  • Yup. MS Igloo. The CG anime put out ages ago that showed the Zeon side of the One Year War. Surprisingly, this was a really fun watch. It's an interesting side of the Gundam lore that you don't see otherwise. Let's dive a bit more into MS Igloo to talk about what makes this thing tick.
Also, the Zabi Family hates kids confirmed.

The Jotunheim crew appeared in the 0083 manga, still using a Zudah, Oggos, and Hildolfr Kais.

tbf the oggo makes sense, its a zeon ball equivalent. Its Cheap, decently armed and probably has a high thrust to weight, but like the ball its a flying coffin, or as the feddie pilots called it "the flying trash can" to little to late tho

Yo I wonder If Studio Orange could adapt a Gundam series or make an mecha series and make the action look phenomenal and honestly the way they handle the action scenes in Beastars and Trigun Stampede I could imagine they would nail it right out the park.

i like MS igloo. i think the cgi for all the mecha battles works (although sometimes the mobile suits dont feel like they are very weighty like giant machines would be in gravity). The gripe i have with visuals is the CGI characters. this is close to the "uncanny valley" i think, and the way they animate characters makes them feel like they are spergs who cant stop moving and fidgeting. i think they should've at least went stylized for the cg animation for the characters, or go traditional animation.
i agree with all points said about s1 of igloo. lore wise you get to see the guys who develop and implement the endless parade of weird zeon suits and armors. kind of demonstrates that type of german ww2 "we must make bigger tanks and hundreds of variants of our existing tanks" type attitude that doesn't realy win wars.
for igloo s2 i like the format of the federation having stories of similar experimental productions, and i think it works that the stories have no real ties to each other. shows many more perspectives in a war (i think mecha war stories should follow this format more often like the "obsolete" youtube anime).
my biggest issue with s2 is the way they connected all the episodes. how would someone combine a thread through many unrelated short stories? well usually they include a 3rd party that is an investigator trying to find the connection with the random evidence. in s2 this could be someone trying to research the weapons development to curb worthless spending during a desperate war, or maybe a guy who writes the obituaries of pilots or a war reporter traveling across the front.....what i wasn't expecting was a literal death god making deals with people about to die....what the fuck?!
where did the concept of a god come into the setting? its not even something that looks like it belongs to an existing religion, or implied that its the mental breakdown of people about to die imagining they are seeing what they think they believe is death. nope, its a literal god of the gundam setting because no matter who sees it its the same looking god. none of this makes sense. this is a big issue for my enjoyment of the second season, since so far the series had focused on grounded conflicts and actively downplayed newtype shenanigans. this would be like if 8th ms team is going normal all throughout the series and then in the final episode they introduce newtype ghost children.....oh wait, they actually did that, no wonder i actively ignore that last episode of 8th ms. i swear, this completely breaks my immersion in what i thought was hard core gritty warfare drama with mechs.
i bet people will justify the death god by saying stuff like "its probably an ancient newtype spirit". i swear, the more gundam focuses on newtypes the more i lose interest. this type of japanese spiritualism horrifically inserts itself in so many mecha series that its ridiculous. it ruins so many series. it converts relatable human stories into fantasy deus ex machina schlock. i dont mind if they want to have spiritual characters, but at least dont actually have those spirits come into the plot.
imagine for a second, you are watching a modern war movie, and while there is a christian amongst the soldiers its not so "in your face", but then at the very end of the movie a literal angel with wings flys down from heaven and stops the bullets and then both the ukrainians and russians cry and embrace each other and then start singing praises to our lord....would be a pretty big slap in the face. imagine if that happened at the end of "saving private ryan". instead of tom hanks sacrificing himself and then telling mat damon to "earn this", thus leaving the very human impact of "survivors guilt", they instead have a military chaplain come over, then by the power of the lord resurrect tom hanks and then call in a divine orbital strike to destroy the tiger tank. fuck, it pisses me off.
enough of my rant, as always i love your takes on the OYW. i look forward to more.

So wait, let me get this straight...you hate Gihren? Wasn't especially clear during the headshot montage...
I do honestly need to give Igloo a chance; I was always turned off by the animation but it's on the small list of Gundam series I've not watched yet. And the Zudah is still on my list of kits to get, once I've trimmed the backlog a bit.

Honestly I’ll take the CG of MS Igloo over the vast majority of CG anime of the past decade. I’ve played late PS2 games whose cutscenes look better than the janky tripe that Polygon Pictures puts out (yeah I’m still salty over their Godzilla trilogy, although the Pacific Rim one was shockingly competent).

The CGI on the mechanical designs look absolutely fine, not my favorite style for them, yet honestly not bad. The humans on the other hand, yikes they look terrible definitely shows it's age and looks extremely uncanny valley
Definitely agree the Oggo and Hildolfr are completely pointless wastes of resources. The Oggo looks the Ball, yet somehow looks worse, I don't know how Zeon did it but they did. Honestly if they were that desperate dusting off some Zaku I's would be better, okay still wouldn't be great but still leagues better than those junk piles. What's the point of the Hildolfr if the Zaku tank exists, the latter looks like it functions better and considering they're built from damaged Zaku's allot less resource intensive too.

I have always enjoyed the One Year War's parallels to WW2 in terms of the design philosophies of the two sides. Tried and true and taking advantage of big industry vs. a bunch of fuckwits wasting resources chasing wonder weapons when they already started with reduced resources.

Zeon hates children? The Federation uses children as disposable shields. I think it goes both ways but I think the Federation is worse than Zeon. Maybe because I'm just a huge Zaku fan.

    • @BigMicahC
      @BigMicahC  Před 3 měsíci +3

Both sides do the same thing with deploying children. The difference between the Federation and Zeon is the Federation's corrupt, but the Zeon are genocidal.

I see. It's been a long time since I watched Gundam and really remember the Zaku and Amuro, parts of the original Gundam and Gundam Wing. I do enjoy the more in depth of the Gundam series as I am slowly getting back into it though.

First two IGLOOs - Surprisingly underrated. Definitely worth a watch.
Third one - Makes absolutely no sense because of the shinigami. You could write it off as a halucination, but IT TALKS TO THE SCREEN. Yeah, probably the weakest Gundam OVA ever. Screw IGLOO 2. Shame cause it's got some really good scenes like the White Giant and the bazooka crew fighting him.
