And in just a week we're at the third and final campaign for the Tales of Valor expansion: The Falaise Pocket. Here you will take command of the 346th Infantry Division, LXXXVI Crops to defend Trun by using a mix of Wehrmacht and Panzer Elite units. This is by far the toughest of all the campaigns due to it being designed to overwhelm your forces with minimal manpower. Unlike the previous two ToV campaigns this one actually plays closer to the original game, instead of being hero focused. That being said, it still has drastic changes to make it stand out and give you a true challenge. For example: there's no support/tactic/doctrine/company command tree to use. Instead, it's various call-ins to provide support and buffs to your units that are taken from the Wehrmacht Blitzkrieg/Terror doctrines and Panzer Elite Scorched Earth/Luftwaffe tactics.
It's imperative that you efficiently micro your units here so start by having your Volksgrenadiers plants mines where I did while sending the Luftwaffe infantry further out to build the first Flak 88. Airborne squads won't deploy until AFTER you've built the first one so disregard where it wants you to build one by the church. It's going to do you absolutely no good there considering we're trying to prevent any Panzer casualties. One thing to note is that the Flak 88s only cost 1 manpower and 3 population as opposed to their usual price of 400 MP and 75 fuel. That change alone should tell you how much the devs expect them to die. Infantry squads also replenish losses and upgrade much faster to keep up with the faster paced action.
Quickly scatter your infantry to capture as many garrisons as possible. Two squads of Volksgrenadiers (equipped with the free MP40 upgrade) and a Puma armored car will be enough to hold off the Airborne so long as they support one another. Be careful where you step though because Airborne can plant mines so if you see them stop randomly it's because they're planting. Speaking of mines, you should have two squads of Pioneers by now so send them to where I did to plant landmines of your own. This will come in very handy later on. You should also have three squads of Grenadiers so be sure to equip them all with Panzerschrecks either by purchasing them or by picking them up by one of the many garrisons available to you. The Luftwaffe squad during all this should be building Flak 88s where I have in order to cover phase two of the mission. Take note that you can only build five at a time regardless if you have extra population space for them so their positions are all the more critical.
Eventually the Airborne will retreat so move all your forces to the center road where you've built the first Flak 88. It is here you must make a stand and ensure nothing gets past the defensive line if you're aiming for the medal. If any hostile unit comes near the parked tanks, not only will they attack them, but they will also call in airstrikes which is an absolute death sentence for the Panzers. If tanks take enough damage, they will begin to retreat to the Northeast corner of the map and it will count as losing one so be sure to use your Pioneers to repair any damaged ones before this happens. Expect to encounter a variety of units ranging from M3 half-tracks upgraded with quads, M10 Wolverines, M8 Greyhounds, M17 Armored Cars, Riflemen with BARs, and Rangers.
Your best chance here is to meet them head on for the best results despite how reckless that might sound. I suggest this strategy because Flak 88s have amazing range when a friendly unit can spot for them. Use the Grenadiers w/Panzerschrecks to deal with armor (prioritize the half-tracks above all else) and Volksgrenadiers w/MP40s to deal with infantry (don't forget to pop off the panzerfaust ability because they're free). At some point you should've gained a half-track from the North garrison which is vital to keeping your infantry reinforced without having to pull back to a garrison, thus keeping them in the fight longer.
After dealing with the first waves of Allied armor you should have two points to spend which should always be the Henschel Combat Air Patrol to help control the constant flow of Allied armor. These will come in clutch despite their high cost of 200 munitions per use. Second thing to take is the Firestorm incendiary strike to control clusters of infantry. You can earn up to 5 command points in this mission so spend them wisely.
At one point you should notice a lack of enemies coming in. This means they will either begin pushing to the North or South of the main road. Which order the next wave goes in is random, so prepare to adjust your units accordingly. I like to load up the half-track with three squads of Grenadiers for a quick response while the rest of your forces catch up.
While your battlegroup defends the frontline, have your Pioneers deploy mines where I did to help delay Allied armor later on. You might also be tempted to build tank traps to block vehicles from going anywhere near the objectives. Do NOT do this under any circumstance. If you build any tank barriers the game will keep spawning in M4 Sherman Crocodiles upgraded with bulldozer plows to go right through them. Stick to landmines and good micro to deal with the armor.
What you are able to build changes from mission to mission. The following available are: Volksgrenadiers, Grenadiers, Snipers, Luftwaffe squads, MG42 HMG teams, Pioneers, Pumas, Half-tracks, and Armored Cars. I don't advise building vehicles for the most part due to how weak they are going to perform and will be two-shot constantly by Wolverines. Infantry will be your bread and butter here.
I'm sure most of you have noticed from other campaigns that I like to keep my units alive and avoid needlessly wasting them, but to obtain the medal I had to use my infantry as meat shields to delay the Allied armor. The further you can keep the Allies away from your Panzers, the more likely you will earn the medal. They can't call in an airstrike on something they can't see. It is also ideal to reinforce a squad rather than replace them due to how little manpower you will actually be able to generate per minute. While you are given a decent amount at the start it is very easy to fall for buying new squads and vehicles. Don't fall for this otherwise you can easily fall into a shortage and hemorrhage your reserves.
This is probably the hardest mission to get into, especially if attempting to obtain the medal, but with good strategy and micro it can be beaten. Enjoy!

