That’s my advice-what have you experienced heads learnt over the years?
This isn't advice, really, unless it would be to stop and appreciate what you have on your wrist right now. As a ceramist at a dental lab, I work under magnification all day, and as it relates to watches, I stand in awe at the sheer beauty of the workmanship of these little timekeepers. I have so much joy in the disassembly, and repair of some other person's masterful work. So anything I wear that I've repaired is a pleasure.
That is a great video. This information is important to watch buyers. Buy what you love and you'll never be disappointed. Talking to watch dealers is valuable to you.they will till you what they did wrong so you don't fall into their trap. Ask questions, don't buy a watch to put in your safe. Make sure to pass it down to your family. Your watch and your memory will be pasted down your line. Engrave the back cover so you live on. Neal

I started off with affordable quartz watches, graduated to Rolex and Omega, now realising that I still really like my Casio's, Seiko's and Citizen.
Saw the thumbnail and thought "never seen this guy", read the channel name "never heard of it". Clicked the video anyway and boom "omg its him!"

Fully agree re actually trying on watches before buying. I recently went to my local AD with the intention of buying the latest version of the Moonwatch, that I’d lusted after for a while. Tried it on and was surprised to find I didn’t immediately love it. On a whim I asked to try on a Reverso monoface small seconds (with the super supple Fagliano strap) and was immediately smitten. So, after much deliberation, I left the AD with…a pistachio dial Breitling Premier B09 😄
These are all 3 very good watches! Congrats on the Premier!

Your advice really resonates with me. I have a Tudor Prince-Date Chrono that was such an impulse buy. Driving home, I was yelling at myself for being so rash. And every time I see it in the box, I think to myself that it is so going to be traded in for something else. But then I wear it, and say to myself that I have to keep it, as it is such a good looking watch. Then I notice the size and it looks smaller on my wrist than I prefer. Then the blue dial calls my name, and I want to keep it forever.......AARGH the horror of watch ownership....HAHAHAHAHA

the part about being desensitized to prices is real thing i find myself thinking about how expensive lemon soda has become ($ 0.24 in my part of the word) and come back home to look at pictures of watches thousands of dollars and think oh that's cheap

I absolutely love this and especially the 'Why dont you deserve it?' portion. This is my biggest problem and its helpful to be reminded
“Why DON’T you deserve it!? Enjoy Yourself!” should be the title of this excellent video. Your take on the subject (6:05 on) is spot on. Way too many do not get to do this, which includes those that buy these wonderful watches & then keep them locked away, unworn, BNIB!
There should hopefully come a day when a watch that is 10 y.o & well cared for but worn, is more appreciated than a Box Queen. I am borrowing the phrase from boating, where the highly spec’d yacht, built to take on stormy seas to reach exotic, or even ordinary locations, is instead relegated to the marina as a platform to drink cocktails & pretend that it’s experiencing the voyage of life. A Dock Queen.
If you can afford, then buy, wear, experience, enjoy!

Agree, Its a trinket. Indeed, we are in charmed position to afford watches, so enjoy the hobby rather than take it all too seriously. E.g. 19mm lug width is not a first world problem.

Composing a seemingly self-contradicting list of d0's-and-don't is quite a daunting task, but you made it look easy. Watching your channels often causes me to consider a watch that I normally would have overlooked by highlighting, and making seriously interesting, a detail that I otherwise would not have learned. You truly have a gift.

Well, my best and most important lesson is- not to buy/own watches in alignment with what I “suppose” to have, what I “must” have as a collector, what I “think” others will “think” of my watches and my collection. I just wanna enjoy what I love, what makes me happy and satisfied, on what I can easily and practically afford. And it works great! Yet I can’t bring myself to sell even one watch- I give what I don’t really need as presents to very specific people, whom I want to introduce to the wonderful watch world.

