Thank you so much for posting this! -couldn't understand the help guide on Obsidian. Your explanation is very good!
happy to know you found it helpful! appreciate the kind words
This video really helped me get Obsidian Sync setup on my phone. Thanks.
Pro tip. Obsidian sync will increase in price (forever) on September 30 2021. So even if you only pay for 1 month now, you'll have lifetime access to the cheaper price! (Again not sponsored, but hopefully this tip can save you money)
Great video SantiâŠI use iCloud and it works great for me. That said I might sign up for a month for the lifetime deal..good tip!
@@nigelthompson8312 Is easy to synchronize everything with iCloud? Do you need to code or something like that? I would like to have all my devices (Ipad, Mac and Iphone) synchronized , but I still donât know if I should upgrade to Obsidian sync :c
@@nigelthompson8312 awesome happy to hear you have it all set with icloud, but yeah always worth reserving a spot as early bird in case you ever need Obsidian sync!
Thanks for watching!
Are you sure about this? I can't find anything related to this on the web. If that's the case I will def purchase 1 month now.
Thanks for the cool vid.
Just saw a tweet. Purchased!
â@@ignasiespi Hey, thanks for watching and yes, I'm sure! more info on this is is only available once you join the discord Obsidian community (which is free to join) once you have access to it (through this link)

Totally agree man, troubleshooting it is a headache and it takes a lot of our time.
Awesome job, got my mac and galaxy ultra synched up easily thanks to this.
On my to do list today was figuring this out ... Santi to the rescue! (Again)
no way! perfect timing, thanks for the support!!
Thanks man, this was awesome
Great guide! Thanks for your help
Thanks Janson, appreciate it
super clear thanks!
This is the only video that really helped me.
that's awesome, happy to hear that!!
Great video. I am just really getting into Obsidian. While I primarily use all apple devices, the big drawback to using iCloud is that itâs not easy to NOT sync appearances. Downside is moving to obsidian sync results in a lot of unsupported file names and potentially broken backlinks when importing files from other services.
thanks! Obsidian sync is great if you just want to sync what's insideo of your Obsidian vault, which is mosly .md plain text files. What are the unsupported files you are thinking of?
I use Obsiadian Sync with my whole school class. Its amazing!
No way! that's so cool, does everyone like it?
thank you for the great video...its very help for me
Hey man, loved your video! Keep it up! Just a quick question, what launcher and keyboard are you using on your phone man? Looks really nice:0
thanks man! glad you asked, I just made a video all about it, check it out:
czcams.com/video/S8Zd80s9L3I/video.html
Thanks a lot!
I would totally roll with Obsidian Sync if it offered collaboration options... Instead, I've been looking at encrypted cloud servers, which wouldn't get quite as involved as the Obsidian plugin, but should effectively sync notes across devices and people
I get you that sounds good, yeah I agree that collaboration would be incredible with Obsidian sync, but like you said thankfully there are some good alternatives for syncing Obsidian files for sure
helpful video, thanks! i agree with you, paying the fee is worth the reliability and hassle free life
Thanks boss
Great vid. To bad I missed the deadline for early adoptor pricing. This does seem good. Especially as a Android user.
definitely, sorry to hear that man, it's definitely a good service. best of luck Michael!
Is there a way to see the space I have used already in Obsidian Sync?
Thank you for this great Video !
What about attachs ? How big should die attachs can be and how big is the Cloud store ?
Excellent video. How does it handle shortcut keys? I'm using macOS and Linux, so they are different.
Thank you so much, Santi. I'm a new Obsidian user... this video was quite useful; I'm certainly going to go for Obsidian Sync to alleviate the synchronisation problem. Even though I work in technology industry, I really want to simplify my life since I already deal with complex difficulties at work. One less thing to worry about
I wish I'd found this way of notetaking sooner, but I guess it's not too late.
Question: Do you have recommendation for Work vs Personal notes? should they be just one folder in obsidian or separate them out?
happy to hear you are enjoying Obsidian! and yeah Sync is definitely worth it to simplify things!
Regarding your question, that's a tricky one, I personally don't have a clear division between personal and work. I'd recommend having everything under one same vault, but if you need to you can divide or categorize things in sub-folders, or tags or even by links.
Perhaps sub-folders is the easiest way to keep things separated, but it's gonna take some experimentation to see what works for you.
I have a podcast episode on "Obsidian tags vs folders vs links" that might help
anchor.fm/philoctivity/episodes/4---Links-vs-Tags-vs-Folders-evugom/a-a5dkefh
Best of luck!
how long in average was your synching process?
hey, santi great video! btw I noticed your mobile theme and keyboard. They looked pretty cool. Can you mention them? I would love to check them out.
Hey Som, happy to know you enjoyed the video! yeah if there are enough people interested I might make a video covering my android setup.
I'm using an app called "o-launcher" for the overall minimalist look.
