Granted that the '61 film is certainly not a masterpiece, it is, however, compared to Spielberg's mediocre adaptation. The value of Wise and Robbins' film - which I imagine was also present in the theatrical performance - was undoubtedly constituted by the "modern", dynamic choreographies of the master Jerome Robbins. Choreography perfectly integrated with the social and cultural environment of the story. Choreographies with new movements, re-adaptation of the classic repertoire of American film ballet (I am thinking of dancers and choreographers such as Michael Kidd, the divine Astaire, Gene Kelly). The choreography is practically marginal in the remake. Choreography often taken poorly (for example by dispersing the dancers in the midst of crowds of passers-by) and which no longer has the essentiality and significance of the original one.
I don't understand why it is written that Robbins' ballets are "refreshed and accelerated".
From the introductory one where the two groups of boys make the danced movement of the body something natural and almost non-perceptible, without discontinuity with respect to the non-danced parts. Among other things, the whole sequence is longer and more complex as it appears in the new version.
Then there is the famous "America" - in the '61 film - all enclosed, concentrated in the space of a terrace of a building. A dance that seems to explode and go beyond that limited stage, with boys and girls who perform, making themselves bearers (beautiful lyrics) of different cultural values. None of this in Spielberg's film where the scene is dilated taking it to the streets of New York, where it loses its bite, dynamism and social criticism (and a group of people - in the previous sequence - with closed fists and in version protester to update social criticism) weighed down by the presence of a crowd of passers-by, which distracts attention from the dancers and what their dance conveys. Apart from the fact that even the movements of the dancers are no longer the original ones or are partially so. What can we say then that one of Robbins' most intense choreographic sequences - the “Cool” one - which does not even have a choreography in the 2021 film.
The only acceptable choreographic sequence in Spielberg's film is the one set in the gym. But if you look carefully at how it was choreographed by Robbins, you can see that there is an inventiveness absent in his clone.
The fact then - to move on to the non-choreographed scenes - that the scenes alternate in a different order in the recent film than the original one (and it would seem that Spielberg's film is more respectful of how the theatrical version was built, but this does not matter. ) confirms the mediocre staging of the remake. For example, the song Maria is almost immediately followed, in a hasty way, by the song Tonight, while in Wise's film between the two was placed (with more interesting dramaturgical results) the scene "America" (of which I have mentioned). The song "Cool" in Wise's film comes - in a narratively more coherent way - after the scene of the fight (with the killing of the two young people) and has the function of releasing the tension and anguish accumulated by the boys in the duel scene . A way to elaborate, to metabolize what has happened. And in this scene - all the choreographic sequences were directed only by Robbins - pay attention to certain movements of the camera that are really perfect to enhance the cathartic meaning of the dance.
The introduction of Valentina's new character doesn't seem to make much sense to me. It is perhaps just a way to pay homage to Moreno from the original film. But this does not justify the introduction of this novelty. Better (with more depth) the character of Doc in the version of '61. In the end, even the ending of Wise's film is more valuable, inspired than the new one.
Obviously, in both versions the reference to Shakespeare is inappropriate.
As for the interpreters, it does not seem to me that there are abysmal differences between the two versions.
It is valuable that in Spielberg's film the character of Maria is intensely interpreted and the actress is not dubbed, as she is endowed with a beautiful and expressive voice.
Finally, last but not least, what about the opening credits (above all) and ending credits of Wise's film?
Intelligent, surprising, due - as is well known - to Saul Bass and surpassing (in their modernity) those of the latest version of the work.
I believe that this film confirms that Spielberg - an overrated author - is a director for all tastes and for all genres of film. And perhaps this is also why he lacks in him - even in the most interesting films - the ability to create a work that goes beyond itself, that transcends narration into a sora of meta narration.

After watching the original version at home, my six year old went with me to watch this at the cinema.
As expected, he was slightly bored by the love story. But he sat on the edge of his seat during the rumble. I asked if he wanted to go home after this and he said no.
When Tony died, I saw my little boy remove his glasses and wipe his eyes very quickly. He denied being sad though.
At home he played the movie and wanted me to help him re-enact the dance moves (which tired me out, so I used his teddy bear).
I think this new version has made a member of the new generation fall in love with West Side Story.

Just watched this movie and it was great!!!. I enjoyed the original West Side Story and this New Version from one of my favorite produces Steven Spielberg was definitely not disappointing. Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Fell in love Rachel Zegler a mix Hispanic actress and soon to be a "STAR"... The movie was funny , entertaining, romantic and full of energy. Would definitely recommend to see. (A+)

A version like the original one wouldn’t work out in today’s world. People don’t like musicals as much, or they like them with sound bites or songs that get radio play. They don’t like something with such a traditional feel as WSS.