I purchased many in a row, but have researched the first watch, and that was the watch for me, then purchased the same style in different colours for a rotation
Good advice. I bought my first luxury watch 25 years ago. An omega seamaster 300m. I’ve been lucky enough to have bought a submariner date about 10 years ago, a datejust a couple of years ago at retail and my first Tudor chrono this year & really like it. The only watch I’ve ever bought & sold was a breitling superocean. I don’t regret that.
Came close to selling the omega but very glad I kept it.

I think the part when I’m hunting for the next purchase, and this is when I do most of researching is sometimes more fun than making the purchase. Definitely, makes the journey more memorable and more worthwhile.

Nice video as always! For me, the listen to yourself is also listen to that voice in my head that i don't want to listen to. The voice that says "isn't it too big for you?" Because it is... Or "isn't it too expensive?" because again the voice is right... The voice that, when I have found a watch I love or the community tells me i should love, ruins everything because deep down knows that it is not right for me....even i hate to hear it

Great advice. As a habitual impulse buyer, I have made plenty of expensive mistakes, but I like to think of each as an invaluable lesson. There have been plenty of small victories and delightful surprises in the mix, too, like discovering the vintage watch rabbit hole or how wrong I was about how pink gold fits into my personal style. We all need to be more conscientious in this hobby and embrace the madness of collecting anachronistic jewelry.

One thing I'd suggest, if you're thinking a watch you own is boring and you need a new one, is try a change of strap.
Sounds bizarre, but a new strap can really change the look and feel of a watch and make you fall in love with it all over again. Or not, and it might be that selling the watch is what you really want. But for minimal costs, it could save you regret and thousands in the long run.
Home run. New strap = new love

Good video. IMO the biggest mistake is taking watch collecting too seriously, which usually results in overspending. If you can't comfortably afford a Submariner then don't buy one. Pinching all your pennies for two + years to get a watch means you have to be overly concerned about potential resale value, buyer's remorse, seller's remorse, etc. If you don't take it all so seriously and just spend amounts you're comfortable losing then it's nowhere near as stressful.
I’m bookmarking this for the times I need to snap out of it…. especially the “good value” watches that cost thousands.
I'm lefthanded and only interested in buying lefty models, so there isn't much for me to buy, but I've got my sights on a few watches (Rolex, Tudor, Tag, Oris, and a few more) and I'm confident I'll have only a few watches, and I'm very excited to eventually acquiring them.

Great advice for sure. I had wanted a Swiss mechanical watch for 25 plus years but instead made do with mid range quartz. In shop windows I lusted after gleaming Seamaster 300s with wavy blue dials for years. Good enough for Mr Bond, then good enough for me. Finally I tried one and it was beautiful... but too big and not me. So I tried a blue BB58 and was instantly shaken and stirred, I bought there and then, too impulsively perhaps, but months later have no regrets. It's lovely and very accurate, and has 'saved' me a couple of thousand into the bargain :)
Just stumbled on this channel by chance, what a wonderful surprise it was to recognize the voice behind one of my fav watch youtube channels! Really enjoying the educational content regarding purchasing of watches. Since the Watch Snob disappeared a few years ago, I've missed this type of well intentioned advice for the unitiated (and the confused!). What are your thoughts on collecting lots of pieces vs one or two high end ones for the same budget? That was another classic Watch Snob topic :)

On the same page with regards the research - the thrill of the chase. But nothing beats trying it on and sometimes it has to be again and again. I can think of a couple that seemed great until I tried them on and disappointed. But some time later they seemed fantastic. I think it's about where you are on the journey at times and in a way you have to be ready for them and maybe even something has to slot in between. A grand mystery and that's part of the fun of this game we play.
Good realistic advice that may occasionally cause good dilemmas as rightly pointed out by your dearest Charlotte. Bonus advice, "Wife Is Always Right".
I had dilemmas when purchasing a Rolex Milgauss white variant as I wanted the z-blue variant (Tim Masso's ultimate favourite Rolex variant by the way) even though I've tried wearing it several times and thought it wasn't bad yet wasn't as good as z-blue.
Nonetheless I went ahead with my gut to purchase and since then, I've grown to enjoy appreciating wearing it on my wrist with different straps and modified jubilee bracelet.
Recently, I've went to a number of Rolex boutiques with my sibling to inquire on a submariner model to which so happened I was wearing this Milgauss White on a matching white stitched orange tanned coloured leather strap.
It was an instant eye catcher winner by many Rolex staffs as I noticed they were fixated on my Milgauss white that one even asked if its a discontinued model. By then, I knew I've made the right purchase decision eventhough I've eventually bought a Milgauss z-blue variant too as well.