And the keyboard is really cool it's called "message ease" it takes around a week to get used to it, but after getting used to it, it's a much nicer alternative
thanks santi!
Thank you
happy to help! thanks for watching
Thank you for the detailed video. How can I have an sync icon on Obsidian Mobile (Android) in order to quickly see if the sync completed or not?
Hi, just curious, are PDFs within the vault also synchronized? Thanks if you answer me
What a cumbersome and user-unfriendly way of syncing text files between two devices.
This is how it SHOUD be:
1. Install the Android or iOS app
2. Login
I know what you mean, it's definitely a lot more cumbersome than most apps. The reason they do this, is because Obsidian is made for people who want to own their files. If that's not a priority for you Tana might be a better solution, or even Notion
Also for Obsidian this is the way they make a profit somehow, since everything else in Obsidian is free
But I agree with the frustration of how cumbersome this process is
Informative video, thank you! I am considering starting a obsidian database. Does it make a difference whether you start a vault on the mobile app or in a pc? (Currently on holidays)
Thank you!
hey, nice one. no don't worry its the same database. it doesn't matter if you create it on mobile or desktop, but I think its a bit easier to start on desktop to understand hoe files are stored. then using Obsidian sync you can open the same database/folder on mobile and sync them
I hope that helps, enjoy your holiday
Hey Santi,
I'm new to using Obsidian and also paid for an annual Obsidian Sync sub.
If I have Obsidian Sync, does that mean I do not need to use Google Drive to sync my files in Obsidian?
What do you think the best path for me to use Obsidian across my devices? Thanks in advanced!
My devices are:
- Windows Desktop
- Macbook Air
- iPhone 12 mini
Hey! awesome yeah Obsidian sync should replace Google Drive, you place your files in a folder outside of GDrive and then sync it into other devices. I know first sync is a bit tricky. If you need a bit more personalized help, would be awesome to have you in my community: www.santiyounger.com/community
đœ (after a dramatic 2 year pause đ)
hahahaha nice!
How to sync Existing Vault instead of creating a new one?
Please have a video covering your Android setup!
happy to know you like it, will add it to my list of videos to make! thanks for the support
Hey man great video! Earned my like and subscription. I'm using Obsidian mainly on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S7. I'm having a hard time on customizing it with CSS files. I'm trying to put my css file on my vaults folder but it doesn't work. Can you shed me some light here? Thanks!
happy to know you liked the video man, regarding CSS are you having trouble syincing your CSS snippets? or are you hving trouble gettin, CSS code to work in general?
@@SantiYounger css files in general. Even if I get a css file from the community, I'm unable to load it into Obsidian. I know this doesn't have much to do with the subject of your video, but this is killing me... đ
Stressing that I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7.
So my obisidian PC folder is 68Gb. Does that mean it will eat 68Gb on my phone - which i cannot spare? Can't it just read whats on the PC and alter that? Or perhaps whats on the web? Perhaps Obsidian publish is better?
Hey, yeah so whatever the file size of your folder that's technically what syncs, however Obsidian sync does have a file size limit of 10GB
it sounds like you have either videos or a million images in your Obsidian folder right?
I'd recommend having two vaults, one with all your heavy files that you only keep in your desktop and a separate lighter one that you can use to sync with your phone
Hey Santi! Is there a way to sync an existing vault instead of a new one?
yes for sure! with Obsidian sync you can sync several vaults ( I think the limit is 4, but don't quote me on that) And yes you can definitely use it for your exisiting vault
@@SantiYounger But how to do it? I tried but I dont know how to exactly do it
@@AsadAli-om9ir hey here's more info on it: help.obsidian.md/Obsidian+Sync/Set+up+Obsidian+Sync
with all this complexity, what does Obsidian do that makes it stand out compared to other note taking apps such as notion, standard note, simplenote, and the likes?
It all comes down to local files. With Obsidian you own your notes on your computer forever as long as you take care of your data, while using a modern app. Opposed to cloud services that might close their company at any point and take all your notes with them
I'm syncing everything via iCloud right now. It's ok but it certainly causes some issues with duplicate files
is syncing feature a premium?
is that the one-time payment or the subscription payment?
it's a subscription payment, however you could instead use something like dropbox, Obsidian sync just makes things easier
One of your epic questions assumes that matter exists/ You know what that actually is. đœ
Syncthing is a very easy and free alternative
nice, havn't heard of it. I just checked the website, looks good. do you use it to sync from windows to android?
@@SantiYounger isn't it possible to simply pulg your android in at the end of the day and drag the saved .obsisian files over to desktop Obsidian and voila?
