- Lesson on Liver Enzymes, Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) vs Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), “Transaminitis”, and Causes of Elevations. One is more specific to the liver than the other, and one has a shorter half life than the other, allowing analysis of how long liver damage may have been occurring. In this lesson, we discuss both AST and ALT, their functions, their half life, organs in which they are located, and causes of elevations in both AST and ALT.

Thank you for the overview.
excellent explanation!!! this has a very nice flow to it and clearly explains its clinical applications. I appreciate your post! Keep up the superb work!
This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "liver diseases and disorders" for a while now, and I think this has helped. So helpful! Thank you!
Btw I love your focus on the chemistry and mechanism behind the pathophysiology. Excellent attention for detail!
I had elevated liver enzymes and fortunately my nurse practitioner ordered an ultrasound which eventually led me to being diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. Fortunately it was operable and discovered early which is the only chance for a cure.
i’m worried that I may have the same condition and my doctor is overlooking it. my ast is in the 400s and alt is in the 200s. should i be concerned?
@@ABCTutorialz based on your profile picture, I'm making the assumption that you have traveled outside of the U.S. for work/service or you have been outside of the U.S. for leisure? If so, you most likely were at increased risk for contracting a Hepatitis virus. However, it should be noted that hepatitis A, B and C are on the rise in the united states as well. Best to get checked for hepatitis antibodies+antigens first and if those are clear, talk to your Dr about other possible causes. Elevated liver enzymes are no joke... Great presentation! Very informative, well structured and easy to understand. Have you done a video on fatty liver disease? Thank you!
Hi there! Yes, I have a few lessons on fatty liver disease - please check them out on my channel :)
It is important to note that elevated levels of AST and ALT can also be due to strenuous exercise. This is what happened to me after weightlifting for the first time. I just happened to have blood work done the day after I exercised. Anyways, there’s a whole study done on it online and you can read about it.

Laboratory studies found: potassium concentration in blood plasma-5,5 mmol/l (norm - 3,5-5,0 mmol/l), the concentration of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) - 80 IU/l (norm - 10-30 IU/l), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) - 40 IU/l (norm - 7-40 IU / l), also myoglobin was found in urine.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to determine the type of affected cells according to this analysis?
2. What does the increase in potassium and transaminases mean?
3. What additional methods of diagnostics are required?

What do low AST and ALT results indicate? Clearly it's a good thing but what specifically does it mean, if anything? In my case the AST/ALT were 8 and 17, respectively.
Means your live is operating at optimal levels and you most certainly dont have fatty liver disease.
What about skeletal muscle damage leading to Rhabdomyolysis? Breakdown of muscle tissue should also present as AST, as skeleton muscles do produce leak that into the blood when damaged
Just started working out recently and taking protein shakes, my ALT liver is 39 which i heard is a little high. Does working out and taking supplements have to do with it being high?
I’m not certified or anything but it can be due to the environment pollutants, toxins from food, certain food and supplements but if you’ve ever had Covid you might have them a bit elevated….

I was trying to lose weight (I also do cardio and lift weights) and I think I cut way too many calories. I developed lightheadedness and also a debilitating fatigue especially after one evening when I had 2 beers and 3 shots of tequila. Bad idea to drink when you are short on calories. The blood test showed ATL 100, AST 44. After binge eating for 10 days, I feel absolutely normal and again full of energy (although I gained 5 pounds). Will do another test in 3 weeks. Does the 1.7 alone suggest that it isn't something like cancer, cirrosis etc, or is it impossible to tell without the ASAT level?

My ast is72 and alt is 94 how bad is my liver
Can taking iron supplements cause a high ALT? I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few years ago. I was told to take iron supplements as my ferritin level was really low at 9. After a year on a gluten free diet, my follow up endoscopy was cancelled 3 times due to COVID. I asked to have my nutrient levels checked but the doctor said there was no need to. So, I kept taking iron supplements as I didn't know what my ferritin level was. Finally, about a month ago, I got my endoscopy and blood work. It showed that my ferritin level jumped to 323 in 2 years and my ALT rose to 116. The other liver enzyme levels were normal. My doctor hasn't followed up with me yet so I was wondering if these iron supplements were the cause? I've stopped taking iron supplements since I found out the results of my bloodwork. Thanks.
Hi there ! Did you find the answer of your question! Can you share your experience please? Thanks
Dose the iron supplements elevate liver enzymes?
@@alilana3045 That is what my doctor told me. He said iron supplements, too many carbs, and stress along with infections can create high liver enzymes if excessive alcohol consumption is ruled out as a cause.
Upon the doctor's suggestion, I've reduced my carb consumption and take very few iron supplements. I also now drink black coffee and green tea as they are supposed to cleanse your liver and bring down the ALT levels. Unfortunately, on my last blood tests, they are still high. My guess is that it's the gluten free food that's causing the elevated levels. On top of that, when I don't take iron supplements, I quickly feel tired and run down very easily.

