IMO the greatest female vocalist ever !!! Her voice was effortless and so pure ! Her voice was Angelic….
Karen Carpenter pure tone is in everyone's top 5 female vocalists. My favorite is Ann Wilson of HEART. Her range, power, and delivery are something special.
Love the Carpenters!! Karen’s voice is superb. Close to You was our first dance song at our wedding in 1973.
Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett wrote this song, which is about a woman who falls for a rock star, has a tryst with him, but then in a bout of delusion awaits his return, apparently falling for it when he said he loved her.
I grew up with the Carpenters' music. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.
This version was recorded in the mid 70's with the normal band's music. Richard added the orchestra in the mid 80's (I believe 85) 2 years after Karen's death.
It seems like far too many brilliant artists fall victim to tragedy. But she remains an incomparable voice.
So true
Beautiful and regal applies to you as well my dear. First time I’ve ever encountered you. Subscribe.
I grew up listening to this music. The world lost an angel when she passed. I’m glad to see there are angels still listening to her. 🫶🏻🫵🏻
Karen Carpenter had a voice of an angel.
Karen had the voice of an Angel😊
Hello MrsPenPal, Karen Carpenter's voice is so iconic, smooth & beautiful, that she could randomly "sing the phone book," get nominated for a Grammy and probably win it too!!! Very nice reaction my friend!!!
Hi CR long time
@@MrsPenPal Hello Blessing, I'm still here and I'm still in your corner...Please keep the faith & stay true to your calling, as I say this with nothing but "agape" love, respect & appreciation for you...Sincerely, CR SoundDoctor
You have a lovely review MrsPen. Im on my late 60s, so remember Carpenters very well on the radio and TV specials. Did you know every female harmony in all of her songs was hers as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard ? She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard, her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's 3+ octave voice was discovered by Herb Alpert, A&M Records, in 1969, which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best, beautiful, female voice ever. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she/they received 4 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. Check other songs such as 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hideaway', 'Rainy Days and Mondays',' 'This Masquerade', "We've Only Just Begun", 'I Can Dream Cant I'(a big band era song), 'Hurting Each Other', 'Need To Be In Love', 'Goodbye To Love', etc.. She had a few friends including Petula Clark, Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick. She had anorexia with a serious onset in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Married a guy in 1982 that was broke, didn't tell her he had a vasectomy, and mistreated her. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. Her solo album was released after her death. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday"].
'Only Yesterday', 'Yesterday Once More'....................
Hi MrsPP!! The song starts with an oboe followed by French Horns, 2 instruments that convey a melancholy atmosphere better than most. The uplifting chorus's have one of the most iconic trumpet riffs ever played on a pop song. Karen also recorded her vocal on one live take. Superstar ? Indeed she is. You may've heard Luther Vandross's 1983's popular (yet very different) version of this song. ' Great reaction Blessing, RNB
You might want to consider reacting to ‘Goodbye to Love’, another Carpenters masterpiece. Karen’s brother Richard was responsible for all the arrangements and song production.
This song always makes me cry 😢.. I love her music. ❤
I really like how your reacts are straight to the point, no nonsense and genuine emotion!
Thanks and I like the way you write no nonsense straight to the point 😂
The story in the song is a young woman who falls in love with a famous performer who plays the guitar, a Superstar in her eyes. He once told her he loves her but now she's lonely without him. She mentions he's not really with her, it's just him on the radio.
"Superstar" is sung from the prospective of a groupie who had an affair with a musician and longs for him to return to her town. He told her that he loved her but it was probably something he said to many other women but she thinks there is more behind it and that someday he will return.
Sings like a drummer. Knows where to put the emphasis
What a glorious reaction. ♥️
Yes, Karen is an unfathomable talent. I'm so glad that you have turned your ear toward her. She left us an extraordinary legacy.
I love the way you just surrender to the musical magic with your reactions, Ms.PP. 💕
Mrspenpal you are correct and the original title as written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russel was Groupie (Superstar). That title tells it all. Richard does all the arranging and musicality, I mean the intro by the Oboe & French Horns sends chills up my spine, not to mention the Harp. With permission Richard changed the lyric “sleep with you again” to “be with you again.” More in keeping with there more wholesome image. If you want to do a comparison look for Groupie by Delaney & Bonnie it’s on CZcams. Also Bonnie a few years ago did a live version of Groupie and Leon was in the audience and honored. He passed a little later. Nice reaction!
she was fantastic!
❤ you are so lovely !! Both of You ! 🙏 Many Thanx !
There are only three female singers that can literally make me cry Karen Carpenter, The great Whitney Houston and Mama Cass from The Mamas and the Papa's.
She felt the emotion of that song because she was a person who had a touch of Melancholy ( a form of depression) is what I have been told. It contributed to her illness of anorexia. 😭😭😭
She plays drums Great too😊
I heard Rainy Days and Mondays in an elevator at a medical building, I stayed on for 12 more floors to hear it all. Of course I was headed to my car then, where I had the CD, LOL
Her brother is in here too.😊
Yes, sadness, everyone has experienced it. If they're alive that is. Karen had a voice that gave the sad, hope. Richard arranged, and played piano, the songs Karen sang them. She started out as a drummer and eventually transitioned to singing.
She still makes chills go down my spine. 🫠
Saw her sing and drum in 1972 .Effortless singing and drumming at the same time
Live with no autotune, it didn’t even exist back then.😊
My singing teacher used Karen & Barbra Streisand as examples on how to sing beautifully.
❤❤❤
This was in the 1995 Movie Tommy Boy funny scene
😍
This or Rainy Days and Mondays are considered by most fans as their best song.
The song’s about a groupie in love with a superstar.
Yup. The cautionary tale of a groupie.
Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell with Delaney Bramlett. (1969). Atco Records.
Carpenters release, (1971). A&M records. Billboard peak position #1.
Don't ask me why, but I've always had a slightly different take on this song. She is longing for this music man who is traveling around, and she hears his songs on the radio, but in reality the relationship is all in her mind. She's a fan, fantasizing about this guy, whoever he is, but they have no connection in real life. But then, I'm weird, so.....
raised by a toxic narcissitic mother one can feel the pain in karens voice