Anyone else love how the maps look all normal at the start, but by the end they're all scorched and full of craters? Really cool dynamic IMO to see it change during the fights.

One of the reasons I love the Company of Heroes series so much. You don't get that level of detail in many other RTS titles.

Agreed! If a certain spot is hit enough times it will go deeper and deeper to the point there's a noticeable dip in the terrain.

The toughest campaign of all........though not the worst. That title goes to British campaign.
This is the only time where all faction are present in the campaign. American/British vs Panzer Elite/Wehrmacht. In my experience, this is the most fraustrating mission in this entire campaign. You have to pray to your RNGesus that your Panzer did not freak out, the airborne did not drop too close the the panzer or those rocket barrage fail to destroy the spotted one.

There's the base game and two expansions. The first expansion is Opposing Fronts which added the British and Panzer Elite campaigns. Second was Tales of Valor which adds 3 mini campaigns (Tiger Ace, Causeway, Falaise Pocket) but they're so small it really just counts as one.

Hi Star Marshal. Congratulations on completing the first mission of the last campaign 100% . I have a question. Will you complete the game with the last campaign on 100% this week? You have two missions left to complete in the final campaign.

4:49, that intersection there, on my first run I built two 88's and by the time I got to "Exodus begins" I got them at expert 3, which cost me to redo the entire falaise pocket campaign since they always destroy the enemy base that spawn near that area which essentially preventing the game to trigger the tank attack

0:39: Go, Thunderbolts and Flying Fortresses!
And in the meantime, Able Company is coming down to give the hurt (as shown in the American campaign).
    Flak 88s. Perfect anti-infantry, anti-armor, AND anti-air... a deadly weapon.
That's a sizable amount of German troops being run over. What is this, Command and Conquer?
Geez, heavy casualties on both you and the enemy. This surely is a meatgrinder!
There's a good reason as to why they're not attacking in the dark...
Great. So much for protecting the Panzers... we all know where they ended up in the American campaign. Stupid High Command.

  • @brotherhoodofsteelpaladin4254

This looks really tough. I mean, I know it's going to be hard because it's on expert mode, but still... just looks like you have to be really good to even have a chance at that medal. You know?

I feel like this campaign has way too much trial and error going on and RNG as far as medals are concerned. the only time I got the medal was when the rockets hit a Tiger and not a Panzer 4.

    • @StarMarshal
      @StarMarshal  Před rokem +2

That's fair. It's very easy to lose the medal because of RNG and how limited your options are.
