  • Making charcoal in a large kiln, the last stage before leaving the kiln to chug away until ready, we're about an hour into the burn at this point.
    In this video you can see flares of wood gas burning and how Chris decides when the kiln is ready to be 'shut down'.
    See also www.charcoalburners.co.uk for more information.

    Something about this particular part of the process brings to mind a very old, rudimentary memory. I can tell that this has been done, exactly like this for a very long time. A very old and noble craft indeed. Some things feel good to the soul to witness: this is one of those things for me.
    Thank you for posting this sequence of video.

    Not bad at all. I'm a blacksmith and I suggest keeping 10% volatiles in charcoal. Been thinking of making pine charcoal for some time and the nearest coal shop is too far away. I also hate commercial charcoal, which has no volatiles, which is what we blacksmiths need to get a welding fire.

    Hello. I wish you success. What are the stages of this technique? How can I learn the stages of making this oven? What is the size and number of vents? When should the holes be closed? when to install ventilation pipes; when will the top cover be closed? After how many hours will the cover open? Is there a risk of explosion of the system?
    Is there a detailed explanation where I can find all this? I would appreciate it if you would have the courtesy to reply. thanks

    This clearly demonstrates that the kinds of kilns that burn the wood gas to fire themselves are more efficient. They even put themselves out when done.

      @christophergruenwald5054 Před 5 lety +1

      cliftut smoke is unburned fuel. It’s extremely flammable once it hits an oxygen rich environment. If he would have put any flame to that super heated thick smoke before he dropped the lid, he would have had a fireball.

    I just wish he'll do one important thing. In these modern times, a respirator & protective goggles would be justified.
    Men who did this way back in the past had no choice, respirators had not been invented. But today, get a respirator my friend, world needs people like you.

      Talking about closed loops (😂)We're installing a series of 6 kilns all connected with pyrolysis gas flowing from one to the next using blowers and venturis - its a beautiful thing. Smoke is unburnt fuel and we feel venting pyrolysis gases is a waste.

    To make barbecue charcoal, I use my own dry WOOD on the grill - and when it burns down, the grill is hot - and the charcoal is ready.
    I have NEVER bought barbecue charcoal...

    Looks very complicated. I just dig a pit and control the burn partly with rice husks and then soil. Learnt that where I live in Thailand. I make loads of charcoal for friends and family who use it for everyday cooking. Yes we are in a very rural area.

    How can you justify pumping all that noxious smoke into the atmosphere? Don't tell me it is just water vapor, clearly that is at best only partially the case. Be accountable and take responsibility for pumping a ton of particulate and carbon into our atmosphere. It's very dismaying to see this, don't you realize there is a climate crisis going on? Shame.
