For the lovely folks that say this is possible with Trackspacer and/or Fabfilter Pro-Q3: Yes, it kind of is, but you will need to add multiple instances of the plugins to have separate sidechain INPUTS like I do here on the video. Don't confuse sidechain *sources* with sidechain *inputs* they are a very, very different thing :)
That sounds about right... you can also use Soothe 2 for this, and Neutron too. I really wish Ableton would copy some of this functionality into eq8 though.
Bitwig doesn't even support multiple sidechain sources (without hacking together a cluttered mess of multiple audio receivers), let alone multiple inputs. Similarly, it doesn't support multi-out vst instruments either. I don't understand why that is because their modulator routing is arguably best in class, and is the reason I have it. If only Cubase had modulator routing like Bitwig. It'd be the perfect DAW. Well, almost perfect due to the inspiration-killing audio drop outs when adding plugins. After working in Bitwig extensively I find the audio drop outs in Cubase to be unacceptable at this point. That said, imo Cubase is perhaps the most well rounded and feature rich DAW available (a true workhorse), and Bitwig is, for me anyway, the most inspiring and creative DAW around. C'mon Steinberg - let me modulate anything by everything already!
You are more than right. There is nothing that comes close to Frequency 2. Honestly, I would get Cubase only for Frequency, if I didn’t own it already. Great video once again!
Sure but that's our only choice in Ableton as far as I know :D CPU do not like but whatever XD
Thank you, Dom, you are amazing! Tell me, what song is it? And who is the wonderful singer?
I think about 50% of my Cubase knowledge has come purely from you. Magical advice, as usual. ❤
👍🏽
Hope you are not thinking anymore and you simply got it. Honestly every DAW is awesome, they have no impact on quality of your music but you will love Cubase. Cubase is like swiss knife. Doesn't look like tool with bazilion tricks until you bring them out. You can switch between all DAWs looking for happiness like a b1tch on tinder but true gem is there in front of you xD
@@jaco1368 I love it. I’ve actually been using Cubase for many years, but Dom always comes through with something I don’t know. It’s amazing how much is in Cubase. It takes years to learn it all. Even so, Dom always unearths something we all missed. 😂
@@vkm.official happy to hear Atar,I never look for anything until I really need it but always sure Cubase will have it. Replaced LPX on my mac and is also doing as host for Ableton routed over Blackhole64ch. I don't use all channels but I like use like 8xStereo and do the mixing and tweaking in Cubase. Second thing is that Dom....Dom basically knows more about Cubase than Steinberg.
Thank you so much or the kind words my friend!
Usually, I don't make out massive differences through CZcams videos, when it comes to EQ-ing, but this is very obvious. This mixing method clearly changes the perception of the track.
It's funny because the EQ curves at 8:48 look like what the singer's lips must have done when she was singing the take
Love your vids Dom I learn so much!
This Frequency 2 EQ is so underrated! I think it has as much capabilities as Pro-Q3 in mixing while working in cubase.
It's those little changes that make the difference as well as knowing your speakers.
I could not walk away from this like that, thank you so much for this video.
Its so sweet how happy you look when the vocals have their space and sounds good. ;D Super vid. Thx! :D
Oh damn, you are gonna make me look into Cubase. Man, I could have used this sorta stuff back in 2003.
Glad I took the red pill and followed into the Cubase rabbit hole :) New dimensions are opening up. Thx for sharing Dom!
Have you tried listening to this song at 1.25x speed? I loved it !
Hey Don, thank you for opening m/s side change instead of stereo, very very thoughtful 😎
Have you ever thought about making a Cubase/Nuendo Masterclass? I would pay some money for that for sure.
Only Dom would come up with something this unique, practical, and at no extra charge for a Cubase 11+ user. Props Dom!
Once again you're the Cubase master.
I used FL Studio for years. I switched to Cubase because of Dom's videos. Amazing DAW. Thanks for all your videos. 🤜🤛
Welcome to the fam my friend!
I always had a problem understanding how the piano would sound so heavy and bassy on the intro in some songs but immediately the the bass and kick comes in it just balance without clashing 😮 so this is the trick! Thank you sir. In a case like this I would use two piano tracks one with low end and mid on intro and the other with less low and mid on the chorus😂
Frequency 2 is simply superb!
Had a Blues with two electrics, on VTS Amps Racks, raising to distortion and could not satisfy my ear having them fighting the same mids. This side-chain in Frequency 2 is a gift from Gods, and saved the day (and my ears). ❤
Greg Ondo is the Guru when it comes to getting into the guts of Cubase.
