Today I am going to react and learn about the second biggest city in Norway, Bergen. Like most Americans I have never heard of Bergen so I have absolutely no idea what to expect, which is of course how I like it. I am also excited to react to Bergen from my American perspective because this video is going to show cool things to do in the city, not just explain the locations and landmarks. 10:35 The room is called Håkonshallen and was used as the royal hall of King Håkon Håkonsson in the mid 1200s while at the time Bergen was the royal seat of Norway, in modern years it's been used for ceremonies and arrangements of various sorts anywhere from royal dinners to concerts and diploma ceremonies for students.

A one or two month RV trip through the country gives you a opportunity to explore the country freely and also keep your expenses down.
@@Luredreier Yes, but also consider that roads in rural Norway isn`t really buildt for big RV`s. They are mostly hated by other trafficants for slowing down traffic.
The best about the Amercians are their enthusiasm and positivety. Great stuff.

Fulton fish marked in New York, The Foley Fish Company in Boston, fish markets in Maine. I'm norwegian, but even I know that your country has fish markets. USA has a lot of bad stuff, but it also has a lot of cool and wonderful things. It's a land of great contrasts. I really like your videos about Norway, Tyler. I'm a norwegian after all. And we just go wild if a forreigner mention our country😁 I guess it's because we feel a bit insignificant here far to the north. But you really should know your own country too. It's not all doom and gloom. It's a diverse, great country with lots of wonderful people. And it will be even better when you start to vote for politicians who care more about people than money, and you, the people, starts to care about each other. Keep up the good work with your learning and react a bit to all your video comments 🤓

I concur. I am Norwegian too and never been to the US. USA has everything except maybe fjords. The first potential fish markets that came to my mind were in Louisiana and Mississippi. The USA has so much great nature, it is unbelievable. Just follow the Rockies and the national parks and national forrests. The state of New York and Niagara Falls. Massachussets. The East coast all way to Canada. Smokey Mountains, Olympic National Park in the state Washington, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Yellowstone + reservoirs.
I live in Bergen the people imo is the best part of living here its very multicultural people are helpful, and to be honest its a great place to party and just enjoy life. We have a saying here in Bergen: i'm not from Norway i'm from Bergen.
We even had a skit some years ago where we blast ourselves away from the rest of Norway and become an independent nation (VERY funny)
9:10 Fort Bergenhus is a military fort that used to protect the city..
The fort is from the 1100s, and the oldest surviving building on the grounds is from 1270 and was expanded in the 1500s. This was the the building under renovation in the video.
It's also worth noting that the dining hall section is used for state dinners.
Fun facts:
The ferry you see at 6:40 is 100% electric and won an international award for design. It's also easier to enjoy the trip without all the engine noise, so that's a bonus.
An important difference between a river and a fjord is that a fjord has saltwater (since it is a part of the ocean, but a river is fresh water. :)

They save up some themselves, but we enjoy spitting in some ourselves.

That Sossage kiosk Tre Kroner is so famous that if you are in Bergen it is maybe one of the places you just have to go 🙂

Bergen is my hometown! It's true that things are fairly expensive here but there is also a lot to see and do. The video you reacted to mentioned Mount Fløyen but there are also six other mountains surrounding Bergen, with Mount Ulriken being the highest of them at 643 m (2,110 ft), it has a cable gondola going up to the top and back down again and there are also stairs built by sherpas that take you to the top as well. The view from Mount Ulriken is amazing, dare I say even better than the view from Mount Fløyen. When you're on top of Mount Ulriken, you see the entire Bergen valley from north to south and it's really impressive. There's also a restaurant and a souvenir shop on top of the mountain, again with stiff prices but still worth mentioning.
I actually work with the Ulriken cable gondola (driving it), and I can absolutely wouch for the view being fucking amazing!

Edit: Oh and if you want something special for dinner, go to Voss (my hometown, 100km away from Bergen) and get yourself smalahove at a restaurant.

