Just some FYI for folks who aren't in the know, this the 4th time SS has released this figure (sort of). You had the original Deluxe version with large light up bases and Anakin swap out head, then they released a version that was basically a stripped down version of the Deluxe with newer hand sculpts, and I believe updated cape and inner robe materials (maybe codpiece too), then they released the version you see in this video. The one in this video is a reissue of that 3rd version. The updates of this one compared to the others include newer box, newer body suit (3-piece instead of a onesie), codpiece, dome and leather elements on all the belts/straps. Based on Justin's review, sounds like they added some soft ratchets which I don't think mine has. I like this version. Their body suits last longer than HT. I got mine after deciding to replace my HT ANH version and I like it much more than that one. I gave it the HT ANH base, and HT ESB boots and he looks fantastic. The lights are also much easier to use than the HT ones and I prefer these sculpted hands over the HT ESB ones. To me, after handling both the HT ANH (1st version) and ESB versions, this one feels more solid and with the upgrades, it fits in with the HT figures. I still think the best HT Vader is the ANH one that came with Tarkin.

I’m glad I just ordered the sideshow Vader because as much as the hot toys Vaders may be better quality in some ways, I love how much taller the sideshow one is. It just fits with how I picture him a lot better.

The figure itself is excellent, it just doesn't come with as many accessories as you'd like. For example: the edition of The empire strickes back includes you even a base with lights, set in the fight with Luke. I love the figure as such but that it comes with practically only hands and the base is a bit disappointing. Very good video by the way.

The sideshow helmet and mask looks way better in my opinion than the hot toys empire version, overall i think the sideshow is pretty great, not hot toys quality, but I'd be happy with it, plus his height looks really imposing compared to the hot toys versions

Agreed. 2014 version with large base and Anakin head is still the best one IMO. Can lose him kneeling and much more with the better articulation. Light up features are also great. Color of saber also better on it just like this one as shown by Justin here.

That figure is amazingly well detailed and super accurate. I have to agree that the Hot Toys Rogue One Darth Vader is the best of all Darth Vader figures ever made.

This looks like a simple reissue of the Deluxe version Sideshow released years ago, only with far less accessories. 2.0 or not.
Funny thing is I always thought that Sideshow's helmet design was a bit off, yet in fact, it's very accurate to ROTJ. I prefer the ESB design, but Sideshow did a very solid job there, and this Vader is battling Luke in the Detolf as we speak!

    Hi Justin!
Hope you are well. Vader has been such an important character for me and what’s even more surprising is that I don’t own a 1/6 scale Vader figure.
I’m not so set on the accuracies of this figure nor does the scale make a difference to me. Vader can have slightly different looks since his suit requires maintenance as he lived in it for 20 years or so. I think that between the accessories, outfit and lights they made a decent effort to recreate the look. I agree the attached parts of the suit could have been better. Next to the Hot Toys version it is visibly taller. That width also makes a difference. Even the way the head on the Hot Toys figure sits seems different. Overall this sideshow figure isn’t bad and I’d have such a tough division deciding between which one is better.
Thanks for the video and see you at the live stream later tonight 💎😊

I have the original Sideshow Deluxe Vader with a Hot Toys ESB tunic which get's the job done for me, but the helmet proportions are off which is my main gripe. It looks like the helmet is a lot better on this "updated" figure and the body fills out the suit a lot better! I really want to get a Hot Toys Vader and Rogue One is definitely the best looking one. However, I have a feeling they'll release a new version since he's gonna be in the Kenobi series. I wanna see what that one looks like (when they get around to releasing it in like 100 years)!

I have this figure and the Hot Toys Empire 40th and I would agree with your assessment. This is a good Vader but not quite Hot Toys quality. I ended up using a little bit of glue to hide the wires on my SS Vader. That is one thing I will say I really like Hot Toys over SideShow figures. With the two SS figures that I have (RoTJ Luke and Vader) I had to do minor things to them before I displayed them on the shelf. Never had to do any minor maintenance on a Hot Toys figure right out of the box.

Looking up some photos comparing them to this Vader, imo, sideshow definitely nailed the headsculpt. That is Vader, me personally, I'd most likely pick up a Hot Toys Vader instead due to worries of durability and lasting a few years longer than the sideshow vader.

But the light feature was what got my attention. I have Hot Toys a new hope Vader. Was going to get Empire Strikes Back Vader but passed on it. Regrets now.. Ehhhh, this is the Vader on my shelf! I only own 5 1/6 scale figures, and so, 1/6th are few and far between. But, for the price compared to the Hot Toys, this is a really great figure. I really don't like the helmet on the ESB Hot Toys, I don't know why, but it just looks wrong to me. So this helmet works for me. I love the cape, I love the chunky body, and the lights. The base is boring, and it is really lacking in some accessories, but honestly, this was the obvious choice for me. Meant I could put a bit more money into the Coruscant Guard from Hot Toys, so I'm really happy! When it gets to Hot Toys making the ROTJ Vader though, maybe Hot Toys will beat him out, and I'll be jealous. But yeah, I like it. Great video, as always Justin.

