- This is a comprehensive look at this transmission. If you build your transmission similar to this video, then you should have a pretty good unit!

I can't afford to buy new or even used or remanufactured so I'm about to try to rebuild my transmission in my expedition. I'm very thankful for this video and wish me luck.
How’s it going
@@VagrantLoafer I'm still creeping around in 1st and 2nd. My wife got sick and was in the hospital for a while with a chest tube. Money got pretty tight but I just about have my head above water so I'm actually planning on next week either trying to get a used one or doing the rebuild. I'm honestly kinda afraid about just trying the rebuild if I phuck up it might be the card that brings the house down. Sorry for the long winded update. Thanks for checking in tho
Did you really say try??? Lol how did it turn out?
It's actually harder than it looks. I tried it on my Obs Chevy 4l60e ...it took me a week but I did get it! Now I got a 2002 mustang gt now I want to learn this tranny to see if I can tackle this one too. Good luck 🤞..
Me too in my 2002 f 150
Great video!! Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your step-by-step video with all of the upgrade tips. I have been a technician for 35 years, but I don’t typically rebuild my own transmissions. This video was awesome and my transmission in this 2008 F150 shifts like new.
You're very welcome!
The servo clip and spring were made to brake. Great audio I felt like I was right n the shop. I always found you can tell a lot about a person's driving habits when rebuilding the transmission.
Getting a clean 2006 p71 interceptor. already preparing to fix everythings gonna break. Thanks for contributing. keeping this old art alive for a little longer yet.
Don't have a lot of skilled trades in America anymore.
Very detailed teardown. Thank you, sir.
welcome
I really appreciate your videos! Thank you for the work you put into them, they have been very helpful and informative!
You're very welcome!
I'll be putting a master kit in my '04 and this vid has been a life saver! Thank you! Thumbs UP. I'm sure I'll need a few hard parts as well...
welcome
Dude! Great video and thank you for sharing your knowledge and time to put this info out there for us shade tree mechanics.
Welcome
I'm not going to lie it was nice to see you struggle with those snap rings briefly. I find myself struggling with snap rings sometimes to and I always feel like I'm the only one who has trouble with them lol.
But great video man.👍
I am going to find a better way someday. In the mean time, I wanted to show people what we really go through sometimes. We don't just magically get things apart without some effort.
Straight out great Mechanic & teacher.
thank you
Great guide same transmission
Glad it helped
You've got the same OTC trans holding fixture I used on the AOD- 4R70W for years. You should get a set of slide hammers for pulling the pump from the case though.
I have slide hammers, I don't use them for this because it is not necessary.
Great video! Very helpful thank you!!
welcome
Appreciate your video very much but with all due respect, I was taught very young when you do detailed work, ALWAYS HAVE ALOT OF LIGHT...You want your work spot BRIGHT, so you can see it all.
Can't argue with that.
Thank you
Great video. I will subscribe.
Thanks for subbing
This gentleman is damn good! I would let him work on my rig.
Well, thank you very much.
By the way that is a nifty jig you have holding the tranny to your bench that allows you to spin it around.
My 2011 CVPI ran low on ATF and it's been slipping in 1st gear even after topping it up, so watching this to see how feasible it is for me to try and tear it down and fix it. I can clearly see it's beyond what I can do hahaha, thanks for posting this.
welcome
these are the best video i have watched and i thank you for it i fhave a question about my reverse drum and is there a way i could send you a picture of it and maybe you could tell me if i need a new one or not?
mine slammed to a stop while reversing into a parking space, now I have a light scraping noise in first that goes away if I override it into second. Any ideas? Where does the parking pawl engage? Would that have damaged first?
Thanks 🙏
welcome
My trans neutrals going into 4th but ONLY when it gets hot? If/when it does go into 4th it'll Rev a little bit then engage. But even if I drive just a couple miles in city traffic that's enough to make it too hot to shift into 4th
Kobalt tools well built 5 year warranty 3 year on the battery you really can't beat them for the price.
So far mine is still going after 2 to 3 years.
What do you typically charge for a rebuild?
I just rebuilt mt 4r70w transmission and I takes approximately 12-13 qt of oil. My question is. Does that included the qt on the torque converter or do I have to add extra oil to accommodate the oil that goes on the T.C. ? Can anyone please help. Thanks in advance.
this is my reverse drum
Excellent video! My 2013 Expedition has the 4R70W. Currently at 204k and it shifts very smooth considering age and mileage. It's recently developed a chatter while accelerating in overdrive between 40-50 mph. No othere drivablity issues. I've read that the torque convertor clutches may be bad. Also seen a video where a shift kit resolved the issue. Any guidance for repairing this issue would be appreciated. Thanks!
