    great video, the hardest part was definitely getting the existing battery out, but it was so satisfying to pull it out, like giving birth, as you said. I bought the Ohmu battery so installation was easy and im looking forward to replacement in the future being a bit easier as well because of the slightly smaller size and low weight. thanks.

    The Lithium battery costs on BattMobile $439.- , but the problem is charging at low temperatures (no info for this found).
    Usually LiFePO4 only can be charged obove 40°F (0°C). The original Tesla Battery charges from -10°F (-23°C) to + 140°F (60°C).

      Completely agree, I hope TESLA some day offers my batteries as an option with a new vehicle; but we're a long way from being ready for that sort of volume. We are building slowly but surely and within our means so we don't become over-leveraged and present too much risk and volatility! We will make another video with the pre-facelift D model TESLA (all XXD tesla will have same battery arrangement) as soon as we get our hands on one locally (Phoenix area)!

And also address the battery warning message that posters have complained about.

    Curious what the performance differences could be in colder climates-- this might be great in Phoenix, but surely Tesla had a reason to do what they did. I'm leery of second guessing their engineers, but also running my original battery 3+ years in with the warranty running out, so likely tackling this myself.

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  Před 7 lety +1

      We are confident in our batteries to perform well in a TESLA vehicle application down to around 0F... Below this temperature we believe the system will still perform but we haven't had the opportunity to properly test and verify this and find the "extreme" points where they will fail to function... So it depends on how cold you are referring to.

      @@hpartsch Performance is still, as expected, excellent in any cold weather climates we have shipped batteries to. Recently we have built our own in-house testing lab to advance this discussion further. In-house testing has revealed that performance degradation and safety of our batteries is excellent, so far we have only gone down to -25 Celsius, but our tests are at -25 Celsius for a continuous week at a time, which very few vehicles would ever experience (would have to not plug it in or garage it and leave it outside in sub -25C temperatures for a continuous week, I don't believe anyone would do this to their tesla, I could be wrong though). We are continuously going lower and lower in temperature and hope to report on -30C and even -35C and finally -40C test results in the next few months.

    Had you considered using using SuperCapacitors instead of Li-ion cells and what would be the drawbacks to taking that approach ?

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  Před 7 lety +1

      The drawback for using SuperCapacitors as a battery is that they don't have the energy density of Lithium batteries (meaning need more space and weight to get same capacity) and also they don't hold their charge well over a sustained period of time (forcing the DC/DC to be nearly always on, which would overwork it and cause premature DC/DC failures)... It's a neat idea though, generally capacitors are better suited than batteries when enormous amounts of current output are needed in a brief time, this isn't the case with a 12V battery in the tesla vehicle.
      Thank you for your comments on my video!

    • @dogphlap6749
      @dogphlap6749 Před 7 lety

      True the energy density both gravimetric and volumetric is poor for SuperCapacitors but you only need a fairly small amount of stored energy beyond the traction battery in an electric car, just enough to keep the electronics going really. I was unaware SuperCapacitors had such high leakage. I bow to your greater knowledge on this matter.

    I realise it's too easy to criticise motor manufacturers but really, burying away a battery like that is quite ridiculous. With that amount of room in the 'Frunk' one would have thought it could have occupied a space there, as it seems to be quite small.

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  Před 7 lety

      Yeah, but we all like big frunks don't we? Don't want to eat up that valuable real-estate... I actually totally agree with you though, some folks run a set of jumper cables (or something more permanent) from the terminals to the lugs and position the battery in the frunk for easy access. When we were doing our R&D with a Model S 85 we ran it this way to give ourselves easy access to the system for monitoring/tracking-data.

