- As an American I don't know much about Norway's second biggest city Bergen. Today I am excited to fix that by learning about 6 of the best things to do in Bergen. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
6:34 I used to walk down this path to work every day. One morning, between the old wood buildings, I couldn't help but overhear an American tourist that for some reason seemed rather alarmed. "I think we better get out of here. I think this might be the local ghetto!", he told his wife.
I laughed all the way to work.
A city surrounded by 7 mountains = a lot of rainy days 😂 So don't forget our saying when you visit: There are no bad weather, only bad clothing. 😁 And I will recommend a visit
I live here, and Bergen has one of the best street art scenes I know about. We know to take care of it, and although it's not always legal, it is still mostly respected. The artists have plenty of galleries to sell their art, and house owners rarely remove art from their walls or report it to the police, so it's not a problem. Many companies gives the community walls free to decorate or even pay street artists to fresh up their places. One of my absolute favorite artists, AFK, is from here, and has many works around the town. I can recommend looking him up. :)
I'm thinking of going to Bergen for uni (I'm from Ireland) would you recommend it ?
I mean... if you can eat fast food in america without knowing what's in the food... You can most certainly eat fresh fish.
Most of their stuff sold even have a.. not fit for human consumption warning in Denmark i recently found out. 🤔
Bergen!!!! I love my city😍
Same
I did the annual seven mountain walk last Sunday, where we try to reach the top of all seven (official) peaks around the centre. It was difficult, and took 12 hours but was worth it
Can't believe he did not mention 3-kroneren ... the tiny hotdog stand where you can buy all sort of hotdogs like the reindeer one among other.. have been in Bergen twice, only had the chance to go there once ... but man I remember those delicious hotdogs.
I dont know Norway, or Bergen, but I guess is difficult what to chose because there should be a lot of great things to do...
It's commonly mentioned, and Tyler already reacted to a video where it was included.
I'm amazed, he didn't mention, or show "Ulriken".
One of the other mountains, where you can ride a cable car up to the top.
Maybe, he's afraid of heights ? 😉
This! More interesting then art imho! Edit: He did show it lol.... Guess i did not watch the whole video before commenting also ^^
The picture of the video in Bergen with that train, ive been on it, it was so beatiful!
Thank you for reacting to a video about my hometown for a second time, I'm away on vacation around Europe and I miss it whenever I'm away! Wherever I go, I always carry a piece of Bergen with me! :)
My hometown ❤️ You can even walk the 7 Mountain hike. We have it every year... if thats too long, you can do the 4 Mountain hike ❤️ Therapy in beautiful nature ❤️
Welcome to my hometown Bergen Tyler, lived here for 18 years soon and LOVE everything about this city. If you ever come this way, send me a DM and I will show you around dude =)
I am from norway 🇳🇴🇳🇴 hello = hallo in norway we say tusen takk = thank you
It may not be the #1 internesting sight for everyone, but the museum in Bergen which made the heaviest impression on me, was St. Jørgen's hospital. It was once the main hospital for sufferers of Lepra aka. Hansen's disease. We got to see portraits of patients, where in the country they came from, how they lived at the hospital.. They even had a chapel for themselves, with a corridor from the hospital to their own seats with fence to keep townspeople from coming close to the patients.
We got to the lab and instruments of Gerhard Armauer Hansen, the head physician at the hospital at the end of the 19th century, who discovered the lepra bacterium and from whom the diease has been named. And there was a small exihibition on medical research on this disease, the research named for him in nowadays located in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.
Lepra is most commonly known in English as "leprosy", and the afflicted "lepers", as that's how it's described in the Bible.
I live here and I can go up to the mountains whenever I want with my pass I live Norway and is pretty cool
Somehow this was just super wholesome. I really enjoyed your happiness.
Tyler; I know it's a bit far from where you live, but if you want really fresh see-food in USA, go to Maine! Stay up late or get up early, go down to the harbour and by fish straight form the boats. Go right home and cook it and enjoy :-)
My favourite place in Bergen is Outland. That's where I get all my fantasy books.
He forgot at lot of things. The Aqarum, Aboretet - the big garden outside the city, The animal museum and so much more.
This was just an example of what to do in one day.
And Bergenhus festning maybe.. The fortress
Bergen's main town planner has been Fire.
In 1702 more than 90% of the city burnt down. The second largest fire may have been in 1916 when a lot o the city centre burnt down; followed by the 1944 "Voorbode" explosion when 120 metric tons of explosive (depending on your calculations about 1,8 miilion hand granades) blrew up and pulerized and burnes the areas of Vågen and Nordnes.
After the 1955 fire some people suggested that Bryggen sghould be torn down. Partly because it was German (cf World War II occupation) and because it was slum-like and a giant fire hazard. Luckily, they dodn't. But no-one is allowed to live there.