@@lightmoe2480 but its true, supplements can actually make those levels, it happened to me too. my doctor told me... supplements damages our liver too, especially if the minerals included are more than six. you can actually have liver failure just from taking too much supplements. people in the comments here are actually kind enough to share experiences. and i learned that i can get my vitamins through food alone, healthy eating.
What about ALP ?
I have an AST of 55 and an ALT of 71. I carry my weight in the middle and am probably 30 pounds over weight. I had also been on a round of two separate antibiotics prescribed by a dentist. Amoxicillan and Metroidazole and had quit taken them a week before the test. I was just kind of shocked, because this was just routine blood work and it has always been normal. I am getting a Hepatic Function Panel next week and we will see if my numbers have come down. I have watched what I have eaten for the most part the last 6 weeks and am down 10 pounds. I guess anything might help.
Excessive fructose (sugar) intake causes weight gain and non-alcoholic fatty liver. For some people their safe daily sugar intake can be as low 20 grams. Apparently over half of Americans have the early stages of this and it is completely reversible by reducing sugar and carb intake. ALT should then reduce in future tests. Happened to me and I wasn't even overweight. Just a diet change and ALT dropped back to normal in only a few months. AST could be temporary due to medications or from resistance training for anyone exercising.

@@RobinJohnson heineken 0.0 is indeed the best alcohol free beer in my opinion, almost a placebo. I scored 71 ALT, doc not worried, but I will lower it by having 3 days off, (I hope)
Your explanation is amazing. Thank you very much.
I am 38 years old and my weight is 74kg. My ALT is 41.3 and AST is 36.6. Is there any problem? Thank you.

Less than a month ago my ast was 760 and ALT was 1,629. Negative for hepatitis, hemochromatosis, and ultrasound and ct scan looked good. My Ast is now 142 and alt 370. Still don't know what is going on or what happened? Im 40, good shape, eat fairly healthy, don't Anyone have a hypothesis?
any update.?
@@babalsheek79 Yeah I feel normal again. Went to gi doctor and he said I had hepatitis even though I tested negative initially. He said I still could have had it despite testing negative. Anyway I go back to see him in August for a follow up. He had me do a lot of bloodwork to test for various things so we will go over that. All the gi drs in my area had a one year wait time to get an appointment so I ended going out of town and got bloodwork at a different hospital and never saw the results of my bloodwork. But he said it was probably hepatitis and then it was something my body would probably get rid of on its own. And it already had, by the time I saw him I was feeling normal again. Took around 6 weeks total to feel normal again. No idea how I got it
About a month ago my alt was 1694 and my ast was 1047. I felt fine. It was found on routine labs. I was admitted to hospital had a bunch of tests everything negative including ultrasound and biopsy Highest my alt got to was 2028. 2 weeks ago alt was down to 1166 and ast 604. During that time my bilirubin hit 11.8 - yes I was yellow. I constantly feel like I have the flu, no appetite, very tired I cry a lot. Tomorrow another round of labs. Will I ever feel better?
@@AR-fx1uy I hope you feel better soon. Atleast it seems like your numbers are going in the right direction. You have had similar symptoms that I had. It really messed my appetite up. I drink coffee everyday and I had to stop drinking because I just couldn't do it. I'd eat too much for lunch and then couldn't eat anything for dinner. I ended up eating a lot of small snacks and it seemed to help. Bananas, pretzels, apples. Also felt better if I was standing up, walking around after I ate . It was awful, and you start thinking and I'm ever gonna just feel normal again. How long am I going to feel like this and will it ever going away. But I got better, it just took a while. Good luck to you, hope you feel better
@@mikewright534 thank you because right now I don’t feel like I’ll ever get better. It’s been a little over a month now. I could only tolerate fruit. The thought of veggies is disgusting to me although tonight I will try a salad since my son is making it. I’ve lost 10 lbs this past month. My husband makes me walk around the block every day but I’m so weak. Dr told me to get ensure clear so I could get my nutrients. That stuff is gross, too sweet but I do feel better if I can drink it. Did you have a nasty taste in your mouth or a white tongue? Just curious. Thanks
