I see what ya' did there...
Johnny rivers could do it all unlike elvis. He could write produce sing and play instruments and arrange. He was robbed a hit? What a load that is. And I love Elvis but come on keep it real.
JOHNNY RIVERS CAN'T SHINE ELVIS SHOES ❤
💯
Ever try to shine blue suede shoes?
Uh x skyooooze me, but this is a CHUCK BERRY song and nobody is mentioning him! What’s up with that?
So how did an unknown at the time performer beat Elvis to the studio and record this song first?
I wish someone would do one quality documentary on Elvis kindness, generosity, patriotism, SS Arizona fundraising, how he opened doors for black artists, he s not racist, etc, all the good he did
Also how he changed and impacted the culture, how many artists and groups to this day were influenced by him, one of the most iconic person of the century and loved almost 50 years after his death
Yeah that be nice I'm tired of all this 💩 crap ,love herein good things about elvis
They prefer all the lies and negativity instead of the good stories.
The
Watch Elvis fans matter. You will learn lots of positive stuff about Elivs from those that were the closest to him. ❤
Elvis always makes the best version In a song. Elvis was always kind to people. I feel a few people took advantage of him.
You mean basically his entire entourage?
I wouldn't agree in the case of "Hey Jude" though. 🤣
More than a few I would say.
Elvis was never a particularly good interpreter of Chuck Berry's songs. Start with his reading of "Maybelline" at the Louisiana Hayride.
@@user-ws5ri7yi8b Damn, Elvis did a good Promised Land. Some critics said it was his best rocker of the seventies! I preferred Burning Love myself.
Didn't know any of this!Johnny Rivers was no where near Elvis. So many were so jealous of Elvis they would do anything to try to be like him! Nobody came close to him !Never will❤
A lot of people outdid elvis in every way imaginable, but maybe not his "presence/charisma" but then elvis worked big witchcraft hacks too. But there were better voices out there than elvis, musicians, better or equal good looks, nicer, etc, though few had it all like elvis. In that one way he truly was the king. Just trying to be fair.
I love Elvis singing this song. After all he lived in Memphis. Elvis had many backstabbers pretending to be a friend of him. Some very close to him. Men and woman. How can people stand to be this way? Really these people are owned by the devil and are evil. 😢😢😢
Can you do a follow up on your previous post?
He should have done this live all the time. Elvis was always an awesome live performer!
Maybe the whole back story of what Johnny did to Elvis regarding Memphis Tennessee, Elvis did not want much to do with the song.
I had a signed autograph from Johnny Rivers. I met him as a teenager when I was working at a drive in as a car-hop. After I heard this story, I tore it up and tossed it in the garbage. What a jerk!! I love Elvis.❤❤❤
Love Summer Rain. Great song.
Elvis always looked after his true friends, Rivers wasn't a true friend he was a rat ☹️
Its a dirty trick he was so desperate for a hit song
@@fitnesswithkeith2578 He couldn't keep his wife for more than 4 years!
Rivers is a rude man. I watched him completely disrespect a woman in Oklahoma he once had “fun” with. She sent a photo back to him thinking he would show some recognition. The crew guy came back out with it signed:Johnny Rivers. He didn’t remember her or just didn’t care. After that I quit listening to his songs. They way she talked she flew out to California to be with him many times, she was discarded like a candy wrapper.
@@sdrounder9863big deal. That's what women are good for.
No one can sing anything like Elvis. He had emotion and soul.❤❤
Elvis voice wasn't the best, good, but not the best by far.
Rivers actions were a betrayal and a clear sign Rivers did not understand what a friend is. If Rivers had asked Elvis for the song, Elvis would have given it to him. Elvis loved helping his friends. Elvis had respect for his friends. This is why Elvis asked Carl Perkins if it would be OK with him for Elvis to record Blue Suede Shoes. If Carl had said "no", Elvis would not have recorded it. Elvis believed in people, but at the same time, he tested their loyalty by displaying to them something he knew they coveted. A few dollars, some jewelry, a song, Elvis found these to be a small price to pay to know who could be trusted.
Have an other vizw about blue suede shoes
Carl had a very serious accident and had to stay more than 6 months in the hospital fews times after released BSS and did not have enough revenue to pay the hospital
So Elvis recorded this song and refund the money to Carl to help him to pay the hospital
This wasn't an Elvis song to steal.
