The Rat Terrier is the ideal farm dog that they were always intended to be. President Theodore Roosevelt is said to have given the breed its name after his own terrier had eradicated the rat infestation at the White House; clearly, the Rat Terrier excels as a public servant - as long as it’s in their own best interest. They’re an American tradition just like apple pie, but watch your plate, or you may find you’re missing dessert.
Never knew much about breed until I adopted mine by sheer accident from a kill shelter. She was on way to gas chamber and sick with kennel cough. The minute I walked by her cage she was screaming to get out so I adopted her on the spot. Best dog I have ever had, she is a great apartment dog, loves to run, has such a funny little personality and was great company after my husband died in a tragic accident. I will always cherish the little rattie that keeps my feet warm and my heart warmer! Loves kids too and is a great security system!
I saved my rat terrier from my neighbors. They left her road kill. She was eating chicken food I was throwing outside. Think they got mad at the young dog. This dog has been such a joy I just can’t tell u. U are right on.
I have a type A female and she has a brilliant mind. Like she says, u have to stay ahead of them or they will control you lol. Super fun and super smart dogs
We adopted our Rattie 7mo ago from the local pound, on a fluke (looking for our missing chiweenie’s littermates). Absolutely BEST decision and a challenge. Super sweet breed 😘❤️
That's cool She has a good home able to have a good life I rescued mine from a couple that wasn't able to take care of the dog who rescued it from the side of the road With a stick and a rope tied to his leg and the shelter said that if he didn't get the weight that it needed to get That they would put the Doggy down And it was only two months We decided to take it in me and my younger siblings Along with a barodisan ridgeback

I know how you feel. I had a rat terrier who passed away last November. She was one of the fastest little dogs I’ve seen. She lived to be 16 years. I loved my little one ❤️. I miss her all the time

A dog that can kill a rat is gold. On a serious note as a girl we had a legendary cat who fought grandaddy rats her size. I hope to one day have a dog that is sweet but has a hatred for rats, the bigger the better.

Have had 2 generations of the rat terrier. They’re great friends. She’s got it spot on. They’re difficult do describe because they are all really different depending on their owner.
My first rat.. perfect in every way, never cried, wanted to learn, very smart.
My current two, one is a lovable possessive freak and the other is a shy sweet tuxedo boy.

I love this breed! I had a dog that was (dam) Rat Terrier, Game Lines Jack Russel Terrier cross , and (sire) English Bull Terrier. We lived on a ranch in Texas. Her name was Moxy and boy did she have some moxie. We counted her killing somewhere around 150 Raccoons, and numerous opossums, hundreds of mice, rats, squirrels. She even managed to dispatch an armadillo. What slowed her down was a near death fight with a bobcat. She tore off it's testicles, she spent over a week in the vet-hospital. She still took out varmints; however she didn't just run strait at them anymore like she did with the bobcat.

I’ve been around dogs all my life, bred many types and worked many types. I’ve alwYss prided myself on having a good solid knowledge of dogs and all types of breeds, and then your vids pop up and I realise I don’t know it all. Thanks mate. I’m so happy to have found this video! I adopted a little dog from a rescue recently but the vet there listed her as a Jack Russell X. You have described her in your video. She’s 11 lbs, young and the most loving dog I have ever had … but omg when she goes outside she’s a total warrior! I have a lot of land and she’s always wanting to play outside - chasing squirrels and stalking birds. She rarely barks and always wins in a foot race! 😂 She has motivated my other dog (11 lb. cairn X) to become more playful. They are both little comedians … endless fun!
I had a rat terrier for nearly 15 years. She was the best and had a big personality. We now have a rat terrier mix. They are one of the best terriers ever. It’s a shame they aren’t easier to find. The way a ratter hunts is impressive and it’s so fast. My dog dispatched 5 voles in less than a minute. They hear the critters above ground and dig them up lightening fast with precision. They are very obedient dogs until they get on the scent. Loved watching this video. Your content is great as always.