Here's the thing about Norwegian. There are so many dialects that however you pronounce something, it's probably right somewhere. Your "Bergen" is very american, but also very in line with what we call it over here in the eastern part of Norway. 100% acceptable! (likely to everyone in Norway, but I won't speak for them)
Bergen is the city in Norway were the people say we are not from Norway we are from Bergen. The rest of us really hoped it was true.😎🥳❤️🇧🇻

*A canyon* is made by a large river, and is *V* shaped, as the river gradually carved itself downwards.
*A fjord* is made by the enormous weight and pressure of a glacier and is *U* shaped, as it gradually retracted through the underlaying river canyons the melting water made.
- And the reindeer hotdog is *65 kr* - ...practically 6.5 $ USD. so NOT 2$ It's still worth it though.
Yes Norwegians are in general good in english. The main reason is of course school, but nothing is dubbed. So "anything" on NETFLIX is in its original language with Norwegian subtexts. We also play games and learn english that way. And of course; its a multicultural country.
*And finally:* Do you travel to Bergen, or should you go to Oslo?
Bergen. And I will say that over and over again.
Just because Oslo is the capital, does not mean it has the most to offer. It is working _heavily_ on its cultural image though, trying to become a _modern_ tourist magnet - precisely because unlike Bergen with it's natural beauty, history and...everything! - Oslo must create it from the bottom up. It's getting there.

Hey Tyler I think you would really enjoy checking out the train that goes from Oslo to Bergen, its called the "Bergensbanen" and it is said to be among the most beautiful train rides in the galaxy
Fjords are the places where the SEA took over after a glacier melted.
Since Norway was totally covered by glaciers before, when these glaciers disappeared they generated a lot of fjords.

Vesterålen and Lofoten will blow his mind! I've never been there, but it's definitely on my bucket list. I'm originally from Oslo, but I have lived in Hedmark for 22 years. We have a lot of beautiful areas here, too, but it's definitely not wild and rugged like it is up in Northern Norway.

Heey my home city. But serious, this guy just show a few things. Ulriken and Akvariet was missing. But nice video.
I love Bergen, a lot of it has to do with how it never feels opressive by the man made structures. You don't have to go far before it allows you a breather as it opens up to a park, a lake, a plaza, the fjord or trails up one of the 7 mountains surrounding it.
Downside is, it rains like you wouldn't believe.
Surprised he didn't mention the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen. It's where the composer behind Hall of the Mountain King and Morning Mood lived, both of which i can guarantee you've heard
Out of all the videos on norway you watched this is the one that contained the least amount of information that was either incorrect or outdated. He managed to get most of it right, but there are still a couple of things that needs clarification.
Fish market
His point on the prices being touristy is bang on, the quality is decent but the fish market used to cater to the locals. The past 20 years or so it's been more for tourists and the prices reflect that. Fortunately it's mostly good quality fish still.
The fjords
Bergen being marketed as "the gateway to the fjords" is both correct and incorrect. Bergen itself does not have any fjords and the closest fjord is hours away. If you travel to Bergen and expect to see the city and the fjords in a couple of days you will be disappointed. But it is a great place to start if you plan properly. Enjoy Bergen for a couple of days and then continue up the coast, going slightly in at times) and you'll see almost every fjord in norway. Or use Bergen as a base and make day trips to the closest fjords when you feel you've seen everything you want in Bergen.
Bryggen
All the shops are unfortunately the same tourist traps you'll find all over norway. Trolls have no uniquely historical connection to the city of Bergen or it's culture, feel free to walk around the narrow streets of bryggen, but don't buy anything there.
Bergenhus festning
The tour is interesting enough if you're into history, but make your way up to the upper ramparts of "Øvre Sverresborg" and you'll get the best view of both the fortress, the city and the port that you can get without having to climb a mountain.
Fløyen
Although he got the name wrong, he got most of it right. Yes, it's a mountain, one of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen, from which the city takes it's name. Take the funicular up, enjoy the view, go for a hike and walk down. Restaurant is good, but not worth the price. You can get better food in Bergen for less.
Food
Here he got one thing right, 3kroneren (the hot dog shack) is absolutely a staple of Bergen. While reindeer are not native to Bergen it's still locally produced using sausages from Solheim kjøtt. He did however miss out on a lot of the really amazing food that is available in Bergen. Colonialen, Banzha and Cornelius (more for the experience than the food) to name a few. And if he kept walking past 3kroneren and made a right turn down skostredet he would have discovered some of the best chocoloate in the world from Fjåk and locally made ice cream with amazing and inventive flavours like skillingsbolle (Bergens version of cinnamon bun) from Hallaisen.
Street art
He got the url wrong, it's streetartbergen.no but other than that you can find a lot of cool pieces just walking around the city.

most off Norway is beautiful. fjords in the west - but horendus amount of rain (Bergen is europes rain capital around 3 meters off rain/year- may is the driest month), mountains in the midle from south to north, valleys and the best weather in the east, stunning beauty in the north but dont expect to sweat ;-) .