@@101RealTalker yes that's possible, but if I'm writing onto the same note both on PC and on mobile, at the end of the day I'd have conflicting files, which I'd have to fix manually
But it's definitely possible, just not the best use of time in my opinion
@@SantiYounger ah, I seeđ.... suppose my case use bias didn't highlight that to me, since I take speech-to-text notes everyday on the fly via basic Gmail draft always open on my phone, that I open next morning from laptop and copy/paste over whatever is worth keeping in their particular catagories....been doing that for years with rtr files, but it finally felt beyond my mental glue, then I found Obsidian last week and love it, but not sure I need the app....only upside I can see would be the ability to do laptop editing/linking on the fly instead of specific time allotted for the same taskđ€

You are the man! the first to notice!!

5:05 can someone please explain this monstrosity of a keyboard at the bottom of his screen? O_o
What's up! it's a called "message ease keyboard" it's an awesome way to type faster (after some practice) on the phone, it's great for typing with one hand (I'm using it now to type this)
it's an awesome keyboard made for those that like to learn new random stuff
I mentioned it in a video here (in minute 6:40)
czcams.com/video/S8Zd80s9L3I/video.html
we must purchase right?
yeah Obsidian sync is an additional optional service that the guys at Obsidian provide, however there are some good alternatives like Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud that depending on your devices it could be more than enough
I honestly find it kinda useless, at least the standard variant. 1 GB of storage is literally nothing if you plan on including some files here and there. I'll just keep using I-cloud for now, works perfectly fine too
Obsidian makes it unnecessarily hard to use Obsidian sync :(
I agree it should be simpler, compared to something like Notion or almost every cloud stored app. But the complexity of it is due to the fact that Obsidian stores files locally, which to me is a huge advantage for truly owning my notes. But I do agree it'd be great for it to be easier
The sync is free?
Yes ... without a doubt its worth sync cost of a killer (smh) 10 USD per month.
hold on! so what kind of key board are you using on your phone?
hey, I mentioned it on this video: czcams.com/video/S8Zd80s9L3I/video.html
hey
Hi
Sorry, I cannot show your explication until the end, because the music very annoying.
Was it too loud for you?
Oy vey, lol, talk about unnecessary entropy, this is what Bruce Lee spoke about when he touted "Don't confuse the finger for the Moon".... all this ~using one app to facilitate another, accounts linked to accounts, trying to avoid purchases, Data encryption security / privacy, yada yada~...
...you (people in general) are confusing sync (finger) for convenience (moon), when all that is required to arrive at the same desired output, is a good old-fashioned wire ('input' pun intended)
Just plug in your phone for all of half a millisecond, copy your desktop Obsidian folder over to your phone in a blip, go about your day using mobile version anywhere, and just reverse this process when you want to pick up where you left off at home.
No need to have multiple apps, silly accounts, it's free and remove the discussion of Cyber security all together...what the hell is the problem, lol.
.... anything less than this understanding is to fall for the illusion that you need something that you in fact do not. Sophisticated procrastination is real, just use the damn dinosaur wire and move on...now what's for lunch? ;)
(and my vault is exactly 1,932,856 words as of this post, btw, in case anyone is going to try and say it's not practical, the folder transfers flawlessly every time, I thought when canvas came on scene it would slow it down, but nope, lol)
I'll reflect on that Bruce Lee quote, nice reflections. In terms of a practical solution Im not sure I agree with manually transferring files every time, fair enough if that works for you, but I think that'd be a big time waster for most people.
I rather build habits that contribute to my growth, rather than use my time in inefficient ways that a computer can do better than I can.
But again I respect if this works for you, I just write this for others. I believe in efficiency and leveraging technology to free my time, so that I can use that time wisely. I'm still on the path to improve this on myself, but I think it's a worthy pursue
@@SantiYounger If you reverse-engineer the math, even if you use obsidian / sync 200 times a month, what you are saying is a waste of time for 2 seconds to use a measly wire,
^would add up to where you are basically spending $10 a month for an ongoing subscription, to save all of 6 minutes, which is to say, if at bare minimum you make minimum wage, you spent an hour of your life only to save 6 minutes of time,
^so the real waste when employing the MIT derived model of SystemsThinking, sees the burden was just shifted is all, and hiding in a neighboring influence.
If you use obsidian less than 200 times a month, this fact is exponentially against you, showing you wasted time at work to pay for something that did not return its weight in gold....these nuggets add up.
(and Bruce Lee got that from Confucius, lol)
@@justsayin2620 interesting, but I disagree, time is more valuable than money in my opinion.
@@SantiYounger goodness gracious, "finger for the Moonâ model strikes again (playfully humorous tone), the emphasis from the example was that of the same accord, agreeing, that the time is of higher value than the money to spend paying for both sync, and/or the time to use multiple apps. It highlights time is inadvertently wasted by you spending money on it, because the time it took to make the money does not compare to the currency exchange later, so yes, exactly, the money spent represents time traded for the service that doesn't save the equivalent amount of time it took to earn the money to spend on the illusion of the difference. Yes, life is this intricate, and consumerism leverages/banks on you/no one paying attention to it đ đđ€čđ§ź
