I switched between the Knicks/ Pacers game and this game just to see CC and see what the hype was all about.
CC definitely has skills, but the problem is still the WNBA style of basketball. It is indeed like watching a HS game - passing, shooting and lots of layups. Nowhere near as exciting as the NBA! This problem can’t be solved by throwing money at it.
As a result, all the hype that the stars had in college will fizzle out during the WNBA season. It is what it is.

No one on the team had a chance to do better, and when they did get the ball they did much better. Caitlin's stat line was 20 pts, 3 assits and 10 turnover with a 41% usage rate. That translated to a 100% usage rate (if only she finished posessions) as 50 pts, 7.5 assists with 25 turnovers as the Fever's final box score. She had a total shi$$er of a game no matter how much lip stick you want to slather on that hog of a game.

20 points against the best defense in the league, in her first regular season game. Hardly disappointing. She's averaging 16.5 pts in the three games so far. Only disappointing because foolish people expect her to dominate the WNBBA in her first season. A ridiculous thought.

OK, she had a stat line of 20 pts, 3 assits, 0 rebounds, 10 turnovers with a usage rate of 41% (for context Labron's usage rate is 31.2, Curry's career high is around 30%). That extrapolates to a full game if only she ends posessions (100% usage rate) to 50 pts, 7 assists and 25 turnovers total box score for the Fever. You could say rookies going to do rookie stuff but if you're going to demand a higher usage rate than anyone in the NBA or WNBA Hall of Fame or all star by that a wide margin then you don't 'my bad' games.

@@colpul2103 - I dont think she is DEMANDING higher usage ratings -- what do you mean by that? ... RE: CC and Fever's last game and her usage rating (their first of the season: ) ... I was bummed that CC's TOs negated her shooting, which wasn't great either. But sadly, it was the most points of the team, as well as her having the most assists -- just three tho on her end too. I looked at all her stats and all her other teammates this morning. They were doing nothing, leaving the rookie out there in deep water with no life raft. As ESPN's Andraya Carter noted, CC's Usage Percentage was the same as her average in college -- which shouldn't be on a professional team ... None of them had many assists - and CC had the most of that too, not just the most points. I'm not sure what a rookie (even a 1st round draft pick) is supposed to do when her fellow veteran teammates are doing nothing -- per their stats. What happened to them? We sure keep hearing everything CC did wrong as if she played by herself in some sort of air bubble with the other team . ... ... What happened to the other players that I was excited about - like AB, and I kept hearing Kelsey Mitchell was going to take some of the heat off of CC.

@@marceybull First off she's the point guard, her usage rate is not thrust on her that is nonsense.
Secondly, no her team played better offense without her. Her 41% usage extrapolates to a Fever full game total of 50pts, (and 25 turnovers). The rest of the team had 51 pts with a 59% usage rate. Or, 85 pts. Caitlin shoots 50 points over 40 minutes of play vs 85 points over 40 minutes of play.... That loss was mostly on her not her team or teammates. She needs to move to 2nd or shooting guard because she is not a WNBA level point guard.

  • @jihyotwice3159

Just remember that CC was the only rookie to be named a starter and play significant minutes (20+). Not even the other picks had a more crucial role than CC. The gap between CC and the whole other rookies is like heaven and earth.
They have already named CC ROTY just based upon the facts above and ranked 3rd in MVP (which is kinda stupid). It doesn't matter if CC got drafted by the worse team (which is not true, just look at the win loss records). You can't get those stats if you are being double and triple teamed. In fact, Indiana Fever almost made it into the playoffs.
Also, don't forget that CC played against the number one defense team and started the game at SG. This significantly eliminated her other skills in passing and running the transition. CC was visibly uncomfortable as she was constantly hammered while getting 2 quick fouls in the first quarter. Also, 20 points isn't something to laugh at against top defense team.

It's now Friday. The Fever 'Home opener' is history and let's just say the Fever has a lot to do to measure up against the top WNBA teams. After watching them for two games the one thing that is glaringly obvious, CC physically seems like a kid matched up against very strong veteran players. The scoring touch will eventually show up but she is going to be knocked around like a rag doll. Plays will have to be set up for her so she doesn't run around without direction. First game, 20 points and ends up 6th in the record book. As for turnovers even her teammates were turning the ball over. AB gets in foul trouble early on and is clunky on the court. She needs to work on conditioning. CC played soccer and track before focusing just on basketball. She also just came off her last college season so she is in condition. She expects to be hit hard and knows there's a target on her back. Double and triple guarded but still scored 20 points. If the open teammates were able to handle CC passing off to them when she's tied up they would score more. CC likes to assist teammates with getting baskets. Oh yeah then she has a coach that told her to lay off the 3's and do long 2's instead. In other words don't play like Caitlin Clark I want you to be mediocre. Don't shine to much. I'm sure she would love nothing better than be treated as a regular WNBA rookie. But her fans and media have placed on her the heavy responsibility/pressure of being the Savior of Women's Basketball (echo, echo, echo), something she doesn't deserve. I'm a huge CC fan, but saw the reality early that she will have growing pains. There WILL be an adjustment period. Has to be. I don't care how great a player is. You go from college to the pros in any sport you'll have to adjust. She just came off a grueling college season right into the pros, and her fans really believed she'd have the same nbrs and domination as college? The hate is unfair, but actually understandable coming from athletes at least as talented as Clark, and totally ignored. What happened in the end will I think be good for Clark, and for the WNBA. Coach Sides won’t last past the Olympics break! The WNBA can’t afford for Caitlin Clark not to have her Stephen Curry moments of shooting about 25 to 30 shots a game-and yes I’m talking about launching 3$-which is her money shot and what the fans wants to see out of Caitlin Clark this year! Nobody cares if the Fever has a winning record in Caitlin Clark’s rookie season. Anybody that has coached or played basketball on any meaningful level knows it take more than three practices for a team to learn each others strengths and weaknesses and where they like to receive the ball at or the floor. If I were the coach of the Indianapolis Fever I would run the Paul Westphal offense (just run and gun and try to out score the your-the Fever’s-opponents!) Then during the offseason the Fever can work on their defense- and offensive sets…But, for this year… can we please turn Caitlin Clark loose and let her run the same offense she ran at Iowa-that worked… Iowa made it to back-to-back NCAAW Championship games! Therefore, the style of basketball Caitlin Clark needs to play has been time tested and proven. And I know her teammates won’t have a problem playing the Paul Westphal style of offense because of Caitlin Clark’s passing ability they would be getting a lot of layups and wide open spot-up jump shots and 3$! Enough said…Call Coach Bluder so that she can show the WNBA fans what CC can do in Paul Westphal’s Run and Gun offense! The WNBA can’t afford to mess this up because as Eminem said-in “Lose Yourself…Look (WNBA you [have] one shot or one opportunity To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment, Would you capture it or just let it slip? Yo” (credit for the Eminem reference goes to KC of “Behind the Line” podcaster.
So come on WNBA owners of the Indiana Fever, get Caitlin Clark and the rest of your Indiana Fever the coach they need or else you will [lose your fan base and that of the WNBA’$] or to quote Eminem - “Lose Yourself!”