Do note that saying fjord about any narrow body of water is only done in informal Scandinavian speech, which is common usage in some dialects and other Nordic languages. In formal speech however it should only be used about coastal features that can be described as a sea valley. In English only the formal definition is used.
As for Reindeer meat, not only is it tasty, but it's also rich in Omega 3, equal to Cod, making it an alternative for those who aren't fond of seafood.

The fortress and castle in Bergen is the old royal castle from the middel of the 1200s. Bergen was the capitol of Norway untill the end of the 1200s when it was relocated to Oslo.
Been living in Bergen for 18 years (nearly half my life) and I love it here :) It's a large city from a Norwegian's perspective (it's the second largest in the country) but has the feel/atmosphere of a small town. I definitely recommend visiting Fløyen for anyone coming here, whenever I go I usually take the funicular up to the top and then hike back down through the woods, the sounds of the city just falls away and you feel like you are in the middle of nature, but you are still in the middle of the city centre.
I disagree with this guy about the Norwegian diet being mostly fish. Yes, there's plenty of fish here, but also plenty of meat dishes. There's plenty of people here who don't eat all that much fish, just as there are plenty who do.

Do check out more amazing Norwegian cities. Me as a Norwegian can particularly recommend Tromsø in the North. Then there's Trondheim and Stavanger. There's also towns further north than Tromso, like Hammerfest and Alta, although, they're pretty small.
I grew up in Germany and South Africa but my granny is Norwegian. We always grew up with those little trolls in our house. I've still got one now in my room. Love me a good troll.

Bergen is beautiful. It can be rainy, but that's a part of the Norwegian charm. Without the rain, Norway wouldn't have fresh air and fauna.

Tyler your pronounciation of Bergen is just fine, in Bergen they say it with the french r, almost everywhere else we roll the r. Oslo is pronounced Ochlo. Thanks for posting, you are cery entertaining 🇧🇻
People from Oslo say oschlo, but elsewhere they use the "correct" pronounciation oslo. I am from Bergen but moved to Oslo, by the way. I will never say oschlo!🤣
You may say sjino, but it is still not correct, until some generations later, unfortunately. This was the same with oscho at some time in history.

It's not a myth, it's historical facts.

The rats themselves did not spread the Black Death, that's true, but they did spread the fleas that carried the virus with them. The rats spread in Bergen, (which was then called Bjoergvin), and the fleas jumped to people who became infected.
So it's at least a partial truth, one might say.

Tyler, a few things. I’m just a regular average American that happens to have lived in Bergen for a few years now. I love your videos and interest in the place. If you ever want to take a trip here and have an American help you find places I’d love too help.
Also, Bergen in my view is one of the most difficult words to pronounce as bergensers do, because it uses a very rarely found retroflex.
Bergen is also one of the big concert cities in the country, lots of big artists names have performed here
Hi Tyler i am a swede and i have to say that this Fjord in Norway are just amazing the as are smaller the the most fjords are really long fjord a norwegian friend to me but me in a boat with no engine and we just traveling on the water as was pumping out to the atlantic and treveling back when the water pumping back in to the fjord in the beginning when we start going back in the fjord is was a really fast speed on the but it calm down after 20minuts this movement of water dont we have in sweden we only have like your in US one direction down the river this was 30 year ago and i wondering if they still juse this naturtraveling today i have asked many norweigan but they dont know so much about this traveling very strange my bee it was a old traveling style as they not juse today and they give warning for sailboat to traveling in this small fjords because of the ruff water and like you say Tyler we in Scandinavian living here because it is Animals.Lake and woods near us and that is because we can't exist without the nature we can't make a Beach without check if the fish and bird life been destroyed by the changes 🇺🇸🇳🇴🇸🇪👍🏼. cities in sweden are 10 times more beaitful than ours, we have got ridd of all the most beaitful stone buildings and exchange it with ugly ass glass buildings. Oslo had the stone theme just like Stockholm and gøteborg, but the politics fucked up Oslo

