- This second-generation Hyundai Genesis Coupe features the evolution of Hyundai's four-cylinder engine, itself a derivative of Mitsubishi's 4G63 "Evo" engine. To me he seemed relaxed enough to enjoy the drive and talk about his car. Being somewhat nervous makes sense, you are handing the keys of your car to a guy you've never met before who's gonna drive on mountain roads. I enjoyed this video.

I've heard the rev hang is actually due to the dual mass flywheel. With a single mass flywheel and a healthy tune the rev/response can be drastically enhanced.
Super underrated as Matt said, I love mine! Although, they do have a few notorious issues.

Never understood why people can't appreciate all types of fun cars. It doesn't mean you Mustang or Camaro, 370z ect. are bad. There are just different types of fun vehicles. I like any fast car and appreciate they exist. Let's try to appreciate and hate less. Enthusiasts are the minority
Blake Swan me personally, I appreciate all cars (except the PT Cruiser (loser)). But I will admit there are some cars/brands that I don't like, but that's not to say I don't appreciate them as a car/brand. Just my view and two sense on the subject

A kid at my school had one exactly like this, except the wheels were plasti dipped, where as I own a 3.8 track. I never did get to test drive the 2.0t R-Spec, however, I did test drive a 2.0T base and it was a fun little car! Throw in the R-Spec goodies, and you're good to go!

You can fix that rev hang by disconnecting a connector at the top of the clutch pedal. It disables the shift indicator and cruise control though, so you might wanna install a switch if you use the cruise. The Velosters have the same issue and its the same fix.
Just watching old videos of Gennies coz I miss mine (stored for the winter.) It's true that these cars are so underrated and very fun to drive.

These cars are awesome, my girlfriend has one for a daily. I am extremely jealous of how her exhaust sounds on her 3.8 compared to my 350Z's. If you like crackling and popping, this car will do it.
my cousin got his tuned at a shop in Pennsylvania and it added 60 more horsepower to the wheels...this suckered is quick now...scary

somebody should have told this kid about the switch by the clutch that you can pull out. it instantly takes out %50 of the rev hang!

run your hand up along side the clutch pedal, feel for a switch that you can pull out. you have to be out of the seat in order to reach it. you can also research this online

Shame is there wont be another Genesis coupe since they are gearing more towards a luxury market. My wife took her 2.0t too the dealer and the sells man said the new one will be in the mid 40k market and it wont be like the genesis coupe but there will be a 2 door.

The genesis 2.0t engine is a theta engine entirely made and designed by hyundai. the chrysler/mitsu motor is based on the theta engine and is actually a joint venture with hyundai chrysler and mitsu to produce 4 cylinder engines aka world engine which have some differences between each other !
the sprintbooster removes the rev hang and awakens the throttle makesva huge difference
LOL my 2013 white R-Spec's steering wheel volume switch broke too! I think "volume up" went out around 35k and "volume down" just kicked the bucket at 55k.

The first gen 2.0's should have had 270 out of the box when they first launched. 200 was really underwhelming for the chassis and you really didn't get any sensation that it was turbocharged either.
The 2nd gen coupe should of had their V8 in it that would of been a winner big time.
Matt is a really cool guy, so genuine and just really likable. Keep the videos coming, I need them to de-stress after dealing with annoying clients!
They do a 1:1 throttle mapping tune, but it disables cruise control. I'm sure that's fine for most people, but I'm disabled so the hand controls kill my arm on long drives without cruise control. It also helps if you get the BOV kit that puts it right in front of the throttle body instead of on the turbo outlet. The ECU keeps the plate open until the pressure is out of the loop, which seems to happen faster if the BOV is right in front of the throttle body.

That's a nice car for any guy, "kid" or not. With just the right amount of power for actually enjoying driving tight, twisty roads. Don't worry about the "oh well my family sedan has more hp" comments. Because they drive a family sedan lmao.

These cars intrigue me a lot since they first came out. This is what Nissan should be doing with the Z, having a Turbo Charged or a High displacement version. I was considering this RS Turbo or the 3.8 over the 370Z
Having owned one (and stupidly caused the engine to seize) I can say that his sentiment is exactly correct: It's just fun to drive. Has a solid amount of power that can't be scoffed at, and although the shifter is a bit clunky in the actual shifting, the knob and stick are extremely response and have a strong "advanced tech" feel to them that I highly enjoy.
Just remember that reverse is left and forward, not to the right!
My wife used to have that same engine in her 2.0t sonata.. it really ripped for a cheap commuter car.. I can imagine the rear wheel drive/2dr version is a blast.. That motor has tons of torque.. Her car would get 32 mpg on the highway if you stayed out of boost.. yet bust the ass off a stock 4.6 gt mustang from a roll.. Three times in a row!! lol
I almost spit my drink out when Matt said "usable back seats." I love the genesis coupe but rear headroom is non-existent.

TheSmokingTire. The gen coupe engine is a derivative of the Mitsu 4B11T engine. Not the 4G63. The Tiburon Beta II is the derivative of the 4G63

The engine is related to the 4B11 from the Evo X, as well as the 2.4 from the Calibur SRT4. Old Hyundai's had actual 4G63's just with a valve cover that said Hyundai.
The Calibur motor was a world engine .

A friend of mine had a blue first generation R-Spec. It was fun. I never drove it bu he drove me around and I loved it.
And remember, that had over 60 fewer horsepower than this one!

drove the Genesis coupes around road Atlanta with skip barber ... back to back with the 991.1 Carrera I still enjoyed it and some of the guys actually PREFERRED the Hyundai to the pcar.

That picture he has is not a 2013. The 2013 has different wheels, tail lights, headlights, and front bumper.
I had the rev hang in both the 1st gen 2.0t and the 2nd gen 3.8 rspec. Kinda strange when you pull up to a stop light and the rpms are some what stuck at 2k+ revs for a few seconds. It werid but other that that hats off to Hyundai. As Matt said its "the high-end of the low-end" of cars in its class. lol
The rattle on the shifter is the little glass/plastic lens on the shifter that covers the h pattern. Hyundai will replace the shifter for free to the updated one.
Daniel Deandrade It was actually the plastic piece between the boot and the knob, I just removed it and the rattle is gone.
How come you never complained about the rev hang in the Fiesta ST? I can't stand it, worst I've experienced in the 9-10 cars I've owned or whatever car I've ever driven for that matter with a stick

Rev hang can always be taken out by tuning. Lots of the cars from like 2007 and up have it for emissions. It's kinda stupid really because it's very easy to get around if you slip the clutch and the shift will be really smooth.
hey Matt, just want to correct your video description. the turbo 4s in the 2.0T Genesis is NOT a derivative of the 4g63. Although it shares some similar features, it was based off a platform created by Hyundai, Chrysler and Mitsubishi which they each made their own version of.
So this or a 370Z as I think that may be its closest comparison?

The motors in the Gen Coupe 2.0's ARE NOT derivatives of the EVO engines. People need to stop passing on misinformation. So many original Gen 2.0 owners bought into that crap, and were surely disappointed when they found out the engines are vastly different.