Biggest mistake would be to buy from large online watch dealers. Overpriced watches sourced from other dealers mostly without being properly checked.
Balance in life is such a simple concept, but one that almost every human being struggles with.

This resonates with me in so many ways. You are spot on with your advice…to buy or not to buy? Now or later? Too expensive or not?
I battle with these questions regularly when I affix my mind into purchasing a nice item to treat myself from time to time which isn’t too often. I’ve purchased my first luxury watch when I turned 40 which was the Omega Seamaster 300m few years ago and I absolutely love it!
Just like you, my wife was the one and still is to push me into making that purchase to treat myself when I feel at times I shouldn’t. 😊 Going to have to make a decision soon about getting my next Omega which will likely be a Speedmaster.

Going off of the spending money bit there is something I’d like to add. I think it’s a bad idea to save up money for a year or more only to buy a watch. Yes, it might be your grail watch but remember that nobody actually needs a watch and think of the things that you actually do need which also costs money. Not a mistake I’ve made but one I have kept in mind.
Great advice. I've been guilty of doing too much research, and just one negative review will send me into bouts of unreasonable doubt. Recently I managed to overcome analysis paralysis and buy a Phoibus Wave Master, despite not being 100% in love with the handset. So far, I really like it and I think it will grow on me over time.

Just discovered the channel and not only the smooth voice of watchfinder has hands but now a face I can link too! For me research is manly a way to intellectualize a big purchase that’s hard to justify otherwise haha if I try it and I love it, then it’s a go

Same thing with Tissot prx I went to buy it but when I've put it on my wrist I've changed my mind. It is still a cool watch it is just not for me
Excellent video, again. It certainly eases my mind that staying 'in my lane' with regard to affordable watches is still a fun way to enjoy horology. My budget is £500 ($600?) but I recall a time when my rent cleared out all of my monthly income and £75 was a stretch. We all move on, sideways, or occasionally downwards (I still wear my £75 Pulsar Kinetic and £26 Casio), and now looking at a £300-500 quartz Victorinox, which could probably destroy a mechanical luxury watch in a game of conkers. that went to ali express, where more luck than not there, and bought watches to verify I liked it. I am at a point,
where I am looking for special watch @ this point. I buy what I like, and with some mistakes along the way.

I believe that once one has cultivated and established a respectful, strong, and friendly relationship with a person at a dealer, nurture it like any other relationship. Even if you are not seeking a new watch, email or phone the person to relay what you are seeing in the watch industry, or just to say “hi”. The continued contact makes the dealer feel special, it shows you are serious about watches, and it can assist in you getting the watch you want when you want it, perhaps even at a discount. Thank you.

I have a whole bunch of automatic chronographs because as a low income person I couldn't really afford one so when I found a 7750 watch for 300 dollars on ebay I jumped and bought one and it's only been downhill since then. I now have over 10 watches, most of which are auto chronos i bought with credit. I love the movements more than the watches themselves sometimes and can't let go but I'm drowning in debt so I am gonna sell several of them. I wish I had just gotten myself a solid luxury watch used, rather than all these mid tier ones.
Andrew, it was because of your video on the Hamilton Railway Special that I got one as my birth year watch, which was a twofer since I also was born in Lancaster, PA, when Hamilton still was based there. It presently is sitting on a stand beside my computer happily ticking away at about +4 sec./day. Not bad for a 70 year old timepiece. Much thanks for the inspiration.