@@Hammarspiken i was in stockholm this summer, downtown, airport, all the nice places. there were more young arabs than young swedes itself. literally all who worked at the airport were arabs, pakistanic, somalians, and i would say 20% of the young ppl i saw in stockholm were ethnic swedes. stockholm dont feel like europe at all, i mean. its crazy, the only reason why the etthnic population in stocholm is like 60% is because of the old white population, imagine when they die, sweden will literally be a arabic country, thats why the meme ``swedenistan`` is from. shame to see, malmø is even worste. in oslo, 50% of the young population are immigrants, only the older population take the % higher for us. when the 1940s,50,60s generation dies, GG (

Eyyy, my city! Well, I live a bit outside it (in a fjord, naturally). Now you wanna be careful about getting into pronunciation, cause we Bergenians have a rather particular dialect compared to other places in the country. For example Norwegian typically has rolling Rs, but in the Bergen dialect it's a harsh R similar to French. Being born here but growing up on the other side of the country right by the border to Sweden where the Rs were super soft or even non-existent really did make me stand out... In a not too fun way for a kid, ha ha.
I took Fløybanen today, its 75 NOK now. 150 for a two way ticket.
Also I saw two people doing a street art piece in the city center. Beautiful one so they had for sure been hired;)

I live in Bergen, have lived here 15 years now, it is stunning. We do have the most rain in all of Norway, but stil tops my chart one of the best places to visit in Norway =)
BTW all our insane cool fjords are cut out of the mountain by ice during the end of the iceage, some are as deep as 1300meter+ and when you consider that is between powerful mountains of the same height and higher it is kind of mind boggeling =)

