    I didn't expect it but this scene gave me chills the first time I saw it. It's strange that as a Mexican-American such a British film felt so relatable, but in the end it's a human story.

    What the caption doesn't say is how the miners suffered terrible lung deseases and other grave health problems from working down the pit.

      @@loganjohnson8010 I was actually saying that the negative effects of the jobs they did is never taken into account, which I thought was clear. Some would argue that the health of the miners is more important than economic prosperity but that's a judgment call you'll have to make for yourself.

      Yes it’s true, and so is the fact that they were all thrown out onto their arses systematically without anything.
      Coal is obviously harmful for the environment, too, but that didn’t matter to the Thatcher Government. What mattered was the financial side. Any sane government would have sought to replace the jobs lost or to help people retrain. All that was offered was the dole. They were thrown out, left for dead, as far as the government was concerned.

      My grand dad died as a victim of lung cancer to those mines. He worked in the grimethorpe colliery.

    I am a conservative American and I always admired M. Thacher. But "Brassed off" with Pete deeply touched me. We will live pursuing happiness. Let's just do our best.

    They filmed a couple of scenes in my home town. One was the civic theatre and the Piece Hall in Halifax.

      You're why the left always lose. Doing a press conference in front of a flag, playing Land of Hope and Glory at the proms and such stuff is a small price to pay to win an election and make real change.

      Nonsense. The rest of you can always hope for a miracle. "Land of Hope". Well from a different perspective when the UK joined the common market it drove Australian jobs down the toilet. When Thatcher came to power she bought Australian coal and sold British jobs down the toilet. What goes around comes around

      @@theascensialbluesband9984 The problem isn't that it happened, it is the way the Tories did it. It wasn't economics, it was revenge.
      The useless Tory government also destroyed many viable and good companies with their piss poor management of the economy.
      The Tory Party is dominated by incompetents who got to their place not on merit, they got there because of their rich mummy and daddies. That shows when they are in government, they are completely out of their depth.

    A very good film, well-directed, fantastic cast, believable storyline.
    A little bit politically skewed: the Labour administration before 1979 closed more pits than the Conservative one after, but that's an inconvenient truth. That doesn't detract from the film, which is a work of fiction.

      The difference was the Tories didn't do it for economic reasons, they did it for revenge. We were still using coal in power generation, the Tories simply decided to import it.

      Everyone of labour's pit closures was via a negotiated procedure. Not one was intended to trigger a war with mining communities and the unions. What Labour did economically and agreeably cannot be compared to what Thatcher did to further her class war ambitions.

    Labour may, which I find hard to believe, closed more pits than the Tories. However, they never set out to destroy towns and cities economies, just to spite the working classes and teach them a lesson for usurping power. Thatcher despised working class people and would do anything to cripple them.
    A bit political the film ! How on earth could you do a movie of a northern brass band, that never involved they continuing struggle to keep their heads above water.

      you need to remember that not all the mining communities in the country were borderline communist. I myself are part of a Colliery Band in County Durham and our Pit Banner doesn't show the signs of anything Communist. There are a few Banners that I have seen that show Karl Marx, Lennon and that lot but not all.