Dom and Chris are god sends for me too.
Love it 😀 👏🏾👍🏾🙏🏾
11:50 Space for the Bass! Amazing content 👍
Your intro piece is to die for
Thank you my friend! You can find the full track here : open.spotify.com/album/5JQzMpLGCaeiQremPf1vKi
@@DomSigalas thank you. This is amazing
@10:18: Space for the Bass. Could be an EDM sample ;-)
I've been working with Pro24/Cubase since 1988 and I still learn new things. Today, you just taught me to use the pre-fader function to feed the side-chain, so smart! I was struggling with that 😂 Thank you so much for your channel, Dom! Greetings from a French producer in BC. (Allez la France !!! ⚽)
Same oMg!!
Me too - Cubase since 1989!
I wasn't even born mate awesome !
(Dommage on a perdu :( )
here I was using five instances of dynamic eqs because I didn't know about multiple sidechain sources... you're saving my life and my cpu.
As soon as I saw the problem I thought of the trackspacer plugin. It is a weapon I use very often. But at the end of the video I thought . "Oh yes, it's true, 8 side chains in a single plugin can simplify life. Thank you Mr Sigalas.
Reaper is very good for doing this sort of thing. Nice video👍
I got into Cubase for two reasons. One was that my style is a little cinematic at times and Cubase is good for that. And the other reason was Dom's videos. I haven't regretted my choice of Cubase for a second and I learn something useful every time I watch this channel. It's gold dust!
❤️❤️❤️
Cubase is really the GOAT!!
Yes, in bitwig studio, there are ways to accomplish this using the audio sidechain modulator. You can have as many as your would like. One way you can do this: use them mid-side split device, put an EQ+ device in the mid chain, add as many audio sidechain modulators as you need, set the frequency ranges for the sidechain modulators, then use the modulators to each dynamically duck a frequency range on the EQ+ device. It sounds complicated, but it's not bad, and you can customize it to your heart's content. You can probably do it in the grid (the built-in modular synth and FX construction set) also. Thanks for the video! You could also maybe use a few TDR Nova devices (a free plugin).
The magic of unmasking 🪄🧞. Thanks for this video Dom!
You said This Trick Is Really Gold...... You are really Gold my brother. The excitment you bring when you demostrate and your explanations are just as much a highlight as the diffrent tool demostrations in your videos. Yes, sidechaining is an awesome tool and it's awesome how you explain it's various uses. I don't use Cubase but I am a subscriber on your channel. Cubase has come a long way.
DOM!! Thanks to you, I finally understand the benefits and the way side chaining works. Blessings to you!!
Nailed it again, and with beautiful vocals might I add
Trackspacer is nice, but this is way better :)
Quick Masterclass by Dom. Thank you !
In REAPER:
Add ReaEQ to the track you want to EQ dynamically
Drag the route button from the track that you want to prioritize to ReaEQ (literally drag and drop on the GUI)
This will create a 3/4 send
Select the band you want to move dynamically, choose the bandwidth, frequency, etc.
Click on the Gain slider of your chosen band
Then go to the "Param" button on the top right of the plugin window
Click "Parameter modulation/MIDI Link"
Double click the slider in the top to center it
Click on the "Audio control signal (sidechain)" checkbox
Track audio channel 3+4
At the bottom "Direction" to Negative
Move the min volume and max volume sliders up and down to where you want your signal to be affected, like a compressor threshold
Attack, Release and Strength for finer adjustment
Yup, actually you can modulate any plugin parameter , that's the beauty of Reaper "Parameter modulation" !
And since you can have as many channels on a track and sends to it as you want, you can do the multiple side chains with a single EQ instance.
Those vocals sound like butter. Very nice.
Might have taken me years to find that One! I've dreamed of having a tool like this !
DOM YOU ROCK BRO !!!!!!!!!!
Great. I know now that I have the functionality of Fabfilter Pro Q3 inside Cubase ! Thanks for explaining so well and pronounce so well to be understood by english people but also by non english people.
Ohh my... When you showcased that first audio and said "that is not mixed by the way, let's find the problem"... That's when I learned that I have no clue what I'm doing since I was already thinking "Ohh my, that sounds so goooood...." haha
The multi sidechain sources is dope 🔥🌋💣
You, sir, for all the right reasons, are THE engineer to follow and take advice from.