YEAH, my beloved hometown! The most beautiful city in Norway without a doubt, of course said completely objectively ;)
But of course there is a flip side to the coin.
1. The fish market. As he says, the fish market has unfortunately become a tourist trap. Prices are unnaturally high and the average citizen does little shopping at the fish market precisely because of it. I mean, who can afford smoked salmon at NOK 1,100, ($110) a kilo or fresh cod at NOK 600, ($60) a kilo.
2. The fjords are not part of Bergen. We have cruises that start in Bergen and take you to e.g. The Hardangerfjord, or you can take a train to Flåm and cruise from there in the Sognefjord, but these fjords are NOT part of Bergen itself. We are known as "The Gateway to the Fjords" but are not part of the fjords themselves.
And the picture from the cliff overhanging Ringedalsvatnet is not in Bergen either. Trolltunga is located in Odda, Hardanger, which is more than 2 hours' drive from Bergen.
3. Bryggen in Bergen. This was the Hanseatic power center in the Nordic region where they traded fish around almost the entire world. The Hanseatic League is also the reason why many families in Bergen have German surnames (Friele, Mowinckel, Fosswinckel, Meyer, Wedeler, Martens, Wiese, Konow, Wesenberg etc.).
It was also here that the Black Death spread in Norway and killed around a third of the population.
Unfortunately, Bryggen is now in danger due to global warming causing increasingly frequent floods.
4. Bergenhus Fortress. Once upon a time, Norway's royal seat under Håkon Håkonssen, but with roots going back to 1180. King Håkon 1 built Håkonshallen, which today is used during ceremonial functions, especially by the University of Bergen and usually when the King and Queen is in town, hosting dinners in the beautiful hall.
I served my military service at Bergenhus as cook and had the honor of being one of the cooks cooking for King Harald during his first opening of Festspillene i Bergen, (The Bergen Internasjonal Music Festival) in May 1992.
5. The trip up to Fløyen is not particularly difficult. It consists of paved roads for the most part through idyllic streets filled with old villas where the upper class lived, and still lives. These are now the most expensive homes you can buy in Bergen IF you are so extremely lucky to be able to afford it and at the same time find something for sale. The homes here are mostly inherited by the family and the same families have lived here for generations.
If you take the cable car up, at least walk down so you don't miss this beautiful and historic part of town.
6. The food in Bergen. It is not true that we have a mostly fish-based diet. It's something we had in the past when Bergen was a big fishing town. Now it is more evenly distributed between meat and fish, as it is in the rest of Norway and the world. We have quite an average diet, I'd say.
The kiosk where he bought the sausage is an institution in Bergen. It's called Trekroneren, (Three Crowns) which refers to the prices of the sausages when Dag Hjellestad took over in 1978 and has been in the same place since they started in 1948. They have Europe's largest selection of hot dogs and also the world's largest hot dog at 30 cm. Not bad for a small shed of 15 square meters.
7. Street art. Graffiti was seen as a big problem in Bergen when it arose in the 80s. Instead of using the police and punishments, the politicians in collaboration with the artists came up with a solution that I think is very ingenious. They put buildings and walls at the disposal of the practitioners to do whatever they wanted, provided they did not commit vandalism elsewhere. We now have quite a few walls in Bergen that have been set aside by the politicians for street artists to use for their art. The largest and most famous is in the old Sentralbadet, where several of the walls are decorated with constantly changing art from various artists. A great initiative from both politicians and artists that became inspiration for other cities and countries in Europe.
He forgot an important part about Bergen. Bergen is the origin of the second wave of Black Metal with bands such as Immortal, Taake, Burzum, Hades Almighty and others. The studio in Grieghallen under Pytten is the place where the unmistakable cold sound of True Norwegian Black Metal originated and bands from not only Norway but large parts of Europe were queuing up to record in Grieghallen at this time.
Unfortunately, this was also where some idiots took things too seriously and WAY TOO far when they started burning churches and murdering each other and innocents who had nothing to do with the metal scene.
Bergen granted it´s city status in 1070, at that time the City name was Bjørgvin and until ca 1300 the city was considerd to be the capital city. in the 1600 Bergen was considerd to be the larges city in the Nordic contries, but due to the plage Bergen lost the lead of beeing the larges populated city, In Bergen we do have a big outdoor/housing museum called "Gamle Bergen museum" or Old Bergen museum. where many of the historic old trehousing is moved to, here you can meet actors in histoical clothing that represent the timing of when the housing was build.
Bergenhus like Michael says is a millitary fort, the fortress includes Rozenkrants tårnet (the large structure that was under renovation the video), Håkonshallen (the banckethall) and Koengen all of them is guarded by the millitary. Koengen is moustly used as a consertarena during BergenFest (a festival in preformans arts and music), but also during Bergen Food Festival.
In Bergen we do have to active naval schools: Håkonsvern and Sjøkrigsskolen.
If you are intrested in WW2 history you may come across a histori about a School bombing, (Holen) during WW2 the British airforce was trying to bomb "Bruno" a submarine base build by the germans during the war. unfortnally a navitational error was made, and the Birtish faild in the attempt to destroy this structure, and hit a children school. "Bruno" is now considored a historical sight, and is to be preseved.
He mentioned Fløyen (Fløyan as he wrote), mount Ulriken do we also need to bring out. this mountan has also to ways up and down, a hiking path and a cabelcar. Ulriken is considerd the higest mountian that is sourinding the citycenter of Bergen. Each year her in Bergen there is a mountain hiking race call "7 fjellsturen" (7 mountain). this 7 mouintains are the 7 tops sourinding the city center.

I used to live in Bergen and the city is beautiful, had to move a few years ago down to Sandnes which is a 20 min trip with train, really miss bergen (Bergen is also the BIGGEST city in norway and it has 3 huge mountains surrounding the city, but Bergen is extremely expensive to live in tho)

"Æ" is pronounced the same way you say "bad" without the "b" and "d".
"Ø" is the way you pronounce the "e" in "early"
"Å" is pretty close when you say crocs, but remove "cr-cs"

Bergen is my hometown, and this video is cool, but it’s highly exaggerated how much fish we eat 😂 Norwegians eat steak, tacos, pizza and whatever. I feel like it’s normal to have fish like once per week, or some other type of seafood. Fun fact, Bergen is also a very rainy city, but beautiful! (The most beautiful in my humble opinion😅). It also used to be the capital of Norway back in medieval times towards the end of the Viking era.