It’s a story that has already been done. Spielberg s is the Politically Correct version and is incomprehensible without the Wise/Robbins great film making. As expected it doesn’t work and has many problems. Personally I felt dirty and mean after watching this version. For example, the Jets covered in black paint and dirt do not bother to clean up. Or, Tony being an ex con was a stupid backstory without advancing the action. Speaking of Action, where was he? Where were the other characters? And there was no humor as in the Wise/Robbins, or romance for that matter. I think.

    New West Side Story:
    1. Good idea to have Rita Moreno inserted into the Steven Spielberg script of *West Side Story*
    2. Best Actress role for Oscar nomination for Spielberg's version will be Maria (Rachel Zegler) and then Anita (Ariana DeBose) for supporting Oscar nomination. I think Rachel Zegler's acting for Maria, was better than Natalie Wood in the Robert Wise
    production.
    3. Second choice for best supporting actress: Rita Marino. (yes again)
    4. I did not like any of the character actors choice for either the Jets or Sharks in this Spielberg version. There was no manly handsome guy in either gang.
    5. I did not like the first act of the Spielberg version as much as the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin's version, however the second act of Spielberg's version made up for the 1st act's shortcomings. Spielberg's first act of his movie was too dark.
    6. My choice for which movie was better would be the flawless *1st* West Side Story. Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin's version was the better direction in the 1st Movie version of the play. However the second act of Spielberg's version made tears come from my eyes, but don't tell anybody as I don't want my manhood questioned.
    7. In the first movie the Jet gang gave respect for the little girl playing on the ground and walked around her play area. In the Spielberg version the Jets ripped up the little girls artwork on the ground. I could not get behind the Jets after that.
    8. The dance scenes in both versions were equally well done, however the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin's version had all better camera composition on all frames. The colorful lighting on the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin’s movie made a lot of scenes magical.
    9. Spielberg claimed he did not want to copy the first, Robert Wise version, however he did in the opening. In the first, Wise version, we have an aerial shot flying over Manhattan, in Spielberg's version we have an aerial shot flying over the demolished section of the gang area with same Robert Wise sounding intro music.
    10. Spielberg's version of West Side Story will be nominated for *Best Picture* Oscar this year. However, from the *WOKE* Hollywood, they might choose another low budget foreign movie with another language made movie like *Parasite* with no whites in it, that few saw, but won for diversity's sake. Parasite movie (looked like a college student made film) winning Best Picture over *1917* a real professional movie. And like Spielberg's movie, *Saving Private Ryan* that did not win Best Picture, which it should have, got beat by that terrible love story *Shakespeare in Love* again, that nobody saw.
    11. Why couldn't Spielberg worry about that most all the actors should be Puerto Rican have to be Puerto Rican? That could be looked as racist decision on WOKE Spielberg. High class acting is art, that a great actor could pull it off being a Puerto Rican even if he is not in real life a Puerto Rican. Yes, we hated all the 1940 movies where they always picked a white actor to play an Asian, that obviously did not look even near an Asian. The great Spielberg would deny another race to play any role unless they are the same race of the character portrayed? This is a slam in the face of all actors. Example, he could have used actors from any South American country or other country as long as they really looked and acted Puerto Rican. Come on man! Let all actors try out from any race as long as they really look and act the part.
    13. What was that freak dark character tranny character that used to be a tom boy girl in the Robert Wise movie? We could see in the Robert Wise movie that this was a tom boy girl that we liked. However, in this movie, we don't know who this scary creature from hell was in Spielberg's version. Spielberg was again trying to be WOKE by picking a real tranny freak character from this year’s 2021 to make the LGBTQ people today happy. That demonic freak character was a bust.
    14. There will be other Oscar nominations beside best

    15. From Breitbart: Estimated production budget of West Side Story: 7 Biggest Woke Box Office Busts of 2021: ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Eternals,’ and More. $100 million - Worldwide gross so far: $36.6 million. Steven Spielberg went full woke by not including English subtitles in Spanish-language scene, saying he did not want to give “English the power over the Spanish.” Actress Rachel Zegler further alienated audiences by shaming Americans who don’t speak Spanish. The mainstream media pushed this one hard, but moviegoers everywhere refused to fall for it. “Everything woke turns to shit,” former President Donald Trump said this year. Nowhere is this more true than in Hollywood, where the public’s rejection of woke movies can be measured in the tens of millions of dollars that studios are losing at the box office. No matter how hard left-wing Hollywood pushes woke-ism - and their allies in the entertainment media insist we like it - the American public isn’t having it anymore, sending a clear and unambiguous message with their wallets. Will Hollywood learn its lesson? Of course not, but that’s their problem and it’s part of the fun. This year, woke Hollywood movies tanked left and right as audiences wary of paying for a social justice lecture decided to stay away.