No one could OUT SHINE ELVIS ❤ ❤❤
Didn't know this was ever done live. Great find.
Yeah I was pretty suprised
@ElvisistheMan_ I believe he also did it in 75..maybe Asheville
Looks like vegas in 70 71 and 73...but it seems like he did it on tour summer 75...
Elvis was the bigger man.
It was admirable
Elvis like true friends around him! and if you not a true friend! "OUT" you go! And that's the way it should be! We love Elvis! ⚡TCB BABY⚡
I did see Elvis perform live in Concert in 1973. I also jumped on the hood of his Cadillac when he left the stadium as the big huge doors opened. I saw him. He saw me. He gave me the peace sign while holding a drink in the other hand.
"True story"
I will never forget.❤
Super.
Elvis was right, he sung it the best❤
I never knew he did that song in concert! It's nice to hear a different lineup. As for Johnny Rivers, that took nerve, unbelievable!
This is my favorite elvis song! Can’t believe it didn’t gain the traction it deserved
Is it really? 👍🏻
Thank you for bringing this out in " More of the open" . I did read abot this several years ago . I've been on youtube with rivers songs and have mentioned this situation on the responses. Just so his fan base can read what a "Turncoat " he is. He kissed up to Elvis until he got something from him, then he "got Selfish" No more Johnny rivers for me EVER . Again Thanks for exposing this to a much larger Fan base than his few followers
Hello, elvis didn't own the song.
@@sdrounder9863 Yes Possibly ????? thanks for the reply
@@brucehauge1391 Your correct - However the singer that brings a sing to the market first - has a lot to do with the success of the song . rivers SHOULDN'T HAVE TKEN THIS FROM ELVIS ( SUPPOSEDLY A FRIEND )
Always loved Elvis singing this track. I think there were two versions, 1963 & 1964. Also, the lyrics proved to be autobiographical given the break up of his marriage in Memphis and being away from his daughter (lisa) Marie.
I do like Johnnys version but I think it fit Elvis more, definitely.
Thank you for this video, I think Èlvis did the best version of Memphis Tennessee. I hear Elvis on the radio sing Memphis Tennessee or from his concerts. Anyway Elvis choosing his songs to sing he new very well what he could do and not do vocally. Elvis was a genius and genuine about his music and songs .❤🎉😊
Elvis does this so much better!!!!! I did not know this 😳 thanks David!
You’re welcome!
I read about Rivers pulling that on Elvis in several books one of them being Revaluations Drom Memphis Mafia, such a great book. T.C.B. 🤟
What an awful thing to do to a "friend"! Elvis' version , of course, beats all of them! I agree it may have been a big hit for Elvis, and I'm glad Elvis wanted nothing to do with Johnny after that! 😊
Always loved hearing Elvis sing this song. Your right David it could have been a Top 10. Elvis was robbed, he trusted Rivers.❤️🇦🇺🎶
I remember elvis singing this songat a concert thanks for sharing this
Well we will always remember elvis singing that song forever . For me who is Johnny River !! Long forgotten . No one can forget the Elvis name
This sounded great - on Elvis! Unfortunately envious people are always about 🙄(even worse when they claim to be a 'friend')
👑💫
Burton's solo is first class. This song should've been incorporated into the setlists. It would've been a highlight
That was Elvis for ever more❤✌️💯superb David for your uploading ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
Elvis the greatest performer ever.
Another nice find..
💯
We need a compilation of super-rarities like this, including the live version of "Raised On Rock," "Trouble," "Moody Blue" and quite a few more.
And return to sender,lol
@@vickyclausen4631 Yes!
@@modernretroradio993 raised on rock is not very good audio ,but I'll take it, lol
Basically when Elvis was about to recorded this song and rivers was over Elviss house after he rivers left the home rivers recorded the Memphis song .
When Elvis found out rivers had recorded his song Elvis apparently told his guys
Let him have his hit but I don’t ever want to see that SOB again .
Quote …
He wore a cape in 1974 one last time.
I believe 1972 was the big year for capes for Elvis.
y'a des gars qu'arrivaient pas à cheville d Elvis et qu'avaient la grosses têtes.
Elvis Presley était humble et super cooolll.
The king numero 1
Elvis should have released his version as a single in 1964. His version was different than Rivers' and was better. I agree, it would have been a major hit for Elvis.
