  • Gastroparesis (Stomach Paralysis) | Causes and Risk Factors, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
Gastroparesis literally means “stomach paralysis” or “stomach weakness”, and involves delayed gastric emptying. There are many causes of gastroparesis (including idiopathic, diabetic gastroparesis, post-viral gastroparesis, medication-induced etc.), and there are characteristic symptoms we see with this condition. In this lesson, we discuss risk factors and causes of gastroparesis, along with clinical features, diagnostic methods and treatments for gastroparesis.

I've been dealing with these symptoms for four years now, since I was thirteen. I used to eat mountains but now I'm scared of eating a pebble, the pain is as sharp as a blade and as furious as flames. I've never vomited, so I haven't been loosing weight, I was accually gaining weight up until this past November when my smell and taste was so warped I couldn't eat. I went from 190lbs to 168lbs within a month, but I believe I'm slowly gaining back. The nausea is absolutely unbearable and the heart burn and constipation is just dreadful. There are days were the pain is somewhat manageable, other days, I don't even want to wake up. I'm young, but I'm always tired, always sick feeling, always just miserable. I see a gastroenterologist tomorrow, I'm hoping I can get help.

Figured I’d share my experience of GP with everyone. I’m in my mid twenties, not diabetic, no known neuropathy. No previous history of gastric problems until late March a few months ago. I started noticing foods I had normally eaten with no issues started causing bloating, abdominal pain/discomfort etc. It was seemingly intermittent in early March. I had days with no perceived issues and then as the month progressed, it became daily acid reflux, daily loss of appetite, early satiety nausea etc. Not much in the vomiting however. But as time went on to June now, I was put on omeprazole for the reflux which helped tremendously. However, as a result, I wonder if my stomach acid is TOO low thereby hindering my digestion, slowing it down to a crawl. After all, I had been on 40 mg omeprazole for 8 weeks. Just recently cut that dose in half. But what has helped me so far is to eat small portions for meals. I try to eat 5-6 small meals that add up to around 1,500-1700 calories (I’m a 170 lb male). In addition, I’m getting a gastric emptying study done on Friday to see the severity of my gastroparesis- or to even rule it out. My dr is also putting me on mirtazipine because I struggle to sleep at night. I have abdominal pain/discomfort that can last for hours at night. Looking into gas x. Have seen good things about mirtazipine so hopefully that will help improve my symptoms considerably. But this condition is brutal. Your relationship with food changes, your daily outlook changes, your mental health can suffer. You feel as though you’re being punished for just trying to survive and get your body the nutrition it needs.

Here it is September and I’m continuing to torture myself with “real” food. The whole “lifetime” thing of liquids/puréed food is so not appealing. Then neither is this pain. Just a few minutes ago I had symptoms of upper stomach cramps. Trying to self diagnose, I ate some chewy candies (Snickers, Milky Way, etc..Halloween stuff), about 10 minutes before this happened. My abdomen area felt very congested and stiff, I could not breath normally.I thought I would have to get medical help. Thinking that the candies were stuck in the path going to the stomach, I drank some hot water and kept breathing deeply and moving my arms. Finally after finishing the cup of hot water, the congestion went away. Whew, I was glad. But now I am wondering if this is going to happen again. I had a medical checkup for my heart meds a couple of weeks ago, and it did not show a diabetic condition. Then I looked up this video that may be of help.