Great tip! Wasn't aware that F2 has multiple sc inputs. Thanks🙂
most of the high quality cubase videos out there have your name on it dude. You've always got great workarounds and thought processes on this stuff I really appreciate it. this one was particularly good and I think it's going to change a lot of my outcome. I come from tape back in the '60s, last century. so all through to the end of that century we had to do all this stuff manually. although the saturation and lack of tracks made it palatable. The stuff you talk about now wasn't even a dream back then. I really can't keep up with it all so I count on guys like you for a compass when I'm working on very projects where I just need that one little trick to get through to the end of this one if you know what I mean. thanks for another great video.
Well well...absolutely brilliant. It always kills me when people say in the Cubase forum 'oh there's no point in Steinberg making more plugins', and then you see Frequency 2 in action. Great video, great real world use, thanks.
Absolutely fantastic😍
I love your grin when you activate the side chain, because same
I wish I had this video about two months ago for the track I was working on at the time. It could still help me now to go back and remaster some tracks.
Pure gold. Thanks Dom!
Awesome information as always Dom! Thank you!
dude, this is AMAZING
Really amazing. 👍
Great tip Dom ! 👌
Awesome 👏
Amazing!
This is amazing dom..

Dom the Master of boom
Another amazing video Dom!
Thank you for sharing your expertise :)
Smoooooth!!! Thanks!
Thank you Dom ❤
You're are amazing as always. Thank you Dom :)
this is treasure!!! thank you Dom
Love it! Dom. You're the man...
For everyone searching for an alternative way to do the same thing : fabfilter pro-mb might be the best option.
In most DAWs you can't get multiple sidechain input to the same plug-in, so you're going to use one instance of pro-mb per sidechain inputs.
I like to use these techniques on my instruments' bus (where there's most instruments, but NOT the bass).
One first instance of pro-mb will be triggered by the vocals to attenuate competing frequencies.
A second one is triggered by the bass to make space for it in the low mids.
Exactly as in this video !
As this process can become addictive, these are several things you need to be aware of :
- attack/release times have to fit the music. Learn how to listen to these parameters, you can f*ck the whole groove of the song just trying to get clarity.
- pro-mb should work with oversampling and accurate phase modes in order to avoid aliasing or phase shifts/ringing stuff. This is more advanced but keepi in mind you're doing frequency-specific compression on a whole bus of instruments.
For recent mixes I went even deeper (modern 808-rap) :
- pro-mb on the 808's lows (
Thanks for the comment! Trackspacer is amazing for this sort of thing but you have to add multiple instances of it. I would favour Pro-Q3 instead of MB if you don’t have Cubase. You can pinpoint the frequencies that you want much better - MB is a multi and compressor which will have a broader impact on your material :)
Great explanation. Could be its own video. Love both Pro-MB and Trackspacer too
@@DomSigalas I agree that MB always work in broad bands, but this limits phase shifts, and you don't have access to release time with Q3. This is 100% achievable with Q3 tho, a matter of preference 😎 Really great video man
Split the vocal in mid & side. In mid channel side chain with your problematic channels.
why not add a list of several sidechain signals into trackspacer? At common signal levels, I typically use something like 8% or so in trackspacer. That's it's only weakness IMO, that the interface kind suggests the user to set way too much of the effect
Grate video! Thank u Dom!
Brilliant 👏
GREAT!
Super! Thank You!
Great tip well done Dom
I didn't know about this feature. Thank you so much, this can be a really time saver.
just fantastic
BRILLIANT!!!!
Thank you Dom, you rock 🙏
Fantastic Dom, we never stop learning 😉🙌🏻
Brilliant.
thankfully 😍
Great !!! I'm so excited to apply .
Thank you Tom ❤️❤️
Superb
Great tip as always, Dom! Definitely gonna play around with this!
Quality mate.
Ducking avoiding frequencies clashings...
...this is dynamic EQ was made for. And many are never using it...
COOL!!
THANK YOU!!!
It is insane and amazing!! Thank you so much Dom!
AWESOME-BRILIANT DOM!!!
Going to try this😍🤩🤩
This is brilliant!!
Dom is always kicking top tips. I'm mesmerized with this one. Thank you!
Dom, this is exactly what I needed in my mix. Thank you very much!
Absolutely fantastic video again - as always!!! 👍👍👍 Thank you so much for all the work you are putting in these videos, dear Dom!
What a brilliant and agile way of explaining and showcasing. Thank you!
Thanks dom......👍💪😃
They should add the comparison view to the Frequency 2 plugin as well.
This is absolutely brilliant... I LOVE your videos !!! You're always completely on point !! Thank you sir
You are absolutely right, it makes such a difference, thanks for your enthusiasm and love of music :)
Thanks man great video
This is purely gold!