      @@OhmmuEnergy That's understandable. Elon has stated in the past that Tesla tried looking for an alternative to the 12v lead acid battery but didn't find anything @ the time. Perhaps your products weren't available @ that time. Maybe if you tried dipping your metaphorical toe in the water? It would be fairly important to be able to supply @ scale prior to any approach given Tesla's explosion in their rate of production in order to have any chance of them taking Ohmmu Energy seriously should your product prove to be potentially viable from Tesla's point of view.
      Tesla have very tight margins & judging by the Q4 earnings conference call likely to get tighter & I'm guessing this also applies to their arrangements with suppliers. I've no idea if or how your company would be a good fit under those conditions.
      Tesla may prove to be different & if not, previous experience will @ the very least have highlighted the pitfalls in advance. Contractually speaking, this would mean ensuring that you leave adequate escape hatches @ each stage of any agreement in case you feel the need to jump ship. At the risk of telling my granny how to suck eggs since you've been in business for some time, I can only assume you've ensured that you own the rights to your technology, preferably thru patent/s.
      Nothing ventured, nothing gained as the saying goes. Best of luck should you decide to see if the waters are warm enough to swim in.

    I wonder why Tesla put LEAD batteries in there Car's in the first place. Defeats the purpose of saving the environment if you're not 100%. I hope they have recycling plans in place for all broken down Tesla's. Would like to see a continuous loop for all Tesla vehicles.

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  Před 7 lety +1

      When I was at the grand opening for the Gigafactory last year in July Elon and co mentioned this is something they are working towards (full loop of recycling and reusing the lithium battery contents). Yeah, I think they did LEAD because it is cheap and well-known in the industry (automotive) vs. try to create a new 12V battery altogether, it was simpler for them to get up and running...

      @cytranic8602 Před 7 lety +1

      Why does Tesla need a 12v battery at All? A 12volt converter tied to the 85Kw battery wont do?

    • @OhmmuEnergy
      @OhmmuEnergy  Před 7 lety +2

      What happens when you just took a long road trip and are pulling into your destination with only 1-2kWh left in your battery (heck, say 10kWh left) but won't be able to charge for a week or two... The car's computer systems (and other 12V loads) are pulling ~60W all the time so that is 1.4kWh per 24hrs; you would deplete your main-pack to absolute 0% within a few days in this scenario and once you've done this all your computers would shut down... Once they have shut down, you can't plug the car in and get it charging b/c there would be nothing to establish communication with the charger and start things off in the charge cycle...
      Well, without the 12V battery this scenario results in a $30-40K battery replacement. Having the 12V battery there is essential to the safety of the vehicle in certain scenarios.
      I understand it isn't an "every day" thing for most owners to use the vehicle that way but if it would be a "fatal flaw" quickly pointed out when it did happen (and certainly that situation happens all the time somewhere in the world)...

    • @Mr_Battlefield
      @Mr_Battlefield Před 7 lety

      Cytranic I honestly don't know why they need a 12V battery. I only assume it's used as a backup system more then anything. The more stranger question is why did they use a LEAD battery instead of a Lithium battery in the first place.

    • @somejoe7777
      @somejoe7777 Před 7 lety +3

      The Tesla needs a 12V battery system because only the drive units, cabin heater, and A/C run on the main pack DC power (400V). All other systems, including electronics, computers, power windows, etc. run on 12V because that's a well-established automotive standard. In addition to that, safety requirements for electric cars require that the main pack DC power (400V) run through a contactor that can shut off the high voltage when it's not needed. When the car is parked, that contactor drops out, removing high voltage from the car. The 12V is needed to run the electronics systems and then power up the contactor when the main pack is needed again.
      A lead-acid battery was chosen for the 12V battery because lead-acid chemistry can handle powering systems in very cold weather and can be charged without a temperature management/BMS system..

      Best way to get the little hooks to stay is to actually use duct-tape on them, tape them into position standing straight upright.
      In my video here the vehicle didn't have that strap in place prior to the install and I didn't add it back in either, they likely left it off because it is a headache and I wasn't going to disagree with that presumption and add one back in there!
      You are right, this is an over-sight for sure, we wrote the instruction manual based on this video so that element was missing from the manual as well. The two best bits of advice: telescoping magnet helps to grab and align things and duct tape helps keep the support arms in place until you get the strap back in place on top.
