you can also make a retort and burn a fraction of the fuel wood you use to keep the reaction going. The wood being carbonized gives off enough syngas to sustain it's own reaction. A self-fueling gasifier. You can make some moderate modification to your GIANT gasifier and have a self-fueling, clean burning, rocket retort, charcoal maker.

Isn't all the vapor and smoke from charcoal making highly flammable and worth using? And if not wouldn't it be more conscientious to pipe it through a water barrel or another kind of scrubber to attempt to not dump tonnes of crap into the air for no reason?

The greenhouse gasses released when he's making charcoal just replaces the gasses the wood he is burning consumed while it was growing. The tree would eventually die and rot and release the same greenhouse gasses.

Carbon monoxide and -dioxide do not destroy the ozone. You're thinking of Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) with your comment.
It's also important to note that Antartica completely loses the ozone above it EVERY year. Which means that it regenerates completely every year, too.

Why would you make charcoal this way? Dig pit in the ground. Pile wood in it. Start the fire on top. As combustion works its way down the pile, the combustion products shield the charcoal above from further oxidation. When the last wood stops flaming, throw a sheet metal cover on top of the pit. Works like a charm and very little smoke is produced.

I'm guessing this is a commercial endeavor versus for privet use?
If it was for privet use that one load would take some time to consume (1 to 2 months+)?
It looks like he's done this enough that the fire brigade either receives a call from him or they call him to confirm he's processing (I hope the former, not the latter).
I wonder how many cords (lbs) of wood goes in that kiln(?) and the amount of charcoal (% or lbs) he gets out?
Thank-you for the time and keep safe.

To those who think this is bad for enviroment, you are correct. But just know over 20 or 50 years those trees have picked up enough carbon, mixed it with oils and biological materials to form wood. So what these guys are doing is burning off the oils leaving only the carbon behind.
*What they could do to make this more efficient is route the smoke from the top through pipes and and into a box where it will mix with air and back under the fire, making the temparature higher and using the already flammable smoke to further speed up the process. What i think is possible some people have already done i bet, but this is just a waste of very very potential energy. OR they could capture this smoke, concentrate it into a tar by running bubbles through water or something, woh knows? But that smoke going off into the air is doing more harm then the Co2 everybody is crying about. It really isn't bad, becuase that same Co2 will be recaptured by some other trees.*

You could also use the syngas to run a generator and crack water into HHO and store it for future use. Wood vinegar, the liquid residue , is a very valuable agricultural product used in Asia for insecticide and fertilizer. Use this as a template for the general concept. Sure, CFCs contribute to the greenhouse effect. Carbonmonoxide and -dioxide still don't affect the ozone in the slightest bit, though.

migh i enlighten sir that the methane and carbon monoxide gasses that comes out of a woodifyer cannot be stored in compressed containers and the gas is not liquid by making it go throuhg water, it liquifies only through pressure or cooling it.
the woodified gas hoever can run a combustion engine for instance, yet it is not very storeable, i know a way to extract only methane but i am not telling.
