Uvalde father Brett Cross reacts to DOJ's Uvalde school shooting report

  • A Department of Justice review of the police response to the mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school found “cascading failures of leadership, decision-making, tactics, policy and training.”
The review, which was based on hundreds of interviews with police and others, said the biggest mistake officers made that day was considering the shooter a barricaded person and not an active shooter even though children were still trapped in the classrooms with him.
The report says officers made a critical mistake when they retreated after being fired upon initially, even though they knew, or should have known, that the gunman was still a threat because the shooter fired at least one shot during the standoff and a student called 911 from inside the classroom.
Still, the report says, officers on scene concentrated on evacuating people from elsewhere in the building and spent considerable time hunting keys to the classroom containing the shooter instead of confronting him.
“An active shooter with access to victims should never be considered and treated as a barricaded subject,” the report states. “Evacuations in such circumstances must be conducted in the most expeditious manner, limited to those immediately in harm’s way, and not at the expense of the priority to eliminate the threat.”

The report revealed that those hundreds officers gathering around the school did not have appropriate training to deal with msss shooting. Also it is horrible to know the fact that one officer called the children "if you need help, ask for help!" to which a child shouted "help!" which was heard by the shooter, who then entered the room where the child was hiding and shot the kid.... Unbelievable...one officer's voice invited unnecessary shooting....

A law enforcement officials job is to protect and serve. If they are too cowardly to protect and therefore fail to serve, then they need to retire or quit their job. Clearly all those officers involved in the Uvalde school shooting should lose their police certifications for failure to fulfill their obligations and for their COWARDLY lack of action!

@DistrustHumanz: The cult of cop worship is strong all across the US. There are reasons why police reform, such as it is, has come to a dead end in the US and why police accountability usually, only symbolically, only occurs for people in certain communities in the face of sustained unrest and protest as if it is still 1968. I doubt that the AG's report will do any more than collect dust just as similar reports about the sorry state of US policing have been doing for decades.

    • @Dan-di9jd

What exactly did they do that was cowardly? They are all on the job. They have to listen to command and leaders. If it is a lack of training that is going on here, then they need the proper resources to do it. If you read the report, the problem is the gunman barricaded himself into a closet. If you know anything about firearms, the rounds are ineffective as soon as they pass a barrier such as a thick doorframe. The gunman had full view of the room and was ready to ambush. They needed a tactical team to enter and due to a failure in communication that didn't happen until the border patrol came in with a shield and set up a team to enter. You should really be directing your anger to the school though because why would any school leave doors open? Just some strange person could enter regardless but the worst possible thing happened. Had the door been locked, the worst thing that would have happened is a shootout with the police and nobody would really say anything else about it.

@@Dan-di9jd I wouldn't push the "cowardness" narrative either. But that doesn't absolve the reinforced company of law enforcement that appeared on the scene of its responsibility or its failure to uphold the oaths that each and every one of those officers took. The obvious display of Indecision, the failure to follow basic protocol which requires moving towards the gunfire and attacking the threat or threats with the resources and intel that is available (the gunman is going to have an initial tactical advantage in most cases, not just at Uvalde) as well as the obvious lack of a clear chain of command, etc. lead me to make charges of gross incompetence. None of that can be pushed off onto the school personnel who are not police or soldiers. The "cult of cop" in the US gets in the way of clear analysis of situations like this and it has hindered genuine reform of police departments all across the country for generations. The problems of US policing are deep, they didn't start at Uvalde and they haven't ended in its aftermath.