Love Elvis's original version of this.Rivers is a xxxx.👑
Elvis’s version is so much better. A lot of people were and still are jealous of Elvis. Even after his passing he’s still talked about and respected 😊🙏
Great share, thanks Dave. 😊
Glad u liked! Thanks for watching .
Chuck Berry owns that song hands down. A signature song for Chuck Berry. Elvis did a good version of it as well. I didn’t know that Johnny Rivers did that. That was common. Elvis just cut Johnny off with silence. Now that’s telling.
I hate Chuck Berrys singing.
@@coollady2179 Understand that. Not everyone likes him.
I didn't know about the fact that Elvis performed this song live. Perhaps it would have been more frequent in the set list of shows if there hadn't been Rivers' opportunistic attitude in the past, and it would certainly be a greater success for Elvis. Unfortunately the sound quality of this 1973 version is not the best but you can feel a good vibe. Great video!
Yeah glad u liked it. Elvis obviously liked the song for him to add it in the Setlist years later. I agree with you that it would’ve been a bigger hit. Had Elvis have released it before rivers.
I like this version better than the recorded version.
I felt Elvis' studio version was too fast & this tempo of live version was much better. More like the Johnny Rivers tempo.
Boom! Just heard an elvis recording that I've never heard before. I was sure it was just gonna be a 30 second throwaway and "man I don't know that song I ain't doing that" 😅 Awesome video.
He looked fabulous here! The suit & cape are beautiful. The pic at 3:10 is One of a Kind. That would be a great poster! I personally liked the cape's.
I could never imagine anyone doing it more justice than Johnny Rivers absolutely love his singing I love Elvis too but idk I guess that was wrong of rivers but I think he has best version of it hands down lol 😂
Love this! I had no idea he sang this song ever! ❤
Interestingly Elvis did Johnny Rivers’s version on stage in 1973 without jungle beat drums and starts with J. Rivers guitar intro.
Always all songs Elvis original for be The king
Omg the nerve of this guy … for me ELVIS did it the BEST… ❤❤❤
I also heard this same story on another video a few months ago. Goes to show you how Elvis treated or reacted to people he knew after they deceived him. Elvis always showed total class 💕
Outstanding audio find👍👍👍
Elvis version is by far the best, ❤ Chuck Berry did it proud, Johnny Rivers In 3rd place thanks for Sharing
Elvis Presley recorded good versions of several Chuck Berry songs: "Memphis TN", "Too Much Monkey Business", and "Promised Land." "Johnny B Goode" was an in concert mainstay in the 70s. When in doubt, record a Chuck Berry tune. It's worked well for many!
Elvis's 1974 take on "Promised Land" was his highest charting post-"Burning Love" single on the Billboard pop singles chart. #14 fall 74. However, my favorite Chuck Berry number by Elvis is "Too Much Monkey Business" found on the FLAMING STAR album. Two of the founding fathers of rock & roll! (As for Johnny Rivers, I can take or leave the guy LOL)
I love any song Elvis Presley sings. Good job on finding this one David!I’ve heard it before but I’m not sure where…. Could be TV, radio or in my record collection, maybe. Thank you! PS I’m not a fan of the Chuck Berry version.
Haha yeah it sure was corny
The Chuck Berry version is terrible. Elvis sings it like the song was written for him. But every cover I have ever heard of Elvis he always does it better than the original. And usually better than any other version.
Elvis can sing better than anyone.. that includes JOHNNY RIVERS!!!! 😊
Summer Rain is pretty good.
@@weskittenPoor Side of Town is my favorite Johnny Rivers song
I got Elvis Birthday Tuesday January 8, 1985. Tuesday January 8, 1935 50 years apart. Momma named me Jesse.
I know that story from many years ago. There are not many people who remember Johnny Rivers, but we sure remember Elvis. Johnny must have had jealousy and resentment about Elvis to pull a trick like that. But, like Elvis said, "He (Johnny) needed a hit". Elvis was the bigger man.
I remember seeing Johnny Rivers singing that on the Dick Clark , l don’t blame Elvis about Rivers , it’s not right at all! 😮🙏🌸
Thank you for the information. I think I heard from the first video you put out. And thought about it not long ago trying to remember all the details. Elvis was so trusting and I think because he would never think of doing this to someone else. He told a reporter that he treated others like he would want to be treated. It wasn't hard, very simple. I can just hear his mother telling him when he was a kid. "Elvis just rember to treat others the way you want them treat you." I don't think Rivers would have had the guts to try to see Elvis again. Great reminder that there are vultures out there. Just pray they ask for forgivenes. If he would have written Elvis to forgive him, Elvis would have. I do believe that.
