ABANDONED AIRPLANES

- Hell on Earth / earthwillburn and Explores with Kurt / @kurtvanlife had the pleasure of me showing them some decent parts of Liverpool this old airport being one of them, it was amazing getting up so close to the aircraft and even a look in a couple of them. For some reason there is a part of my video missing and I dont know where its gone :( The video isnt that long but i hope you enjoy what I did manage to find.
The History
Liverpool is one of the UK's oldest operational airports, first thought of as an idea in 1928 with scheduled flights commencing in 1930 and an 'official' opening ceremony some 3 years later on 1st July 1933.
In the early 1930s, the airport had operated from a converted farmhouse which acted both as terminal building and- with the assistance of an improvised superstructure added to an attic window- as control tower.
Major changes took place in the late 1930s following the growth in passenger traffic through Liverpool, particularly on flights across the Irish Sea, when the handsome dedicated passenger terminal and new aircraft hangars were built.
A further, longer, runway was added in 1966. A new modern passenger terminal was opened in 1986 and the 1930’s building was renovated and expanded to become first the Marriott Liverpool South Hotel and now the Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport Hotel, whilst the original hangars were converted into a leisure centre. A new terminal building and control tower were added in 2002 and further expansion continues to the present day.
In 2002, Speke Airport was renamed and 'rebranded' Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The new logo included the famous self portrait drawing by John Lennon and a quote from Imagine, “above us only sky”.
Such an awesome place, loved the firetruck, that would be so cool to take off roading. Ah Kurt's head, poor chap. Love the way you say cockpit, your accent is so cool. Shame you lost a bit of footage, damn digital technology. Still a superb video as always Tracy 👍

The plane you asked if it was a fighter jet is a Gloster Meteor that first flew in 1944 and was produced until 1955. It flew at up to 600 mph and almost 4,000 were built. Great video 👍!

Surely that place could be turned into some sort of museum and the planes either restored or just left as they are , it would be of great interest to many

Graham/Tracy if you follow Speke Aerodrome Heritage Group on FB they give updates on the restoration of the aircraft. The big one on its belly is an old Britannia and it was abandoned by its owner years ago.
Its a hotel, the planes aren’t abandoned, the jetstream is a flight simulator, theres people working on them every weekend

😂 sorry, had to poke a little fun at that one. Kurt's head must be made of metal with hair on top. The noise his head made against the plane was immense 🤣

Cool fighter jet at 3.14 Tracey. I used to hang out at an airfield whilst my dad jumped out of the planes. It was very exciting. A different explore for you. Good though seeing inside the craft. All the best. Mark