Hi, I'm from Germany and have a question about your draft system. Could CC have rejected the deal with Indiana or do you have to accept it? When I watched the game tonight, I thought to myself. OMG how bad is Indiana. I don't know what criteria Indiana uses to put the team together, but playing with 2 PGs is something I haven't seen even here in Germany. This coach Slides is completely out of his depth in my opinion. Can she actually be fired during the season? I have one more question at the end. Could CC move to another team after one season? She will never win anything in Indiana with this team. Thank you for your help. Greetings from Germany.

Drafted WNBA rookie contracts are signed for a three-year period with a fourth-year option.
If Caitlin could somehow reject her draft position, that would put her on par with other undrafted rookies. Undrafted players are rookie free agents, and therefore free to negotiate with multiple teams after the draft has concluded, but may only sign one or two-year minimum contracts.

I think I messed up my original reply as I no longer see it posted. Forgive me if this is a repeat, I stated that I'm no expert, but I know WNBA players are governed by contracts. Rookie contracts will either be 'drafted' or 'undrafted' in status, with 'drafted' getting the most pay. Had Caitlin refused her draft contract offer, it would cost her $$$.

    AS I OFTEN SAY, "PEOPLE LIE...NUMBERS DON'T":
The TOP 3 highest-rated, most watched NCAA women's tournament games ever, ALL feature....Caitlin Clark. That is not a coincidence. IOWA played a game vs DePaul in Kinnick Stadium--an outdoor football stadium--and filled it with nearly 56,000 fans. That, too, is not coincidence. Nor was it because of anyone else. It was because of Caitlin Clark. People lie. Numbers don't. Nor do numbers see race or care about feelings. So huge is Caitlin Clark's impact, that it has actually been studied, dissected and quantified in dollars. Even the DRAFT drew millions of viewers. Even her 2 PRESEASON games BOTH broke attendance records.
Caitlin's debut regular season game--last night--was the most watched WNBA game in 23 years. It drew 2.13 million viewers. By contrast, the reigning WNBA champion Aces vs Mercury game drew a measly 464,000 viewers. THAT is the Caitlin Clark Effect. Haters can cope or try to split hairs all they want. As I said, numbers do not lie. And if you think they're crying NOWWW....just wait until Caitlin's Nike shoe launches and outsells BOTH Aja Wilson and Angel Reese--combined. I think it was disappointing in multiple ways. She had 10 turnovers, most in franchise history and most in a WNBA debut. They lost by 20. Aliyah Boston had only 4 points because of those turnovers or bad shot decisions by Clark. And she really struggled whenever she got double teamed. But on the positive note she had 20 points despite all of that. She definitely going to do some damage when everything is on point in her game against these pros. That and not handling the defensive pressure well were why she had 10 turnovers. She seems incapable of allowing anyone but herself to make plays. • @colpul2103
      @colpul2103 Před 12 dny

@@marceybull By 'ball hog' I don't mean she's a chucker rather she's the only one allowed to 'make plays'. Her assists were from driving and dish to open shooters and open spot up shooters. She isn't one to rotate the ball to get ahead of defensive rotation. She isn't gong to pass to a post on the block in a way the post can make a move. You watch say Magic and Kareem there's a three or four pass series back and forth between them until Kareem has position or Magic's defender give too much slack. That's not Caitlin's game, if it ain't her making a play she ain't giving up the rock.
Notice when she does lose her dribble and passes she does not go away and screen. She stays there and demands the ball back.
I don't think any of that is a personal defect or glory hogging. I think that has worked for her since she was in junior ball through high school. Iowa was a low talent mid-field major so it was easy to build a team where she could have a 40+% usage rate. Success means you believe you are doing things right, even if there are better ways. No player ever could win at the pro level of play with the game Caitlin had in college with a that usage rate. Defenses are just too good and complex. Players are all college all stars.
My hope is that like Curry she does learn to adjust her game, that she does not believe the over hype, does not take to heart the 'savior of the WNBA' people are labeling her. I think she's an amazing talent but don't bad habits, believing your own myth, and unwillingness to change derail her.