We perform upper endoscopy followed if clinically indicated by computed tomography/magnetic resonance enterography to exclude mechanical obstruction or mucosal disease as a cause of impaired gastric emptying. I think I had it once temporarily when I was traveling with family. On the way back on a bus I was starting to feel nauseous, and suspected that it was car sickness (even though I've never experienced it beforehand). I didn't think much of it because it was bearable and drank some iced tea. I got full really quickly so I stopped drinking it. A few hours later I still felt that the drink was still in my stomach somehow. Even worse, I had to sit through this an entire night trying to force myself to sleep in discomfort. It was still in me next morning. And once the bus came to our destination I tried to get up, but once I moved I immediately felt like I needed to vomit. So I grabbed the bag nearest to me and let some of it out. I started to drool out a lot of sour saliva rapidly still feeling some of the sickening drink in me. So I went to the back of the bus with the bag still drooling a lot. My vomit clearly looked yellow like the iced tea I drank with nothing else mixed in somehow (as I remember it, I'm not sure if there was anything else in it). But even after all of that I didn't feel hungry at all. I actually felt so full to the point that if I ate a single bite of food the whole process would happen again. So I didn't feel like eating for many days. But I felt like I was getting weaker so I gave in to eating some food even though I didn't feel like it a day and a half later. My family were concerned but felt like it was car sickness or food poisoning; but I don't think that would make a drink stay sergeant in my stomach overnight sitting in a bus of all things. Plus I had really bad dihheria for more than a week with some nausea on the side. It was not a fun vacation I tell you. But thankfully those nightmarish symptoms got away after a while and returned to my daily life. But I realized that I get full more easily than before the incident happened, but didn't feel nauseous or sour drool coming out of my mouth so I didn't think much of it. But now I'm starting to feel discomfort after eating almost a year later. I told one of my parents, but thought it's just food poisoning again, but I suspect it's this. I want to get tested but I don't think my parents will let me because medical care where I live is really expensive so I don't know what to do.

You didn't mention how it is found in people with Ehler's Danlos Syndrome a lot.
That's what I have. For me, the motility is always slow but then it flares up. I know I'm about to have an attack (for want of a better word) when I begin to burp sulphuric smelling burps. Now when I say burp, these burps last for 10 seconds long. Then farts just as long. My whole stomach fills until it feels like it will split, with air and I have to keep releasing it. This goes on for hours and hours. Finally, I'll feel sick and I will throw up and have diarrhoea and the same thing comes out of my mouth as what comes out the other end. A rancid brown sludge of fermented rotten food. My body keeps expelling this for hours because the food that was sitting fermenting in stomach acid has become poison and the body needs to get it out. Then I'm afraid to eat for a day after and take it easy. Is anyone else's like this? The flares come and go but the slow motility is always an issue.

I’ve had this for 4 years now, but didn’t know what it was. For me the worst is stomachaches, belching, headaches and tiredness. Because the food is not digested fast enough, it proceeds to small and large intestines where it ferments, causing vad dysbiosis (symptom gas). The overgrowth of bad bacteria destroys the colon lining mucous and I got leaky gut, food particles get into bloodstream which causes immune response amd inflammation. This caused histamine release and intolerance with bad headches and sleep disturbances. One thing led to another. With dietary changes I feel so much better now I can even exercise again.

I only use the Reglan tiny pieces at a time. Also altods peppermints help really well. I hope this helps. B12 is very low with this disease, the stomach lining gets thin. I will snack right up to bedtime (11)and I know I'm eating too much, but I can't seem to be satisfied. I only eat a few bites of something and then a few bites of something else right up to bedtime. As a result, I will be losing it all either in the night or after breakfast. And I can tell my stomach isn't working- no hunger pains to speak of unless it's been over 12 hours since I ate. Everything causes indigestion or swelling, bloating, and acid reflux. It does help to stay hydrated, walk a mile every day and NOT eat too much.

I was recently diagnosed with this one week ago. They don’t know why, No diseases, ekg for heart is good, blood panels came back fine. Only thing I can think of is ibuprofen I take for headaches. Anyway, until I can get into the gastro Dr. In a couple of weeks, following the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. White bread only, low fiber everything. If u have veggies, use frozen or canning don’t eat them raw as it’ll be way too rough on your stomach. I also use an ice pack or heating pad on top part of my stomach after eating to get blood flow going better . It always hurts after I eat now so this is what helps & make sure u take walks after eating, that helps as well.

I'm fairly certain the cause of my gastroparesis is having to be on proton pump inhibitors. The reason I think this is because when I wasn't on them, I could digest food normally, and this isn't the first time I've needed to take PPIs. Years ago I had to and the same problem occurred, then when I stopped them, it cleared up. Now I'm on them again and gastroparesis returned. Unfortunately, I need to be on PPIs due to GERD and erosive gastritis. Both of those can cause far more damage if left uncontrolled, so I need to put up with my stomach not emptying efficiently.

She is diabetic as well and struggles as none of anti sickness medications work for her. she has boughts of sickness that last for weeks and sometimes we need to go to hospital for dehydration so she can be on a drip as she cant keep water down.