Bryggen/Bergen was the only city in Norway that was allowed to expåort dried cod (stock fish and klippfisk; slighly different variants), even if the fish was caught in Lofoten or even further north. Being extremely durable (it can last years) it was exported to Catholic Europe where they weren't allowed to eat fish on Fridays and during Lent. (And the rest of the year being relatively cheap, certainly compared to meat).
At bryggen there's even a big statue of a dried cod.
1916 you mean I assume, not 2016...
As for the trade thing.
It's not that Bergen was the *only* place allowed to trade.
But it international trade north of Bergen was illegal with the exception of the trade with the Russians.
And the Hanseatic league in Bergen had trade privileges (paying a fixed low sum instead of a toll based of the value of the cargo, I believe it was something like a bag of grain in the original letter of privilege from the king?)
But theoretically if you lived south of Bergen you where free to trade with foreigners.
You just would have to pay way higher toll then the Hanseatic league traders in Bergen would.
Also, I'm not sure if the Hanseatic league had the same privilege elsewhere (further south) in Norway or if the privilege only applied to Bergen.
@@Luredreier Of course it was 1916 - how time flies!
I know this video is old but I would just like to say that on Fløien there is actually a tiny hut in the tree that you can rent although renting it is extremely hard and can cost you more then 2000 kroner. (Norwegian currency)
My city! You must come visit😊 The kroner is weak now, so is not so expensive traveling here.
1:04
Not exactly.
Bergen was all about trade from the start.
It used to be illegal for foreign traders coming from the south to trade north of Bergen, and for international trade north of Bergen (Russia was kind of excepted)
So anyone who wanted to export anything from northern Norway used to come to Bergen to trade.
Likewise traders from northern Germany etc used to come there and hand privileges like reduced toll and taxes in that city.
Yes, the paintings from the national romantic are of norwegian mountains and fjords, as it was the time when Norway was finding back to it's own culture again. Mountains and fjords was on focus because Denmark don't have them.
Bergen the rain capitol off europe. the month of may is at best bearable the rest off the year - well you need a stormproof umbrella- the last Norwgian city i will visit again (have relatives there).
Glad you like my city😀
The "seven mountains" is a bit of a saying, and should maybe not be taken totally literally. The three mountains Fløyen, Ulriken and Løvstakken pretty much touch the city centre itself, but once you get beyond those there must be at least eleven mountains, all competing about which ones should count as "the" seven. It's an ongoing debate with no concensus. 😊
11:29: I MADE THOSE SIGNS!
Well, the top four, green ones were made by me and my colleagues. The others have apparently been added later. 😁
You say theres nowhere like Bergen in the USA, but my family are Norwegian (and German) and also my uncle now lives in Seattle, which is twinned with Bergen. Seattle and Bergen are both by the sea, and both cold and wet with thick forests, so have a bit in common.
Velkommen til vakre Bergen. Welcome to beautiful Bergen Tyler💖💖💖🙏😊
The fish market in Bergen is a massive tourist trap. Do not recommend at all.
It's way better to go someplace like Søstrene Hagelin or whatnot to get good seafood for a reasonable price.
Also, I'm surprised he didn't walk by and mention Trekroner'n, the sausage stand which sells 250g (abt. half a pound) sausages in giant buns.
Im Norwegian and from Bergen. I think its funny how he says Bergen 😂
When its winter you can ride down fløyien with a snowracer
Houses in northern areas can be brightly coloured as there are a lot of cloudy, outcasted deys in the year
They can yes, but not for the reasons you state :) Back in the days red or earth colours were the cheapest colours to paint with because of the easily available pigments. White and blue were the expensive colours, so as people got richer they started painting their houses in different colours to reflect both the era's"fashion" and also to show their socioeconomic status. I think it's cool that even today when no colours are more expensive than others, the tradition has been kept alive.
Its nice there. I visited there once when i visited my ex. We walked down from Fløien too.
If you (Tayler) were to come to Bergen, bring a lot of money. The last time I was in Bergen, the sweater you see in the film cost about 240 dollars. And that leather hat cost about 80 dollars. And a trip with the Flöybanen costs about 8 dollars. A fish dinner with drinks about 80 dollars. per person. Regardless, I hope you get the chance to travel!!
Omg, you ate at Fisketorget it sound like. Those prices are high way robbery!
They must have seafood in Seattle ?
Bergen is called the city between the seven mountains
Someone in Bergen, send Tyler a knitted sweater, and a miniature house. We can crowdfund it 🎉
Would need an address for that
@@peacefulminimalist2028 I thought he had a P.O. Box
@@MasterKnutA Hmm maybe, I haven’t seen one though.
You have Bergen in NJ as well. I guess they’re not the same 😂
Maybe you could try learning to pronounce the Æ,Ø and Å. Would be entertaining too see you try reading things with these characters in mind.
Bergen❤my hometown!
Welcome! 😅
BR🇧🇻 - Bergen
Try whale beef if you're here! Probably not gonna get the chance to taste it very often. Don't worry, it's a species of whale hunted on to regulate the population etc. etc. :)