"Ramos, 18 broke into the school [Robb Elementary] despite being confronted outside by an officer who did not open fire."
A Uvalde Police officer who did not open fire.
Meanwhile, "Half of the parents...wanted to go in there [Robb Elementary] without vests, without guns to get their f****** kids" quoted a man on the scene.
And that's the difference between heroes and Uvalde police.
Unarmed citizens were willing to put their lives on the line to save children, while Uvalde police "confronted the shooter outside and did not open fire."
Who are you protecting? Who did you protect in this situation???
I saw a video of a Uvalde police officer pinning down a hysterical parent to the ground. You can hear gunshots going off while the Uvalde police are harassing parents.
    Let me say that AGAIN.
There is video online of Uvalde police officers PINNING hysterical parents to the ground while gunshots can be heard in the background....the police focused on the unarmed parents... UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY. BECAUSE VIDEO EXISTS.
If it was YOUR kids. The police would have pinned YOU DOWN to the ground and put a knee on your neck, instead of saving your children.
    Who are you serving?
Google the videos for proof. Google the video of parents pleading with Uvalde police to intervene during the shooting, the Uvalde police get confrontational and even pin a parent to the ground. They don't get their guns and storm the school in the video, instead they harass crying parents. Google it for proof!
There are parents with dead children and the Uvalde police department ignored their pleas. Video exists of this.
These officers might not face charges - but the video will always exist.
I hope you give a speech at your daughters wedding, or your retirement party - remember everyone knows what you did May 22 2022.
Do you think people forgot? Because you will live with your actions FOREVER. This incident will outlive you.
When you eventually forget what happened due to dementia....guess what?
Your care takers will remember. Your family will remember what you did.
Get ready for life as complicit murderers.
Seriously enjoy your daughters wedding. Give a speech. But know what everyone is thinking about you.
And when you are gone... The video will STILL exist. :)
    You will never escape it.
So etch it onto your graves. Set it in stone.
    "here lies BLANK
During the Uvalde mass shooting May 22, 2022...he did nothing"
The videos of the Uvalde officers ignoring parents will never go away. That's your legacy now. That's who you were raised to be. Your mother's raised you to pin parents instead of save children....every one of your mother's is a F*** Up.
And that's how your friends, family and community will remember you. They will remember you harassing parents, and pinning them to the asphalt while their children were being murdered. When you are all gone, those videos will remain and your actions that day will never be forgotten.
    You don't help people.
You made a lot of lives worse that day.
Quit. Or do the world a favor and go away forever.
Karma can wait a lifetime, Karma does not forget. Let's leave it to the universe to decide, and may karma bless each one of you with everything you ever deserved.

“Neither the Constitution, nor state law, impose a general duty upon police officers or other governmental officials to protect individual persons from harm - even when they know the harm will occur,” said Darren L. Hutchinson, a professor and associate dean at the University of Florida School of Law. “Police can watch someone attack you, refuse to intervene and not violate the Constitution.”
The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the government has only a duty to protect persons who are “in custody,” he pointed out.

I read the report. While the report does in fact list failures, the actions of the police in the hallway was correct based on the reports and status of the gunman. He was hiding in a closet ready to ambush anyone coming in. He probably took shots out of it hoping they would rush in but the fact is a door frame is enough to substantially slow a bullet down enough to not be very effective. As such the shooter has full view of the room and able to hit anyone coming in. As such, the only fault really is not being able to rapidly deploy a tactical team into the building and instead had to wait until someone with a shield arrived and then they were able to deploy. The problem is that they're ill-equipped to handled this kind of situation but the actual fault is more on the school and inability to hardened the doors. How can a door be left open for anyone to enter? And on top of that, someone noticed a man with a gun walking towards the school and they should have immediately went into lock down. The failure is really on the school and anger should be directed towards them. Had the door been locked the shooter would have never even carried out anything.

    • @Dan-di9jd
      @Dan-di9jd Před 4 měsíci

There are three main concerns with the police response: communication (many of them unable to communicate with one officer stating he did not even bring a radio in when he initially responded because he noticed the gunman and was trying to respond). Then there was a failure in tactics in that people were coming in but no one was really communicating what was going on or building up a tactical team to enter. Instead the border patrol agent who came in later managed to assemble a team and went in properly but before that everyone knew the gunman was in the closet and barricaded but they didn't know the next steps. The last concern really is that the school itself should have been in lock down which would have prevented all this entirely.
