West Side Story is an upcoming American musical romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, who also serves as one of the film's executive producers. The film is the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim, which is based loosely on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler (in her feature film debut), with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Brian d'Arcy James, and Corey Stoll. Rita Moreno, who appeared in the 1961 film, has a supporting role and is an executive producer. The film is dedicated to Spielberg's father Arnold, who died on August 25, 2020, the year the film was initially supposed to be released.
The film started development in 2014 by 20th Century Fox, and Kushner started writing the screenplay in 2017. In January 2018, Spielberg was hired, and casting began by September 2018. Justin Peck choreographed the dance sequences. Filming began in July 2019 and wrapped up two months later. Shooting occurred in New York and New Jersey. West Side Story is scheduled to premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on December 7, 2021, and be released theatrically by 20th Century Studios in the United States on December 10, 2021, after being delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic

A graceful and gracious tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Acknowledgment of the Estates of Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents, and Leonard Bernstein (his children), which gave permission to do WSS. I can't believe Russ Tamblyn and Elliot Feld are present from the 1961 film. Russ played the key role of Riff, leader of the Jets. Steven Spielberg sounds like a wonderful man. Only warmth and generosity.
Beautiful
yah! needed a camera on the '61 cast survivors...
Impressive speech. He remembers everyone's name and I didn't detect even one "...and em's" throughout.
I never been so hyped to see one of Stevens movies on the big screen until now! Rest In Peace Mr Sondheim
"The amazing Russ Tamblyn " that's an understatement . Russ made Riff loveable, dynamic, charming and charismatic.
Steven spielberg is a best film director and he make good films he inspired me
Making my own films
To get Steven Sondheim high praise is amazing
This the extended version of the Oscar speech he'll have to make next year.
Since most Oscar winners are bombs you may be right.
Splendid speech. 😎🎹
10:00 *A glimpse of Rita Moreno!*
don't miss this awesome musical comedy... Great Steven Spielberg's movie
Not much of acomedy
COMEDY?! LOL! 🤔
There are some definitely funny PARTS in this new Movie Version, but I would call this FAR from a Comedy!
This film is a cinema marvel. Are their flaws? Absolutely no, none I saw. Its heartbreaking that the film underperformed at the B.O.
Movie Musicals are so fragile, and producers and investors understandably want a return on their investment. But hopefully more will be made and rewarded. Lets hope Oscar is friendly to this gem.
so damn unfair he didn't get to see this movie premiere. you know he would've been there.
Sondheim was on Stephen Colbert’s late show months before he died. Sondheim was very excited about Spielberg’s West Side Story. Part of me hoped that he got to see it before he passed away.
@@HarrisBanneck oh i think he did. steven said he got sondheim's blessing.
@@ClassicDepravities he was there for a lot of the process but spielberg said he really wanted to see it with an audience, which he couldn't do 😔
@@HarrisBanneck at the end of his interview with Stephen Colbert he said he saw the movie and loved it!
Early critical reviews have praised the film. Once again, Spielberg has made a masterpiece of a film.
except for the guy who plays tony
@@JoefromNJ1 What have they said about him?
Critics reviews? Currently critics have minimal credibility of any sort.
In 2021 film critics have less clout than your neighborhood drunk.
Yes, it TRULY is!!
I am looking so forward to seeing this Spielberg is a genius this looks like a masterpiece
BELIEVE me, it IS and in EVERY way!!
Beautiful
In case anyone doesn’t know why “SS2” said “thanks for the hat“ it’s a line from the musical Sunday in the Park… Also Sondheim’s‘s 2 volume set of lyrics are called “Finishing the Hat”and “Look I made a Hat” both references to the song “Finishing the Hat, “ which is a brilliant statement about the isolation of creation of art.
perfect
Im chagrined he didn't mention the film's Casting Director, Cindy Tolan. AMAZING WORK!
I love this so much... including that the only time the camera cuts to the audience is when Steven introduces the one and only Rita Moreno!!!
