 he didn’t show up, then 2018 he kinda flopped he had no chemistry like with gio, then 2018-2020 I would fly to LA from Texas to watch this guy play for LA galaxy games I remember him and Ibrahimovich score hattricks and LAFC in a thrilling win 5-4.. honestly it’s was the best MLS game I had ever watched and I was front row.. now 2023 I am truly disappointed on what this guy could have became but, at least grateful to see glimpses of greatness. Hopefully we get another talent in Mexico like this we deserve it.

The thing is that people paint him as this soulless mercenary when in reality he was treated unfairly by FMF and used as a scapegoat and the relationship also soured because of all the scandals and corruption in the Mexican NT. He showed up when he had to it’s just that he was one of the smart ones and decided he wouldn’t deal with the federation bullshit.

Dude did what made him happiest. He used his talent at a sport he didn't actually enjoy beyond it being his job to get paid Premier League and La Liga money, and then build himself a dream life in America where he can do whatever he wants. You can only respect that.

Now he gets to be at the top of a smaller league in MLS making bank and likely being able to have a longer career and make money longer due to not having as many injuries due to a less rigorous schedule and hectic competition to prem or LaLiga

Sorry to break it to you, but MLS has a far more grueling schedule given the long flights and time changes. Not to mention that the league plays during the summer, and when many parts of the country suffer from intense heat and humidity. On top of it the fitness levels are very high and it is a very physical league. MLS isn't the cakewalk ppl make it out to be.
@@yacobzNo doubt it's no cakewalk, but likely due to the much higher competition, viewership, sponsorship etc in PL vs MLS...I don't think it's as much of a struggle for a PL player to transition to MLS and be somebody as it would be a MLS player to transition to PL and be somebody.
A bit like what UFC is to Bellator. Both are tough and require tremendous talent and drive to succeed, but one is on a completely different level than the other.
MLS seems to scale more to EFL Champions League than Premier League.
I wished you didn’t have to remind me of the best Mexican player prior to the 2014 cup. Vela was so good, and when I didn’t see him on the 2014 roster, I was heartbroken as a 15 year old because I knew we were going to lack a top 3 Mexican roster player. I have absolutely zero doubt in my mind we don’t make at least QF with him on the team

Well from what I understand their little 2011 prostitution scandal fucked him. They were publicly blaming vela, a young single guy, over the married grown men in the national team… and quite frankly I don’t blame him.

played for Aston Villa from age 9-14 and played tennis my whole life side by side. also won national tennis tournaments. had to decide which to pick at age 15. loved football hated tennis but chances of becoming professional in tennis were much higher so chose tennis. Still regret my decision to this day. 21 now and too late to get back into football. still playing tennis at a national level.

He was very good because he saw the game of football as a basketball player those chip shots are what we call jellys around the basket, his long range shot idea and willing to take them comes from probably practicing 3s. His passes are similar to outlet passes and does the 1-2 pick and roll quite interesting tbh.

There are aspects of each game you can apply to the other for sure. Finding space, creating space, passing, etc.
I would say only foot work and defense translate from futbol I played both and it definitely helps to play soccer but chip shots has nothing to do with basketball

I was very good at cricket but I loved football. At 19 years old I would play around in the nets against first class cricket players and match them. My parents never pushed me to play any sport. I'm a P.E. Teacher now. Give thanks for your parents Vela.

it´s not the lack of huevos, it´s the corruption of the FMF, along with the league, with combines mediocre level with extremely high wages. Unlike South American players, young Mexican players don´t need to go abroad to a good league in order to make a living off football, so they stay in Mexico and let their talent go to waste in an easy league. Kinda like Vela in LAFC, not that I think about it

The first time I watched Vela, he was 16 and still fighting for a spot at Arsenal. Even then though I could tell this guy had something special about him. I could have wagered he was Brazilian with the flair he had with the ball at his feet.
