Beef Shanks in the Slow Cooker
Makes 6 servings
2 lb beef shanks, bone in
2 Tbsp whole wheat flour
1 tsp iodized salt aka table salt
2 tsp freshly cracked pepper
1 tsp ground thyme
1 Tbsp canola oil
2 onions, chopped
¾ lb cremini mushrooms, cut in half
8 large cloves garlic, minced
½ cup no salt added beef broth
½ cup dry VQA red wine
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
3 large sticks fresh rosemary or more if desired, tied in a bundle using butcher’s string 3 large carrots, scrubbed, chopped into chunks
1. On a large plate mix together flour, salt, pepper and thyme. Dredge the chunks of meat in the flour mixture. Reserve flour for Step 5.
2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the oil and then the meat and brown on all sides. Place in the slow cooker.
3. Add onions and garlic to the frying pan and sauté until browned. Place in slow cooker.
4. Remove frying pan from heat and add broth and scrape up any browned bits in the pan. Pour into slow cooker.
5. Whisk together: wine, Worcestershire sauce and any leftover flour from Step 1. Pour into to the slow cooker. Cover with the carrots. Top with the bundle of rosemary. And cover with mushrooms.
6. Put the lid on, set to Low and cook for 6 hours or until the meat is tender. Serve with either mashed potatoes or coked barley. I like adding peas as well.

My favourite dish - pineapple coconut chicken ... it was the first dinner my husband ever made for me, when we started dating and he only knew how to cook using his slow cooker! Now he does all the cooking and is quite accomplished.

Family outgrew my chipped small crock pot, husband used pressure cooker for DIY paint pot, no comment. I cook everything in it and am training my children to use it. These days shrimp and rice with veggies, yum.

You are my kindred spirit ... some days I plod about in my pj's until cocktail hour!! I do not have a slow cooker ... so I use a large pot and the oven to "slow cook" ... cover your ears ... Coca Cola pot roast ... I highly doubt it counts as heart healthy but it's delicious. Thanks for the beef shank tip ... I'm totally adding that to the roster

I cook a lot of things in my slow cooker, but you'll like this one, Mairlyn - I use it to make mulled wine. Put the wine & other ingredients into the slow cooker, simmer them on high per the recipe, then turn it down to Low and it keeps it at the perfect serving temperature.

Love my slow cooker. Since beef is so expensive, we end up doing mostly chicken. But, I have done a ham, sweet and sour meatballs, chicken wings, chicken in pasta sauce, beef Workman's Roast, pea soup, or rueben soup and chili. Usually I add veggies like mushrooms, carrots, onions, turnips or rutabagas, and celery to whatever dish I want. Since there are only 2 of us, it's great to make at least 2-3 meals out of as leftovers are tasty and easy to reheat. This recipe looks yummy, love the rosemary, and the pjs...

Love our "Swamp Soup" - chicken breasts, carrots, barley (YUM!!), leeks, Italian & curly parsley topped with chicken stock. Can also make a beef version. End result is rather 'green' hence why the kids refer to it as swamp soup. Still use my Mom's pressure (Presto) cooker to make stews. How wonderful to be able to do everything in 1 pot!!!

Beef stew in my old slow cooker is my favourite on a cold winter day. Love that is cooking away while I am out for the day and the house smells so wonderful when I get home!

I would love one of these. I've had to return to work after some unfortunate events that have happened in my life. This would make meal prep so much easier. I love making pasta sauce, homemade soups and osso bucco.

I have so many things that I like to cook in my slow cooker. I pick a weekend and make a whole bunch of freezer slow cooked meals. Then when I know I am going to have a busy day or we are going to be out for the day I grab a meal out of the freezer and throw it into the slow cooker. Easy peasy.

My favorite thing to make in a slow cooker is a pot roast especially on a week night. Roast Beef dinner is just not for Sunday anymore! I will definitely try this recipe!

I love to cook round steak, soup, stew, chicken pieces, scalloped potatoes, and lots more in my slow cooker. It's good for too many things to pick just one! It's great in the summer to cook supper sides in while you enjoy the beach!

There are 2 things that I really love to cook in my slow cooker, although I use it a lot all year round. The first is baked beans with molasses and a hint of maple syrup... it is the only way I will eat baked beans. My other favourite thing to make in my slow cooker is apple butter. I make a big batch every year and the slow cooker makes it so easy. Love slow cooker cooking.

I enjoy making seasoned and shredded chicken in my slowcooker! I either use it right away for hot pulled chicken sandwiches (smoky BBQ sauce, coleslaw... yum!), or freeze it for later and use it for sandwiches, tacos, salads, ect. Super easy, delicious, and convenient!

Marilyn, love your enthusiasm for cooking and good for us food. I love making "cleaned up Hamburger Soup" in my slow cooker! My daughter and I traditionally make this together-she preps and I add my years of expert knowledge of spices to create a slightly different flavour everytime. I make it on my own, but the flavours and satisfaction ( Love) is always best with my daughter. I've heard great comments of this Breville multi machine! Would love to try it out (with my daughter) !

Hi Marilyn. I am delighted to see a combo SLOOOW and pressure cooker made by Breville. I have used a Presto pressure cooker since the 70's and think it is time to get more current..lol...and not have to worry about the dreaded walk from the stove to the sink to get the pressure cooker to cool...only ever blew up once. I am also a huge fan of slow cookers. My favourite recipe is to put small foil balls in the bottom of the slow cooker, then put a whole seasoned chicken on top. Put the lid on, cook on high 3.5 hours. When it is done you can broil in the oven for added flavour.Also I have to got to get some "Onion Goggles".Your videos always are very informative and of course me laugh!

I love making lots of things in my slow cooker. They're great for snow days, or days the kids have a lot going on. I love the set it and forget it kind of attitude, but a family favorite is chicken cacciatore

The thing I like to cook the most is my special beef roast recipe that everyone loves and I'm sure to tell how it's a special recipe that I've slaved over. The truth is I put my roast in with water and a packet of onion soup mix and that's it. It's the most delicious, tender, flavorful meat ever and with the leftover juice I make the best gravy. A little white lie in the kitchen won't hurt anyone !

I think that one of my favourite dishes in the slow cooker is beef, but brisket in a sauce can be absolutely incredible (and moist!) when done in the slow cooker. Not to mention, you can chill it to take off the fat, and it's economical! Smitten Kitchen's Sweet and Tangy Brisket is to die for!

I really enjoy cooking with my slow cooker, but often wish I had another to use at the same time. My favourite dish for the slow cooker is Cherry Pork Chops, although I also like Crockput Stuffing....so much easier than stuffing the turkey.

I like to use stewing beef, veggies, spices - all coming together to make a tender mouthwatering meal that can easily be frozen for future meals (but that rarely happens because no one wants to wait before having more). :)