Are You sure about that ? If so, well that food is not really healthy. and You are waisting Your money on crap as there is nothing really impressive about norwegian pizza except for the price. Your WILD (not cultivated) fish however is both superhealthy and crazy cheap, especially when You consider how healthy wild fish is... I spent one year in Stavanger eating almost nothing but wild fish caught in the north sea and it made wonder with my health and my brain. I retrieved my ability to read one or two books in a day. Something I thought I had lost with my youth . Now I am back in Sweden and I still eat a lot of wild fish but here it is like two or three times more expensive and the fish is not quite the same and sometimes there simply is no wild fish in the stores here. You just do not understand how lucky you are to have Your north sea fishing industry supplying You with plentiful of the best food in the world from unpolluted waters ! And at prices that allows all norwegians access to this great fountain of health ....

Hey mate, the reason why fjords can be hard to understand is because there are several definition. For the vikings a fjord is any waterway. But stick to the geolocial definition: is that the water is deeper between the mountains and more shallow further out.
Fjords are like this: When you cut mountains with a 1000 meter ice knife heavy full of rock particles it will create a much sharper valley then simply pouring water. But all this carved out rock needs to go somewhere, and that's why you see flat farmland with shallows on the western shore of Norway while the western interior is mountains and deeper.
For example Lysefjorden (google this place) is 550 meters deep between the mountains but only 14 meters further out.
You have Grand Canyon, though. That's pretty amazing and exotic and different for us. I'd love to see that in real life someday!

If you can manage to ge a 1 month unpaid vacation at some point and save up for a RV trip through Norway with some money spent on exploring things too.
Food, plane tickets, fuel, the RV rent, tickets to various things here, tolls, ferries, etc, etc...
You can make up your own mind about where you'd like to visit then and how much time to spend in each place. :-)

Keep the schedule a bit loose as you might want to include weather forecasts in your planning, if there's bad weather on one side of the mountains staying on the other side might be a good idea.
Make sure that you get a discord channel or something and get a community that can back your visit.

And if you happen to come close to one of us you may even be able to meet them and go and drink a coffee or something with them and talk with them etc.

Norwegian is our main spoken language, but English is our second spoken language we are taught in school. You can later on in school learn a 3rd language if you so choose, between French, German or Spanish.
Norway knew from early on that, if we were to trade and work internationally, we should be good at both writing and speaking the language most of the world speak and write in. And English is the main language used in trade and commerce.

Hi Tyler, I have noticed your confusion about the fjords 😃 I think if you look at a map and notice our coastline, it will make sense to you. All those thin fjords stretching in from the coast, thats it! Btw, I'm from Bergen, a Bergenser as we call ourself, with a tiny bit of hanseatic blood. The little kiosk that sold reindeer sausages has been there, selling sausages for more than 75 years.

You should react to something about Stavanger. Its the oil capital of Norway. Stavanger metro area, Stavanger/Sandnes is the 3 biggest in Norway with about 250k people. Stavanger and Sandnes are two cities that have grown together. Stavanger is the starting point for alot of Beautiful places. And mostly the "pulpit rock" where Mission Impossible 6 was filmed.
And Stavanger and Bergens Football (Soccer) teams have a FIERCE rivalry. Viking from Stavanger and Brann (means Fire) from Bergen. Viking is these days without a doubt the best teams of the two.

I not been to many places in America but Seattle is on of the places and it does have a similar fish marked to Bergen.

The funny thing is unless the dude vlogging asked permission to film those people like in the hot dog stand (which I doubt just because of how it was filmed), he is actually doing something illegal.
Norwegians highly value privacy, so if you take a picture or video where there are less than 10 people (blurry background or people walking by is fine, or if you just bur out the faces) you should ask permission(obviously this is more about strangers taking pictures).
But from what I understand, if someone is unaware or not given permission in a picture with less than 10 people(and the face is recognizable) they have the right to ask and even demand that you delete that picture.
I remember when I was young, my stepmom got furious when she saw a picture of a playground on Facebook where 2 of my younger siblings were playing in the background. They were obviously not the focus, but the dude illegally/accidentally uploaded a picture of a stranger's children.
He took it down, and I could be wrong, but I believe that she could have taken legal action if he had denied her request.
