That is a nice tip which I didn't know and I will try it on my Stihl saw which I can't get to crank because the rope won't come out like it should when I try to crank it. The guy at the repair shop cranked it before giving the saw to me, but when I got home and tried the same thing the rope would not come out like it should. This saw have not given me a good hour of service since owning it new. I have an old Poulan saw which have the same problem and I will try this technique on it also.

Nice tip! Worked well on my old 021, with the square logo. Got curious and tried this on my brand new 261cm (made december 2019), and it didn't work. The small tabs that go into the holes where you add lubricant snapped off, and were stuck in the holes. The logo plate seems to be redesigned. Just a warning if anyone wants to try this with a newer saw! My saw is made in Germany. I live by the saying «If it ain't broken, fix it til it breaks» 😁

I have an old Sears Chainsaw and the starter spring flew out when I took it apart. Just prior to it flying out I couldn't imagine what I was looking at. It looked like a bunch of figure 8's all intertwined. The initial symptoms was that the starter rope was extremely hard to pull and when it moved, it moved in about 2-3 inch segments. But it did retract. My guess is that one end of the spring came off and it went haywire after that. I see where both ends of the spring have to end up, but I'm not sure how to accomplish that. I'm guessing now that I'v cleaned the compartment out , I just attach the outside and wind it up until it looks like it will align with the inside (pulley) and rope then put the "c" ring back on and whalla. The spring has a blue plastic material under it on the outside hub of the starter. It also has a black semi-stiff vinyl ring that goes over the top before the pulley is slid on to the shaft. They were caked with hard grease. All clean now. Will lube spring with T-9 spray prior to assy. Any videos or suggestions?