I had a rat terrier she died in November this year 2020 I miss her so much. I got her from operation kindness in 2006.
I rescued mine from a fwy on-ramp. Prancing little critter. Stands up to dance, always props on my leg at the computer, first to dive under the covers in cold weather, leans his head across my other small dog, as to rest or cuddle. A real alarm alert beyond my hearing of anything outside, welcomed. A loving friend.
my girl sleeps with me under the covers every night down by my feet. doesn't bark too much I live in a house with a fencing yard and she's fine but then when I take her on walks I don't use a leash she just walks by me super loyal dogs

Ratties are the best. I love mine and see myself owning one forever. Everything she said personality wise is 100% true. This is my second rattie and both have very similar personalities. They think they’re big dogs and yet, they’re scared of wind lol.

My first family dog was a rat terrier, we still have him, he is 10 now and is awesome. He kills the mice that come on our property and is such a great family dog. Since he was raised with kids I don't have to worry about how he acts when he meets new kids, typically he is not very interested with them and when my nephew tries to grab his nose or his ears, he just walks away. (Also an added bonus is, at least with mine, he doesn't bark, unless he finds mice or other small rodents)
I will probably only ever have Rat Terriers for the rest of my life, I highly recommend this breed!
Thank you SO MUCH for this informative video. We’ve just adopted a rescued mutt here in Naples, Italy (we’re stationed here, again 😁❤️🇮🇹) that looks like a rat terrier more than anything else. She displays 90% of the looks, characteristics, behavior and attitude of this beautiful breed. She’s only 9 weeks old, and now I have a better understanding of how to train, exercise and love her to our fullest potential. Her addition has made our family very happy. “Bella” is most certainly a blessing to us. Thanks again for the info. 🐶❤️
I’m jelly you’re in Italy. My daughter was near Vicenza for three years when her husband was stationed there. I got to spend a lot of time there and I swear I left passer of my heart there.
We just figured out what our border collie cross is crossed with. We thought it was some kind of terrier ,now we know which one! Pretty awesome dog.

I had a rattle. She was so incredibly attuned to my mood. And if I became upset at her, she would rush over to make it alright. She couldn't stand my being upset at her. I never took much time training her, she just picked things up intuitively. Example: I live in a city and she somehow figured out that at each intersection, she should jump into my arms so I could safely carry her across the street and let her down. I had to make the slightest motion with my hand and she knew what to do. But, contrary to your more experienced testimony, Mandy was a barker.
My boy's not a excess barker. But, man is he seriously motivated to yell at the cats that want to hang out on top of our home. It's a travel trailer and so it's so loud in here when they jump up... Drives him nuts. But, he shuts up after a few barks after I tell him no. He's not too much of a continue against my wishes. Like our old Carmel cocker spaniel was, he was nuts 36hrs straight barking never let up... An he sounded like a 60lbs dog but he was 30...

I have a Chihuahua/rat terrier mix i love her she is a perfect mix of both. Beautiful, graceful, full of energy, loves her people and a double dose of big dog syndrome. That last part is concerning sometimes. Every once in a while she challenges the large dogs. Correction usually takes care of it not physical just verbally.

I have owned mine for about twelve years. What a dog! He is the smartest most protective dog I have ever owned. He is thick in the chest and an absolute beast.
We are on our third ratties ,she put it very well . I'm a little overprotective with my ratties . I do teach them to hunt mice and rats but not snakes.

Everything she said is so true. So smart and they can be stubborn. I think my girl is a lot more stubborn then my boy was haha. They are such sweet and loyal dogs. There’s also hilarious, she is always making me laugh. They are definitely a big dog in a small package. Such a versatile breed. I came across my first Rat Terrier by accident at a rescue and now I don’t see my life without a Rattie. I love them so much I went to a reputable breeder who does health testing for my second Rat Terrier after my boy Zeus passed from Cushing’s at 14. I think he definitely would’ve live a couple more years if it wasn’t for the Cushing’s 😔😔 I miss him every day but I’m so happy to have Minka now. He lead me to her because if he wasn’t such a great dog I would’ve have ever had another. I will never not have one 💕💕💕
I have a 10 yo rat terrier / min pin, Baby (I rescued 5 years ago). This breeder’s comments are 100% accurate. He thinks he’s a big dog but warms up to everyone at the dog park. He keeps tabs on the squirrels and bunnies all day long. I love min pins but really fell in love with the quirks of this breed. Protective, cuddly and very smart.
Love the terrier spot light. Love the channel and focus on working dogs but lots of hard charging Terriers still in use that could use the recognition.
I find this so funny because my rat terrier is literally scared of her own shadow and legit have see her get scared and run away from a fly.