❤supi,thank you.
Awesome performance 👏 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Only Elvis can do this song!! And he’s seeing about Lisa obviously. He always sang songs that deeply touched him or was something that was going on in his life. Love chuck berry but no one could ever top Elvis on any song. Love your channel. Great job every time. Have a great day. Thk u.
Johnny rivers performed this song during the opening concert at the wiskyaGoGo in California on 15th january 1964. Elvis finished re-recording the song in Nashville on 12th January around midnight. He would not be back in graceland and receive visitors and friends before 13th in the evening or rather 14th. Now how likely is it that johnny travelled 3000 km from california where he lived to Memphis for one day considering that he had to be back in california for his concert in whisky aGoGo on 15th in the evening? Something else to consider is that johnnys single was only released in May after the album from the concert which was released in february became such a success. So johnny never recorded the song in a studio with the purpose to release it as a single. Also' when you listen to the two versions elvis' is much quicker. Both johnny and elvis were obviously inspired by lonnie mack's instrumental version in 1963 but i think johnny still had more elements from the original chuck berry version...so i am not convinced that johnny stole the arrangement. Now elvis may indeed have been upset but i think the most likely reason is that he was furious that he did not release the song himself as a single shortly after recording. And if elvis had really broken with johnny why would he have his single in his jukebox collection? To be reminded of the treaterous behaviour of a former friend? If you are into such stories why dont you check out whether elvis was not rather upset because of the b side of johnny s single where johnny made fun of elvis and the Beatles ( but here again i would say that elvis loved a joke!).
God bless Elvis and his legacy❤
Maybe because I love Elvis so much I am being partial, but no way Rivers could come close to E singing that. So sad to hear so many times of people who used and hurt our beautiful man. Elvis got screwed over a lot by people he trusted and thought were friends. It makes me so MAD!!! Thanks for sharing this with us. Have a great day.
Yeah, that was a dirty move!
Great video and story about this song Memphis Tennessee!
Thanks I believe your take on it!yes!
Wow! That live version sounded great! I’d never heard it before.
If you’re ever in Memphis, don’t look for Marie’s home. South side, high upon a ridge, half a mile from the (“old”) Mississippi bridge-Not a good place to be these days. Not sure it ever was.
David, I love it by them both but then again my number two favorite singer under Elvis is Johnny Rivers. No devil here David just being honest..TCB
Elvis also had Manson and the girls over a lot. Confirmed by LAPD and several authors.
For real?
Elvis The King !!!!!!!!!!
Elvis como el no habra nadie el mejor entre los mejores siempre sera el rey
According to the cover photo of the upcoming book “Elvis On Tour March 1974”, Elvis actually wore a cape at least once in 1974.
Would make an interesting video to determine the exact date of the last cape appearance.
Just a suggestion.
I am so glad to hear that he did the song live a decade later. He should have done more songs "off the set lists."
I knew the backstory with regarding JR. It's one of those things in life.
Chuck B. had good writing ability and excellent guitar skills. But his vocals were subpar.
I appreciate your channel and these nuggets.
Rivers betrayed Elvis and burned their bridges. I bet Rivers regretted that ever since. Then again who knows, he possibly really didn’t care if he lost a friend
Elvis had a big hit with " Devil in disguise " in 1963 , but Memphis Tennessee would've been bigger a hit for him .
@Elvisistheman: thanks for your Info, you do a great job! I think you're right, it could be his No1 Hit.. The best Version I heared from Elvis is the one from summer 75...
Thank you for your work!!
Contrast this to Elvis' insistence that RCA not release his version of "Blue Suede Shoes" until Carl Perkins' version had finished its chart run.
Elvis also did this song in one of his shows in 1970.. but not completely
Just a little FYI. This a Chuck Berry song. He wrote it. He sang it. He played guitar on it.
Johnny Rivers pulled a sneaky one on 'Deke Rivers'. Johnny B. No-Good.
Yes, a true story. As far as I know, Rivers asked Elvis to play the song in question several times. Rivers had a hit but lost Elvis's friendship. Not the best decision in the long run...
Another missed hit was Wooden Heart. RCA decided not to release it as a single. A producer grabbed an obscure singer and immediately cut it. Number one record denied . I would suspect the Colonel went crazy.