❤️❤️
👏🙌🙏
For those who might not know the reference , "the hat" is a metaphor from Stephen Sondheim about the artistic process, in a great song called "Finishing the Hat". czcams.com/video/ducG55pfCMQ/video.html
I thought it was a reference to Indiana Jones , this is cool
GO ARI !
Hello-
that looks like a pretty big screen. where was the premiere held?
Lincoln Center
Couldn't they show the folks ?????? Hello
AGREED!!
It's AWESOME to focus on Steven Spielberg, because after all, he's the Director of this glorious, Cinematic MASTERPIECE!; but how hard would it have been, to just pan the Camera over to the various people in the Audience who were BEHIND and in FRONT of the Camera?!
Definitely DISAPPOINTING to see Rita Moreno, ONLY!
It's like the rest weren't important enough, or didn't have enough clout, or impact, which makes NO sense!!
West story is à big hit
For. A remake and I saw it original of West side story
And that's still a number
One best film. In box
Office and I'm sure
West side story 2021
Is gonna win the
Oscars to be in a
Box office too
It’s funny h said tony and Maria togthether😅
Sorry I prefer the original movie and the balcony scene I love Julian ovenden and Sierra boggess from the BBC proms there voices are magical
Oh, so you must have already seen Spielberg's version...
@@MarcusAsaro I have seen it with friends in new your I sooner have the original movie it's a classic this for me was to violent and bullying racism out of context did not like America in it in the streets prefer the roof scene and Rita was not in this long enough for me Rachel had a lovely voice
@@janettefrancis7445 it wasn’t bad but I still prefer the energy and look of the original but the new Anita was phenomenal like Rita was in the original film. She might win a lot of awards since she really stole the show
My all time favorite director, far better than hack James Cameron. Spielberg can direct just about EVERY genre of film, action, drama, comedy, and now musicals. The same can NOT be said about Cameron at all!
That was uncalled for. You don’t need to compliment one filmmaker by insulting another
This bombed catastrophically at the box office. I love watching Hollywood die from self inflicted wounds.
It will still be beloved.
I still do not know what motivated this remake?
Can't be a "remake", it's originally a play, not a movie.
It’s an adaptation
His love and respect for the original! It’s a passion project.
Spielberg has been wanting to do a musical forever and he loved West Side Story since the original film came out in the 60s
@@liamcarmody4217 That, and the original had brownface.
swing and a miss on the tony casting. otherwise great film.
Did you see the movie?
@@joewhitehead3 yeah, that's what I'D like to know?!
It seems that most of the people who didn't see the new Movie Version are ripping on the Character of Tony, (Ansel Elgort), which makes NO sense!
On the other hand, if they HAVE seen the new Movie, WHY would they STILL think he didn't do at least a good Job in the role?!
I personally think he did a PHENOMENAL Job and in EVERY way!!
Virtue signaling anyone?
BULLSHIT !! He has no more idea take make a new movie! His next movie : Rambo 15 ! LOL
Not my favorite musical. Best was Wonderful Town.
Then why are you here?
"Wonderful Tune"?
Perhaps you were thinking of
‘Wonderful Town.’ 😎🎹
😜😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
@@RobtinOH You do know that Wonderful Town was a musical that won 5 Tony Awards - or are you trying to be clever?
: politically correct, Hollywood-acclaimed $100M remake of crashes at the box office, and fares even worse among European and Latin American audiences.
You didn't see the film. It is not politically correct, it merely casts Puerto Ricans as... Puerto Ricans. Get a life.
@@richardblock2458THANK you!!
You know a movie is going to be horrid when the director has to get up and do a ten-minute apology on it before it's even screened.
That was FAR from an apology from Steven Spielberg!
He was HONORING the various people involved behind AND in FRONT of the Camera in the making of this INCREDIBLE, 2021 Retelling of West Side Story; and also pointing out and honoring some of the living Relatives of the various original Masters of the 1961 Movie, (Sondheim, Bernstein, Robbins, etc.)!