@@AndrewMorganWatches That was the genesis of the Bulova Accutron Spaceview watch. Customers were so intrigued by the saleman models that showed the unique tuning fork mechanism that Bulova decided to commercially release a "see through" version.

Good video Andrew. Jenni Elle just made a Q&A video and said that she loves the watch hobby, but it's not worth the money from what a person gets out of it.
After being a watch collector for many a year, I really don't understand why a watch such an AP Royal Oak costs so much as there's so only so much fancy and accurate that a company can do.
There’s definitely a point of diminishing returns (in more ways than one).

Like a lot of people I’ve been really intrigued by both the Submariner no date and Explorer 36. Until I finally tried them on and thought nah…. The hunt for these where over. I’ll never buy them.
I was the same with the Yachmaster. Now, after two years, I am so glad I didn’t buy it.
I think too many people buy certain watches because they are convinced (usually by hype) that's its the right purchase.
I bought a Planet ocean chrono as a bit of an impulse, its only when i got the moonwatch i knew what i should be feeling when wearing a watch and that I never loved the planet ocean, so I sold it and while an expensive mistake it was a great lesson learnt.

i owned dozens watches, none where over 300 euros, haven't even spend over 1000 euros total. I learned to appreciate cheap watches, a perfectly build watch has no charm in my opinion. I have 4 watches that i'm happy enough with to be in my collection, not counting family or childhood watches.

I've been spacing my watch purchases out by 6-12 months since I got into watches in 2020, which feels like plenty of time to research, learn, and evolve my tastes. Yet I can't help but notice I'm on pace to have more than a dozen watches in a few years, which is probably more than I can or want to handle, as I'd like to be able to wear each one at least once a week or so. I am of course hoping that I can eventually space out my purchases by 2-3+ years, but it's hard to imagine waiting so long for new acquisitions when acquiring and enjoying new watches is the best part of this "hobby", and thus far I have no desire or intention to flip anything...

I set a number at 6, so it's one in one out now.
Eventually you will come to learn and find out the number that you want in your collection and its 6 for me as well excluding a G-shock beater that I leave in my car incase I need to swap out for Gym and etc... so its one in one out for me as well.

#2 happened to me with the Tissot PRX. It looks fantastic in the pics but when I tried it on - nah, no longer for me and I totally lost interest in the watch in an instant
In my case, I didn’t even want to try it on once I saw it in the display case. It was an instant “the PRX and its variants are not for me” realization.

Great advice, one thing I have learnt is watches can look very different in real life compared to CZcams and Instagram, sounds like common sense. But I have been surprised recently that some pictures and videos don't do the watches justice.

If you're on the fence about buying an expensive watch. I suggest you take a photo of the watch and then you put it as your screen saver and then every time you turn your phone; If you get sick of seeing it every for after a month you're probably not gonna want to spend thousands of dollars on it
I always enjoyed watches from the day my grandmother gifted me my first tiny automatic watch at age 5 after she taught me to read time. I only buy a watch once I get attracted to its aesthetics and that I get satisfied with its calibre. After that tiny automatic which I wore until it’s strap desintegrated, my parents gifted me a Seiko LCD quartz with alarm, chrono, etc… bought in Singapore around mid-70ies. Then I got a 17 jewels automatic dressy Seiko for high school graduation. At 18 I bought a Cartier Santos steel & gold which I wore almost daily until it’s bracelet was worn out. The Santos travelled to the UK & Norway North Sea, US and Artic Russia above the artic circle by -55 deg C. This was returned to service 3 times but it was kept impeccable including the whole bracelet & clasp replacement. In 1983 I was gifted a Swatch which led me to buy 2 more throughout the 90ies, these colourful watches were used to go on holidays. When my Santos went to service in 2001, I went to buy my first Hamilton, a beautiful chronograph which I wore whilst working in Vietnam. I had to go diving in Caribbean and Malaysia so here came my second Hamilton which is a diver with two crowns; a beautiful watch. In 2005 I bought a beautiful IWC Spitfire Doppelchronograph then a year later came the limited Ceramic Doppelchronograph which I bought as my tool watch to travel to oil & gas sites around the world because it flies under the radar and does not scratch. I now enjoy more the watches which fly under the radar. In 2008 I could not resist the appeal and the romance of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Polaris 1968, this has travelled with me in many places including Brunei, Iraq, Yemen, Angola, South Africa and UAE whilst providing me with a pleasant alarm to wake up to. The October 2019 Omega newsletter revealed to me a watch I definitely had to have, my first titanium watch with a pleasant chocolate and salted butter caramel colours scheme; the Seamaster No Time To Die. I got it in May 2022 with both its emblematic Milanese bracelet reminiscent of the 60ies - 70ies and two of its NATO to allow cleaning. It’s a pleasure of a watch but I now realise that having too many is not ideal as one can only wear one at a time… but I never sell any of my watches as each of these is associated with memories. Oh, and I also have kept my father’s watch of the times when he was participating in experimental saturation dives as well as working on subsea wellheads… Things did not always end well, there were gas mixes and hoses connections mistakes, casualties were a regular occurrence, … To me it’s the most precious of my watches; it’s reminiscent of time past of all these heroes pioneering saturation diving…

