  • Sanibel Island in Southwest florida is an incredible place for shelling, in fact it is easily one of the best beaches to collect seashells. Sanibel is one of many barrier islands that amase TONS of seashells on their beaches. Captiva island sits right alongside Sanibel and is a slightly better beach to find shells, but you can drive to Sanibel whereas you need a boat for Captiva and Sanibel is just as good in many aspects.
Currents can be very dangerous at Blind Pass Beach so be mindful of which beach you are at. Blind Pass Beach sits at a river mouth and is known for it's extremely dangerous current when the tide is moving. Here I managed to snorkel during slack-tide at high tide, but as the tide began to go out I could not swim against it and had to return to shore.
Similar to Captiva Island the seashell collecting is very easy for all ages, with the beach being nearly entirely made up of shells. With such an abundance of shells easily at hand on shore there really is no need for a snorkel at Blind Pass Beach. Bring your own shade because this beach is very exposed and bring a bucket because there are thousands of shells. But be mindful because it is illegal and unethical to collect a shell with something living inside of it. Don't kill an animal for its shell.

Aww thanks. Still learning a lot about making music and it’s pretty fun and satisfying to create. And yeah, was just at sanibel a couple weeks ago. Still great shelling!

The southeast Florida beaches are much clearer for snorkeling depending where you go

If you have time you might want to consider a trip with Fossil Recovery. It’s a bit south of sanibel but not terribly far. They’ll take you to a few fossil beds with a focus on shark teeth, but there’s a ton more than that out there (we even found mastodon teeth). I posted a video on it a few weeks ago if you’re interested. And I really do recommend it. 🤠