I love my rattie, such a wonderful dog thou he is very heavily muscled , and came from a great breeder Clearbrook Kennels in Washington state , thou I did buy him this was before I started rescue work , and foster as well , they are so great and yes stubborn
I have a male brindle,saw him in action 2yrs ago,omg,freaked me out to see the power and intent..my BABY who is such and intelligent,sinsative loving companion,I love him so much✌️😁💓
We have a 1.5 year old brindle female (think she's mixed with chihuahua). She's killed 5 rabbits between Saturday and today...first time we've witnessed that.

You can even go up a size+ with a Decker hunting terrier. Now those can take on coyotes, coons etc(in a small pack) and still great for the smaller rodent vermin. Sounds like she has bred hers up to almost decker size.

I had two ratties. They were some of the best dogs I ever had.
My standard ratty is nearly all white with some black on the back of the head, a black tear drop dead center on top her head and a small area of brown and black around one eye! My last one, a mini was a perfect tri color. I love ratties.
I have had three of them one was a stocky little teddy. I don't have one at the time even though I have other dogs. I truly miss not having a Rattie around. All three were different personalities with a certain commonality. They are very in tune with you, more than any other dogs I have owned.

All I know about them is they are relentlessly goofy.
My sister has one. She's a fearless ball of energy, there's nothing she can't get to or into and LOVES to swim. She actually swims more than anyone in the house. Lol. I don't know if its a breed characteristic or me comparing lola to my 2 Pitbul mixes, who are velcro dogs. but Lola's very independent and can be ambivalent to people. Always ready to play though.
I love all of your videos, but this one in particular is so perfect for me! I’ve been at a loss to figure out what my mutt is - I get Pitbull, lab, greyhound, German Shepard, Doberman. Everyone has a different opinion, and none of them made any sense based on her behavior or conformation. I had no idea rat terriers came in standard size, and definitely wouldn’t attach “smart” to “terrier”, as I’ve never known an intelligent, not-yappy little dog. I thought my dog was a kelpie mix for a while, but rat terrier makes WAY more sense. Her prey drive is out of this world and she’s whip-smart, but sensitive to correction - definitely a “flip-you-off” reaction, not a “I’m so sorry” reaction. She looks just like a rat terrier aside from ears that are up, down, or half depending other mood and 40-45lb as a female. Thank you this was super helpful!

If you're in the US, check your local animal shelters and rescue groups. Ratties are incredibly common here in part because, as she said in the video, so many other breeds go into the makeup. In a way, it might be one of the easiest breeds to create. Oh, and a lot of shelter ratties are listed as chihuahua, chihuahua mix, or terrier mix, so you just have to pay attention to what the individual dog looks like.
Just as some breeders, like the woman in the video, are very careful to place a dog with its ideal family, many shelters are no different. The shelter where we found my rattie knew the dogs' personalities well. They asked about our home, lifestyle, activity level, and brought our good boi out to meet us. The rest is history.

And if you can find them, the Schipperke and the Danish-Swedish farm dog.

My little girl is a mix about 20 pounds and hunts the tennis ball lacking prey. But when she can she has done in birds, possums even iguanas bigger than her. Totally fearless as said here. Yet at night she wants to curl up with daddy in bed. Super smart and when my niece arrived they became best friends…very patient with the child! I just love this sweetie! Energetic for sure but so fun.
I miss my rat terrier, he was a good boy. He was my first dog when I was a toddler, the whole neighborhood mourned his death. I didn't know that he left such an impact on people.
@alejandro brunner They really do and they're extremely intelligent. My dog (before he got killed) always knew how to get back home, which was good because my Dad didn't have a gate installed back then in the early 2000's.

How can you tell if your pup is ratty vs jack russell? Are their traits or qualities that help better distinguish them? Vet says mine is a mix of the two. Have always been curious.

Jack rats are common. My old boy was a jack rat. Definitely a lot more high energy than my current ratty.

I have my Mindy which is a deer legged rat terrier. She is the vets super model. All the vets she has had begged me to have her bred. But I did my part to control the shelter issues. She is oddly allergic to grass. She has to take Cakes just to go to the vet. She is s high energy dog. She even fusses me when I don't do something her way. She is my very healthy small human. I love her.