Never used a shift kit to solve any issue in this transmission. However, I just rebuild the transmission with certain modifications.
Where is your shop located ill bring you my transmission for a rebuild lost reverse
Great videos guys, really need better lighting
Hopefully better everything will come in the future.
They have thread that you can use the transmission bolts that bolt into the block just used two of them they have threatened the cover for the bolts the thread into it so you don't have to struggle taking the pump housing off 😎😎😎
You are right. I have two slide hammers for this. However, I never use them. Tapping the nose of the pump is easy with a lead hammer.
20:03 They may not look bad at that moment or as you say "rarely go bad", same thing with the bands 20:45, but since you have it all torn apart might as well replace them regardless, imagine going through all that work of that rebuild and reuse those parts only to have them fail 6 months later and then have to tear it all back down again, that would be a sad day! This is one type of job that I would highly advise a customer not to be cheap about, nor would it be ethical for a reputable shop to do poor workmanship like that, unless they have little pride in their work and/or only giving a very short or no warranty at all.
Hey man. Great video. I have a 2000 F150 4x4 and I have no reverse and only 1 forward gear. Im gonna rebuild with this video. Do you have a parts and tool list that I can get. Im gonna do everything thing you did using all the tools you used.
Thanks in advance.
You need the lip seal tool kit, if you want to install the seal easy. You need the servo tool that presses the servos. This is an old tool. You may not find this around anymore. May have to try to make one.
Great video! I have a 98 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 RWD with transmission issues. It will shift into reverse only when it’s cold started, and also while driving after I reach 20-25mph it seems like it slows down on its own then jerks and revs itself back up to speed. Any idea what it could be?
sounds like engine problem
Update: it’s a. 97 Moutaineer not 98. Ended up replacing whole transmission with a 2001 4r70w and now it’s throwing code (P0750 Solenoid A), Did some research and found out the 98 and newer years are more electronic and the harness pins are located in different spots. Would repining solve this issue, or is it better to change the entire internal Harness of the tranny! Is there anything else needed such as speed sensors, pcm, etc?
On the very first two seconds of the video, if you look at the right side of the transmission you can see that there's like a circle cap to it ..im missing that on my truck and im wondering if anyone knows the part?
If you speak of the circle on the bottom of the bellbousing, older versions had a drain plug in the torque converter and a rubber plug in the bellbousing to access it.
Still around for a reply? Do I need to remove the pan and valve body to swap a sunshell? Got an old version and want to use my newer bad trans for the upgraded components
Hmm, I don't think that you do if you can get the overdrive band out of the way. I can get it out of the way, however, it may take you some time to do it. If you cannot, then you will have to remove the valve body and remove the overdrive servo to get the band out.
Please help i have a 2011 crown vic pi with the extended tail housing (4r75E). I can't find a part number for the o ring that seals the output shaft. The car has a leak through the splines on the driveshaft. I replaced the outer seal but still leaking who can i get parts from tail housing gasket, bushing and o ring? Ford has been useless. Thank You
Did you find what you needed?
Man I wish u was around sc to rebuild my 02 f150 trans. Hard to find good quality with reasonable prices
What they charge down there?
Hi I have a question can the valve body be changed with the transmission in place?
yes
Did you make the tool that compressed the pistons?
No, this is an old tool.
I’ve noticed a lot of transmissions that are bad are dented right where the filter pick up is..
This is where people life the transmission from. So it normally gets dented.
I just rebuild one after everything installed will it be hard to turn do to the bands?
no, the input shaft should not be hard to turn. if the input shaft is hard to turn, then something is not seated right in the transmission. You will have to disassemble and reassemble the transmission.
@@thisisyourtransmission thanks I remove everything it was the reverse drum not sitting right in the sun shield
When my rooster comb is adjusted to neutral, my lever arm is off position and I can’t connect to the shifter cable. I don’t know what to do anymore
maybe you have the lever on backwards.
Where are you guys located? Can a 4r70w be built to handle 500 at the wheel horsepower?
I believe it can be built to handle that power with the right parts. However, this would be a job for a supershop. I do not do high performance builds at the moment.