This figure was the only 1/6 Star Wars figure I could find. I was nervous about getting a Sideshow. I honestly think it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the Hot Toys Vader figures. Regarding changing the hands, I've found the best way is to insert the wrist peg into the arm first, and then shove the hand onto the peg.
This is very tempting, but I'm afraid it will not look correct next to my HT Vaders given the height difference. Plus, I would be very surprised if HT doesn't do a 40th anniversary ROTJ Vader figure.

@@JustinsCollection the body suits ( none of the chest boxes etc ) are not accurate to any of the movies they resemble it somewhat ( have been a Vader nerd longer more than ten years).
The hot toys 1/6 suits are okay but they are not accurate but they do the job. The sideshow body suit looks very close because it's not as puffy. The suit needs to be wrinkled and quilted looking and the new 3.0 sideshow one is the closest to how it looks on film , and in return of the Jedi the suit was flatter and wrinkly looking ( I have pictures of the screen used suit ) the hot toys mask is closer than the sideshow but accurate it is not. The hot toys suits look better when you take off the suit and wrinkle it up manually then place it back on . I did that with mine and it looks great.

Pausing the video at @13:25, it could be my eyes, but to me the Sideshow figure looks better. Saying this also as a HT ESB Vader, the Sideshow offering not only is taller, but also has more accurate body proportions. The Hot Toys figure looks too stocky. Despite being a body builder and wearing a heavy suit, David Prowse never looked that chunky in the films - check out the stills of the "I am your father scene". Also, the Sideshow helmet/features look dead on Vader, especially the eyes, "mouth" and "cheeks".
Having now watched both yours and DeanKnight333's coverage of this piece, I definitely share Dean's opinion. This is the best 1/6 Vader I have seen. I will add this to my HT ESB Vader (I can't sell that because the base is so damn good).

The Revenge of the Sith helmet is my favorite. We NEED him!!! I only have the Star Wars one out of the original trilogy it's my favorite especially the helmet and I like the tunic over the mantle. The Star Wars Vader looks battle weary while the other 2 in the original trilogy are just 2 shinny and I don't think the costume looks as good. The Revenge of of the Sith Darth Vader is my overall FAVORITE Darth Vader. I know he's shinny but he had just been put in the suit. This Sideshow Return of the Jedi one looks pretty sweet. I actually was tempted at one point to get him but after seeing the side by side with Hot Toys I'll wait for the Revenge of the Sith Darth Vader. I'm more then happy with my Star Wars one as is. He's not perfect but I chop that up to all the gimmicks inside his body making less possible. Never liked all that gimmicky stuff like light up features and such I never use them anyways.

Do you know if the DX28 head would fit the Sideshow Return of the Jedi body? Thanks for your time!

I recently got this figure for my 18th birthday and was very impressed by it. Unfortunately, when I went to swap out the hand and pose it, the arm became really loose. I felt around it and noticed that the inside of it had disconnected so it wouldn’t let me pose it properly. Has this ever happened to you Justin? I tried to fix it but was unsuccessful. I don’t want to cut open the leather/fabrics. Fingers crossed I can get a replacement.

@@JustinsCollection it’s taken a while due to the issue occurring over the Christmas period. I’ve finally been able to package it up and ship it back over to the USA. I live in Australia so it will probably take some time due to Covid shipping delays for a replacement. It is a real shame. I’ve only just started collecting hot toys figures.

Man, you can't knock the HT saber blade like that. Light doesn't have the same effect as color. Light shining threw or actually being something is going to have a less saturated hue to it, bc white is the brightest color. Red being more muted is accurate.

I have a question, does anyone know someone who makes custom head sculpts? I'm really thinking about picking up this Sideshow Vader but I also really want an Unmasked Vader head sculpt based on Hayden Christensen's likeness.

@JustinsCollection it is a bit off-putting for me. Vader's helmet is the defining feature, and i can tell if something is a bit off. The eye lenses being angled up too much bug me

I have to say I am not happy with any of the Vader figures, Sideshow or Hot Toys. I have the very first Darth Vader from Sideshow (circa 2009) and the Hot Toys Empire 40th anniversary edition. Neither helmet sculpt is great. I don't like how the Hot Toys Vader's eyes seem sort of 'cat-like'/angular. I much prefer the face of the Vader in this video, but the profile doesn't look quite right. I was really looking forward the the HT ESB Vader based on the photos, but in hand the head sculpt is very different. Its as if the best Vader would be an amalgam of the Sideshow ROTJ and the Hot Toys ESB. Perhaps we can have a new hope that the empire will strike back this year

@@flavioescobar9165 Yeah, I think that one for the most part was solid, but depending on how nit-picky you want to get about "accuracy to screen", some people have pointed out issues with the size of the "triangle" under the chin as well as the size and placement of the chest box.