Obscure singer?
An incredible find! Never heard this live version by Elvis. Thank you! It would be great if sound engineers could improve it for release. Amazing what they can do these days.
Yeah, that would be nice if they could clean this up so we can hear it better
Też tak uważam,wspaniałe,thank you.
I believe the Big O, Roy Orbison did a version too
I believe that story too, Rivers did Elvis dirty, I prefer Elvis version! Wish that 73 concert was cleaner, nice performance! TCB⚡️
----------- Actually Four #1 songs were missed
for Elvis that RCA didn't release early on. The other 2 being Wooden Heart (Joe Dowell stole the arrangement exactly as done on the GI Blues album, with alternating English/German, as well as instrumentation); and Terry Stafford with Suspicion (some different instrumentation, but all else was similar). With just these 3, Elvis would be tied for #1 songs with the Beatles. I believe he would have had a 4th one if he wasn't so nice to Carl Perkins and showcased Blue Suede Shows early (aka, "pulling a Johnny Rivers), but Elvis was a gentleman
I have only heard Chuck Berry and Elvis version. Elvis version rocked. It is sensational. And it has all the feeling he had with Priscilla taking Lisa MARIE away.
Similar to a scenario from Jailhouse Rock.
Yep, Elvis’ karma lol
According to Marty Elvis said let the little bastard have his hit.
Haha
And he did and had 17 top 40 hits.
That wasn’t a very good recording of Elvis singing that song….However, it ROCKED!!! I loved hearing that! And Elvis should have released it, and he should have performed it live all the time!! Memphis was Elvis’s town! Elvis should have claimed that song, and really put his spin on it and jammed that song out all the time!!! I think it would have made sense, since that was his town that he lived in, he showed devotion to that town! And I thought he sounded fantastic singing it!!!
Who cares about that other guy, Elvis would have knocked it out of the park the park with that song!🎶 ❤
There is always someone ready to take advantage. I don't remember Johnny Rivers making it very big so I guess it didn't help him as much as he had hoped.
Johnny's producer Lou Adler claimed responsibility for the release of Memphis.
Elvis didn't banish Johnny Rivers, as pictures show Elvis and Johnny riding their motorbikes together in Califoria in 1966.
Elvis may have been upset but he remained friends with Johnny Rivers.
Ughhhh idk about that. I do remember those bike pics but Elvis definitely kicked him out of his friend zone.
@ElvisistheMan_ No, the pictures prove he was still in Elvis' circle. Johnny also saw Elvis in Vegas in the '70's. The story is a "myth"
I believe those pictures you are referring to are actually Elvis and Larry Geller. He resembles Johnny.
@@jennyjorgensen9935 Definitely not Larry Geller.
Not heard of this story. Thought Elvis based his version on the Rivers version. Both Chuck and Rivers are great. Apt that Elvis should record this song. French star Johnny Hallyday also recorded it based his version on the Elvis/Rivers version. Great songs are always covered. If the story is true how Rivers copied EP then issued first, then morally it's not right.
Morally it was not right. I agree
Neil Sedaka did the same think with laughter in the rain! he wrote it but someone else recorded it and it would have been a hit for her! Sedaka rushed to get his version out and claimed he hit first! Elvis learned a lesson not to let people know what he was going to release! Dick Clarke had everything to do with Johnny Rivers releasing the song first! Clarke hated Col. Tom Parker and resented him not allowing Elvis to be on American Bandstand! Clarke controlled many record labels at one time before the government make him break them up because of a monopoly! Clarke never got access to Elvis and it drove him crazy because he felt like he was the spokesperson for the young people fdor new music!
Oooohhh. Elvis went ballistic. My source is "Elis Aaron Presley: Revelations From The Memphis Mafia." That book has me shook. I finished it today. If you want to know ALL the details and tea from what it was like to live with Elvis, this is it. Written by Alana Nash. If you think it was a cool lifestyle don't read it. 😳 TCB ⚡️
Best version. George Thorogood .
I'm such a fan of yours and been a subscriber for a long time. May I ask a non-related question that I think you will know. Unchained Melody is a song we both mutually love. What does he say to Charlie Hodge in '77' at the piano is it." hang with me?" I simply can't figure it out.
Of course man, I’m glad you’ve been a subscriber so long and like the channel. Yes we do both like that song. I think he’s actually telling the band “hit me with it. “watch the video again and I think you’ll see.