I have a 4R75W. Neutrals out in third. Thought it was solenoid, tested those. They seems fine when 12v was applied. Pulled the entire thing apart hoping to find something wrong. All the clutch packs look fine, valve body looks fine after tear down. I literally cannot find anything wrong. Ideas ?
1) bad shift solenoids 2) check the overdrive servo snap ring. if it is broken a piece of it normally is in the valvebody sticking a valve. 3) direct clutch drum splines can be stripped.
@@thisisyourtransmission would a bad solenoid throw a code ? I had no transmission codes on a matco computer
@@supersawyer358 Not all the time. I have had bad solenoids on this transmission that did not set codes. Also, is it 3rd gear of 4th gear that is not catching.
@@thisisyourtransmission yes no 3rd gear. It neutrals out. Then when I turn the OD switch off 2nd kicks back in.
@@supersawyer358 3rd gear is not the problem, 4th gear is the problem. OD is 4th gear. Turn OD off, it goes to 3rd gear. Look for the things I told you.
Hey brother if you got a minute ive got a question, I have an 07 Ford F150 with the 75E. It shofts into drive fine and when i look under and my wife shifts from reverse to drive i can see the drive shaft turn, however whenever we try to give it some throttle the truck refuses to move. Im a little younger and havent learned much about the transmission and was wondering your input on trouble shooting steps and likely causes
Did you fix your problem?
@thisisyourtransmission Hopefully. Took the trans apart and the clutches were all shiny ground to hell. No abrasive material left on them
@@christianjordan426 did you fix the transmission?
@@thisisyourtransmission I'm reassembling the truck now. Haven't gotten around to testing it yet
Oring seal missing on the selector shaft? @16:23
No, there is no oring there. That groove is for the pin that will hold the shaft in. Keep watching
start a 14:52
Question???
Best video I've found. Do you help people for a fee? Of can you help me??? Lol
I have a 1991 ford econoline needs tranny rebuild ..need advice
Truthfully, I don't really have time because we are so busy in the shop, and I am always occupied. Even making videos are hard because they slow me down. One day, I will be free enough to do much more, I hope.
Is this a 1989 Ford F150 XLT Lariat 5.0 4wd transmission? Or similar? I need to rebuild mine and my 90 Bronco
No, this is a 2000 or newer transmission
@@thisisyourtransmission thank you
Where you get the piston compressor tool 🤔
I got this from my former boss. Had it for umpteen years.
Do you have a list of all the parts for the 4r75e rebuild. like a list of the upgrades and the kit to go with it?
This is an undertaking at the moment. I will probably make a short video for the parts that I use in the future.
@@thisisyourtransmission I appreciate it... My 2012 E-150 had bearing failure between the sun gear and planetary at 43k ... So I have no faith in an OEM replacement and no money for the cost of a reman or shop built. I know I'm capable but I only want to do it once... Your videos are rock solid, you can tell with every move of your hands you know this stuff backwards and forwards. know it's time consuming and you could be making money with that time.
Instead of getting rebuild one get one from autozone almost same price and has a warranty on it.
Autozone buys some transmission from us. So, you may be getting one from a rebuilder anyway.
@@thisisyourtransmission so what is the difference between remanucatured vs rebuilt
@@thisisyourtransmission Also autozone gives 3 year warranty but you guys give one 1. Interesting…
Over a dip and stopped,,,1gear
WHERE is the rebuild with upgrades?
Gloves man, use them
I have a 99 4r70w will a4r75 interchange, 4x4
What year 4r75w?
@@thisisyourtransmission 99
@@stacymelton6859 A 4r75w will not be a 99
@@thisisyourtransmission so it will not for a 99 model with a 4r70w or work that is
What is your contact info? I would like to have you rebuild one of these for me to. It's in a 1999 E-350. Thanks.
Where are you located?
@@thisisyourtransmission I'm in Md. I can pay for freight if its needed to have a already built one shipped or i could travel if your no over 13 hours or so away.
@@handyman3320 You want to travel to ohio?
@@thisisyourtransmission Ohio doesn't sound too bad, I can do that. How long does it take you to build one of these? It's in a short stepvan.
@@thisisyourtransmission 1999 E-350. I just looked and I think I have a 4R100 not this trans. I still want it rebuilt with Heavy Duty components and shift kit.
Please use gloves. I doubt dirty ATF is very good to have absorbing into your skin. Doesn't smell good either.
You are right. I try
Great video! Very helpful thank you!!