Andrew -- i have some 'advice' that may not be useful to all, but i stumbled upon this collecting approach . . . and it had unintended consequences. For reasons too tedious to explain i am attracted to classic, fairly simple, styles. When i realized that many of my interests -- say, flieger watches or any of a half dozen early-ish diver designs -- i realized that i could 'test drive' the designs for a few hundred dollars (less when i resold them for half) in the Chinese homage market. The idea was: wear it on my wrist for six months and see if the ardor abated or was enhanced?
Yes, well, that didn't turn out so well, did it? Ownership ended up convincing myself that a Chinese homage -- particularly one tarted up with my own custom dial -- could very well serve me without the cost or, importantly, emotional overhead of an expensive watch. They can even keep COSC time!
Thus i have been cast into the outer darkness in the minds of many watch enthusiasts, but am happy nonetheless.

l am willing to wait for the watch market to cool down. My friend got me interested in buying a Rolex, l told him l don't do dive watches, but a bought an own brand diver online just to see what the fuss is about. Took some getting used too, but l can see why he likes it, the diver is now my daily. I settled on a Longines Heritage diver as l prefer a clean look, but will wait until it hits the previously owned market and becomes a little more affodable. Hopefully they will have one in Bicester Village on my next visit
The Legend Diver is a great choice 👍
The watch I really want is, not only out of my financial reach but I’d feel out of place wearing it in my social circle. I could pull it off though regardless.

So..... Do lots of research.... but also not too much. Dont buy watches too fast and enjoy the journey.... but also dont wait too long. Buy the watch you enjoy, its ok.... but also be careful with your money. Its ok to move a watch on if you dont love it any more.... but also dont sell a watch just because its no longer the latest hotness and regret it. Ask the community for opinions and a different perspective.... but also dont take other peoples opinion to heart as its your watch.

Granted, in hindsight it's not something I would recommend anyone to do when they don't even know anything about watches before that first watch; I've been exposed to watches by a friend many years ago with his Pateks and APs so in some sense that appreciation for watches lay dormant until recently. And my watches are pretty much logarithmic in value and a mix of different styles that I fancy, so I'm pretty much happy with my relatively... moderate... collection of watches.

I’ve never sold any of the watches I’ve bought, as each one represents something to me. However, I nearly got rid of one once; my Tudor Grantour Flyback. The damn thing was just too heavy and chunky. Solution? Change the bracelet to a rally strap. Bloody Nora, as if by magic, it’s one of my favourites. Collection is up to nearly 40 now, as these bloody affordable microbrands aren’t helping (but I’m loving it!). Price of a watch does not matter to me; it’s what I like, so if that’s a $600 Farer Ainsdale quartz l, then so be it! It doesn’t always have to be a tourbillion (sorry, Mario!)