Y in Yinsen & York = Norwegian J

thew people born in bergen kinda have a saying: "im not from norway, im from bergen" lol :P
One of the things u can do is listen to that accent, like: æ e fra Bærgæm.
I,m from bergen ❤❤❤
Americans are not used to eating fresh food ie fish they are just used to processed food full of additives and preservatives.
Come to Norway Tyler :)
I would easy let you stay at my place for free, just outside Bergen in the low mountain areas, a few meters from fresh water full of rainbow trouts and fantastic nature.
Pocket money will be all you need.
No problem for me to bring you around to see and experience places that tourists will never experience :)
You can even bring a friend or partner.
He could of talked about the figures behind him
I live in Bergen broo😃
I live i Norway
Du må lage en Av Trondheim Norge
Not related to the video you reacted to, but I noticed that you're quite red around your eyes. Do you get enough sleep or is it possible some allergies? Whatever is the case, please take good care of yourself❤
I live 40 minutes from Bergen
I live in Norway it’s
Eating on Fisketorget is insanity. The prices are outrageous, even for Norwegian standards.
How come the street sign says Skostredet but his video says Skostrædet? Did they rethink the E and go, it should be an Æ or.? Very danish thinking if so? 😊
Well, the creator of that video Tyler reacted to is not from Bergen so guess we have to excuse him :P It was probably called Skostrædet back in the days though. He also used the old way of writing Fløyen (Fløien).
@@peacefulminimalist2028 ok, its just how we do... Her i Danmark. So it was fascinating to see. 😎
I liv in BERGEN
What can you do with a second day? Repeat Day 1?
Americans no longer know what a woman is and teach young children that pedophilia is completely normal. So you should go to a doctor to get some strong medicine, so that you dare to go out and see the world with your own eyes
Sure, have fun! Others might do other things. Then there is the third day, followed by days four and five and so on. You can repeat day one over and over and over and over. I think you should, since you have a fairly limited mind.
Silvana, I understand you are offended on behalf of USA, but there are no reasons for that. We all know that America has lots of great stuff that Tyler doesn't know about. We know that you have nice cities at the coast with fishing and seafood. We know that the nature is fantastic a lot of places, like Montana, The Rockies, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and all the wonderful beaches and islands. We know all that. Right now Tyler is fascinated by other countries. It's a good thing. Later he will probably discover his own, wonderful country.
So relax and enjoy the videos instead of letting them give you stomach ulcers. Have a great day. Hugs from Norway ❤

No, not fishing history at all
Fish *trade* history.
Bergen didn't fish much, they traded.

Very *German* actually.

I think you are very optimistic thinking that MOST Americans gnow about Oslo :D :P
I think MOST Americans thin Norway is the capital of Sweden :D :P
I don’t understand why you make a video about Bergen. That isen’t in Norway😂 Or maybe it is. It’s just a joke going around that peoples from Bergen say that they are not from Norway, they are from Bergen. Both my parents are from Bergen btw. Thankfully they moved to Trondheim before I was born😂 So I’m Trønder. Now I live just south of Oslo. But I’ll always be Trønder ❤

"A lot of the Norwegian cities...."
How many Norwegian "cities" are there, really?
108
@@OhNoNotFrank - What counts as a "city?" A population of a mere 1,000?
@@SilvanaDil You keep on acting weird, just why? In Norway, a town becomes a city when it reaches 5000 inhabitants, wouldn't take you more than a couple seconds to Google, but you chose the weirdo route, as always
Three, I think. Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim.
Around 15-20 I'd say, depending on definition.
You *still* are ignorant that the US borders the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico.... You think some fish might be there? Hmm?
Your room in Indiana is a TINY subset of the US.

@@anirenka It's just a Russian bot . He/she is all over Norwegian content online spreading hate on Norway. Probably a bored IT guy sitting in his mom's apartment in Moscow, doing Putlers work.
@@peacefulminimalist2028 That makes sense😉😁
This is the most boring and depressing place on earth.
Bergen is pretty, but boring. Just my opinion as a Norwegian who has been there numerous times. I would certainly never live there. Infamous for always having rain. Also limited shopping, and very poor selection and variety compared to Oslo. Not a fan… kinda shocking as it is our 2nd largest city after Oslo, besides Trondheim. And I don’t care what any native Bergenser has to say about that, as you so badly wanna be a republic and be separated from the rest of Norway, by all means be my guest🤡🤡🤡 Also a bit disappointed Tyler that you don’t recognize from from several other reaction videos you’ve done in the past. He showed you his family’s cabin… and not only does he live in Norway, but he’s of course a Norwegian as well. And yes Bergen is famous for its beauty, which also means one of the most touristy spots in all of Norway. I was even followed by these Americans once.
Man Norway sucks it’s so cold expensive idk why people tryna talk good about this country lol
