It absolutely destroys me that the world did not flock to see this transcendent piece of art. They showed up in droves for LaLaLand (showcasing actors who could neither dance nor sing) but didn't bother to come see this ensemble of masters at the top of their craft. The dancing, singing and acting were all phenomenal. The Bernstein score! The sets! Everything! As others have said, you just want to watch it over and over. I've heard criticism of Ansel Elgort, but I think people just have an ax to grind. The role of Tony calls for boyish wonder, sincerity and tenderness, all of which he had in spades. He was a perfect Tony, regardless of outside issues. I hope the world belatedly wakes up and discovers this masterpiece. The message is powerful and needed now more than ever!

I wholeheartedly disagree with you, for multiple reasons:
There is NO film that has an opening or compares with the first 14 minutes of the original. No film.
Spielberg changed the iconic “Cool” number to just a well choreographed, but nothing special, let alone iconic dance number. No comparison.
My favorite song “Sonewhere” was changed to a solo sung by Rita Moreno and it lacked any sort impact compared to the original. It was a passionate love song in the original. It was just one more Sondheim/Bernstein song in the newer version. Lacked the punch and passion of the ‘61 version.
The ending and emotionally charged ending of the original
Is far superior to the ending in Spielberg film.
In fact, I can’t remember how his ended other than Tony being killed.
People got up and left at the end. When I saw the original in 1961, you could hear people sniffling and so heartfelt and emotional people stayed until the end of the credits. I still feel sadness at the end and I know what’s going to happen.
AND who can forget George Chakiris in his purple shirt and Rita Moreno in her purple dress from “America”?
I remember there being standing ovations at the end of “America” in the theater. In Spielberg’s version, it was one more happy Bernstein song.
I saw it three times and no audience member stood up. Every time I have seen the original, people applaud and/or stand up.

This version felt more authentic, and I loved the richness of each character’s backstory. One thing though is that I wish the prologue had been more like the 1961 version. I just love how drawn out that is with the back and forth chases with Jets/Sharks and the build up of tension - it seems there’s less of that in this version. However, that’s a minor critique. Loved this movie so much.
I particularly loved that scene where Bernardo tells Chino how bossy Maria is. It’s funny because I’m a Latina and it’s almost common knowledge here how girls named Maria around here tend to be bossy, like, my mom is Silvia Maria, and my nieces are Maria Clara and Manuella Maria, they’re ALL really bossy indeed. Maria also does mean rebellious, so it make some sense.

You can compare the two different versions because I believe they serve two different sets of generations and of styles. I hope this updated version will bring in our younger generation to see the fabulous Musicals of Hollywood! Hollywood it is not all about Superhero’s and Gloom/Doom!!

How exciting to hear the legendary New York Philharmonic orchestra on the soundtrack with the dynamic conductor Dudamel the perfect choice to master the dynamic virtuoso writing of Bernstein who was the legendary principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic decades ago....He would be very proud of this much improved rendition of his masterpiece.....( As a timpani and percussion player I was thrilled to notice how the percussion section was enlarged on the recording sessions together with a much larger orchestra) ...He was not happy with the rather underwhelming music production of the the original movie soundtrack......I feel privileged to have attended a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall back in 1962 With Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic in one of his famous ' Lecture concerts for young people ' ....." What is a melody " was the theme...., Mozart , Brahms and ending with a special exciting orchestration of his " Symphonic Dances from West Side Story " !! 👏👏👏😊👍💜
